Help Evo 3D Software Update Coming August 23rd (rolling out now)

I am really liking Swype with this new update. I have been using the stock keyboard since day one. I like HTC's Trace, but this Swype seems to be really good now.

Question, if I used My Backup Pro to backup applications and data settings on the phone, the do the update, factory reset the phone and then reinstall My Backup Pro and then perform a restore, won't I have a problem because I will be restoring the Data settings for the older OS version?

Remember!

This is a major update.

Typical major updates in Android will often leave cache areas stale, dirty, and tangled.

This can inhibit proper operation of update features -- and can even lead to the appearance of old things that were working to be broken now.

For best results, save as much as possible (consider MyBackup Pro, for example), and perform a factory data reset.

If in doubt, ok to wait - but at the first sign of issues, best to give that a go.

Since July 2010, I have never updated without doing a factory data reset.

Others on the forum will attest that this is the way to go.

Not an HTC issue, not a Sprint issue - an Android-wide issue.

~~~~~
At the heart of Android is a thing called the Dalvik Virtual Machine. It's what your apps run under. And it has its own cache. And updates tend to never clear that out.
That's the main issue.
Rooters know to always clear this on rom updates. ;)
Factory data reset is your way to get it done properly if not rooted.
put my phone down at noon it was fully charged it's now 5 30. 10 percent battery left wtf?
I don't want to change the workings of this thread but I can give you my 2 cents on the occasional battery issue like yours. Sometimes I'll notice that my phone is really hot (even the otterbox case is warm). Everytime it does this I also notice the battery is draining like crazy. Then I also notice that the 3G arrows are both lit up and stay that way. My simple solution has been to pull the battery and let the phone cool for a couple of minutes (2-3). Put the battery back in and problem solved. Not saying this is what happened to yours but maybe. I have never had any issues when I do this. My hypothosis is that the 3G radio gets stuck in a loop or such and it starts overworking the cpu and radio, making heat and draining battery. My 3vo was doing it last night in a store. Did exactly what I have said above and whatever was causing the issue was resloved. Hope this helps.
if you save your current profile, do the update, then factory reset, then re-load your old profile, you will be installing your old profile and potentially old hooks and "tangles" (early's word :D) and you would not have a clean install.
in this case, if you do decide to do a factory reset as EM mentions, you will have to do a manual install of settings/other items that will not be saved in Google's cloud. your apps and contacts/PIM info will be re-installed as well as your wifi settings and such. you may have some 3rd party (unknown apps you may have installed) apps not auto download. you can go to the market on your computer and re-initiate them or use , say , appbrain. many options.
im not roooted but i will root my phone eventually, and I still want to install this update, is it ok to do it?
no need to go through the setup wizard to disable Tell HTC. its avail in the "About Phone" section.
its there in plain site.. some times that's difficult to see. :)
:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: Whiskey Tango Foxtrot??? :mad:
I updated with the stock ROM from XDA, updated the radio/pri and rpm, verified that I'm looking at Android 2.3.4, but that option isn't there under "About Phone" for me. Still looks exactly as it did on 2.3.3. Anyone else have this?
If you're ok with using HTC's unlock (and the additional baggage of them being ambiguous about what warranty you're giving up), then yes, take it by all means. If you're thinking of doing it the community way with Revolutionary, I would VERY MUCH ADVISE AGAINST IT. It's possible that another hole may be found, but who knows when.
Edit: On second thought, I'm still not sure I'd take it. The people who have taken it are having an exceedingly hard time (not sure anyone's succeeded yet) in loading a custom recovery and superuser, so while the "bootloader is unlocked", it's of very little use to them, and they're unable to root. At least that's what's going on in a thread or two in the "All Things Root" section. Try here: http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all...-unlock-wont-s-off-accept-recovery-image.html
Woohoo! I didn't know it was out until I came on this forum tonight. Love being a member here!!!!:D:D
Updating now...
Update: Everything is good! Screen capture will help for future trouble shooting as well.
are you rooted? is this the reason you did this? if you just used the FOTA then you would have this. i posted screen shots. perhaps the XDA rom removed it?
I took the odexed ROM from xHausx's thread, flashed it from recovery, then took the individual Radio/PRI zip and rpm zip and installed those from the bootloader. Yes, still rooted, HBOOT at 1.4 still.
-rereading your comment, I think I misinterpreted. Yes, I did it because I'm rooted, instead of just taking the OTA and losing it.
Possible the XDA Rom removed it, but I thought it was completely stock. Still looks like the attached pics.
As a follow up, something else was screwed up here too, because it wasn't mounting the SD card correctly, saying it may be damaged and I may need to reformat. When I'd try to check the available space in settings, it didn't have any numbers, just said something about "Service started for:" for both internal and SD memory.
NANDroided back to working 2.3.3 from right before when I attempted the update. Going to re-check the MD5 of the file on the card, and try again.
Does anyone know how to get the dictionary to stop popping up after every word is typed?
If you want to add the word to your dictionary, type it out one letter at a time (not swiping), then hit the space bar after, and it adds it to your dictionary. it shouldn't ask you anymore if you want to add it.
I don't see any settings specifically for the prompt, but there is a setting for speed vs accuracy, perhaps adjusting this will help?
Check SD card on computer if you have adapter or Micro SD card reader. Usually a good indication if phone issue or actual SD card. I know it is hard to believe you do an update and SD card has issue, but I have seen it before. Thought it was software when turned out to be hardware. Not saying software couldn't have caused issues with hardware.
Still loving update peeps. SO GLAD I moved over from big red.
I noticed the new Swype right away, and its great! A few main things that I like way better about new Swype:
- Text message box used to be directly above the keyboard, with no space in between. Reaching for the top row of keys and sometimes you would click in the text box, which would get rid of the keyboard. This was a HUGE pain. New version has a space between the top row of keys and the text box.
- In this blank space, when typing in the old version it used to pop up a list of words you could select from, and the list was vertical. Not as effiecient. In the new version, these words appear in this blank space above the top row of keys, and goes horizontally. WAY more efficient now.
Overall I really like the new Swype, much better then the old version. The screen shot thing is pretty cool too!
Any word on when this will be coming to Rogers (which is GSM)? The fix for the half-locked state is EXACTLY what I've been waiting for! I've done a manual check for updates and nothing has shown up yet.
Is it just me or do home screen app icons look clearer after update? I remember when i first got the phone they all looked fuzzy. They werent high deff enough for the screen, but now most look clear as day, not sure if apps updated them and i didnt pay attention, or if this had to do with update. Someone who hasnt updated yet should take a look at them before and after :)
