Whatever it is, I hope they make it so that when you pop out the kickstand the phone will rest on the side with the volume buttons. It would make more sense to me to have the charging port available than the volume & camera buttons.

Actually, it would make the most sense to me to have the charging port on the bottom so you can rest the phone on the side with no inputs, but that would make too much sense...

I can also see Sprint and HTC marketing a cradle for this bad boy.

Probably another reason they put the charging port on the side.

This has to be the reason. I really can't imagine why they would put the charging port on the side unless they were planning on releasing some dock that had a connection right there.

I still wish the port was on the bottom.

My main hangups on this phone are no kickstand and charging port on the side.

Clear says they got mind blowing results for LTE trials.

I wonder why LTE wasn't officially announced as part of EVO 3d (if it actually exists).

If it's not there i would hope sprint lets people upgrade at the discounted rate once LTE replaces wimax.
They also said they aren't looking at wimax 2 which is great news.

I do see a couple problems with this. If they completely can wimax, why should we have to even pay to use the "new" 4G? After all, we paid for a 4G phone and are having that connectivity stripped from us. If they do go with LTE, they will likely leave their current Wimax running and then just add to their 4G with LTE. This way, people are still getting the 4G map they signed on for and there can be no potential lawsuite.

To be honest there are ahandful of HTC handsets that have the charging port on the left side. I am sure they make docks for them, but none, outside of the Thunderbolt, has been pushed as a real feature at all, at least not to my knowledge.

But why would people choose wimax over LTE if the price is the same?

I'm not seeing the benefit of dual wimax/lte radios when LTE is obviously superior.

Or they could swap out our phones with a comparable LTE phone and shut Wimax off a week later.

This is what they are already planning to do to iDEN customers, so it's not out of the question that they would do it to Wimax customers too.

You sound like a really smart guy, tell us, why is LTE obviously superior to Wimax, or even Wimax 2? Inquiring minds need to know.

Thx

Laying on a table in front of me right now is a Sprint PPC 6600, PPC 6700, Mogul, AT&T Tilt, AT&T Fuze, AT&T Tilt 2, Sprint Touch Pro 2, and my Evo. All of those are made by HTC and every single one of them has the charging port on the bottom. That takes us from about 2004 to 2010.

This charging port on the side is a new development for HTC. There has to be some logic behind it, and the only reason I can think of is there is some dock they are going to release like Motorola.

It's not about choice. It's about Sprint covering their butts. Currently, if you have a 4G phone with Sprint it's WiMax. If they drop wimax alltogether for LTE, they would be required to either allow you to terminate the contract or give you a device/upgrade that uses this new radio since you signed a contract with 4G data. Rather than do that, they would be more likely to keep what current wimax infrastructure they have for a while. This way, people can COMPLAIN that they want an LTE phone, but Spring wouldn't be required to give them one. Every contract Sprint currently has is honored wether or not they add a single more city to their current 4G wimax map being that you signed the contract knowing what the 4g coverage was at the time of signing.

Droid Incredible, Thunderbolt, EVO Shift, G2, and now the EVO 3D are a few that I can think of that have the side chart port. I didn't say this was a majority, just that it is far from first.

I doubt it. Even if they hand out new phones to iDEN customers, you've got to understand that 1) there are probably less iDEN customers than 4G phone owners (complete guess on my part) and 2) any iDEN phones that need replacing probably cost MUCH less to replace than any of the 4G phones.

Unfortunately, I think in the long run they'll slowly devote more & more of their 4G bandwidth to LTE & Wimax users will suffer for it until they slowly begin to upgrade to LTE phones. I don't think there's any way they'll swap phones or anything.

I think they're done deploying new Wimax sites though. Any new tower they add will probably be saved for when they're ready to turn on LTE. That way the customers in in non-Wimax areas can't complain that they took away something that they had. It's a bad situation for the current Wimax adopters.

Well aside from the Droid Incredible, the rest of those devices were all released with the last couple months.

It's likely that you guys are correct, based on where the charging port is for the Atrix:

and where it sits on the dock:

Thing is, the Atrix has the hdmi and micro-usb ports separated. I'm not an expert on wiring, but I'd imagine that HTC'd have to figure out a way to route the wiring appropriately for separating the HDMI and USB connections?

This wouldn't be hard at all. I am sure there are cable for hdmi, usb, and power all wrapped neatly in one casing.

Yeah i understand the legality off it but eventually they're going to have to drop wimax for LTE. I just don't see why they have to delay it. Surely offering a discounted LTE replacement is cheaper than maintaining the wimax network.

But i guess we'll see what Clear/Sprint ends up doing. If they can give us 60-80mbps while driving 50mph i wouldn't mind paying full price for a new phone.

Certainly true, however the G2 is getting long in the tooth as well. Point is, they don't all have docks that they were pushing to sell. FWIW I know I have seen more HTC Android devices with side charging ports that they didn't really sell as a "look how neat this dock is" product. I think it's safe to say that they don't specifically put a side chargin port on all of their devices JUST for the sake of adding a dock. I thought about actually looking up pictures, but I'm thinking it's not worth my time. Frankly I would be more inclined to say they ran out of room on at least some of these devices and figured the side was as good a slot as any. Look at the EVO3D. I am not sure they could fit a charging port on the bottom if they tried (without making the battery smaller).

Well supposedly they will be selling a dongle that splits them into 2 seperate connections (HDMI and USB). But in addition to that, the port on the Evo 3D is supposedly a MHL port which supposedly charges the device even while you are connected to a device through HDMI.

It seems cut and dry for you are me to say "hey, LTE is better, let's go for it". But there are many considerations, not the least of which is millions of dollars in equipment, licensing, etc. Then of course there is the public viewpoint. While the scenario I gave would keep things on Sprint's end legal, I think a whole lot of their customers would be peeved to be stuck in a two year contract on Sprint's "crappy" 4G while their new adopters are all enjoying the LTE network.

Maybe they could work out some deal with HTC/Samsung/whoever where Sprint sends them the phones and they swap the chip on the circuit board, converting it form Wimax to LTE. I imagine Sprint could get that done for like $50 per phone (or less). So they send all their refurbs they have in stock in to get changed, giving them a pool to swap out. And customers come in and trade their phone for one of the refurbs of the same model. The customer is on their way in a matter of minutes. Sprint then sends that phone in to get the chip changed and and refurbed, then puts it in the refurb stock when it comes back.

People bought a phone brand, spanking new, Sprint decides to change their 4G networking, and everyone is then forced to take a used phone with the upgraded chips, all because of Sprints bad foresite. I just don't think this would fly for everyone, and public image is everything.

Also, aren't we looking at a couple million EVOs sold so far? I know it has hit at least 1 million, and I think that is lowballing it. Thats $50 million right there in EVOs alone. This doesn't count their other 4G devices (including USB modems, hotspots, etc.) Major cash, as I said above.
