Root Evo 4G 2.2 Rooted update?'s

Ok I haven't been real active on the forums for a while ( Once I get something working th way I want I kinda stop tinkering ).

Stock 2.2 Rooted

Baseband - 2.15.00.0808
Kernel- 2.6.32-17
Build - 3.70.651.1

The phone has started glitching a bit and its been on this setup for a long while ( over I year I think ). So I wanted to update to the current OTA ( NO idea whats even current )

I see there are issues because of custom recoveries, and I have RA not real sure which version.

So I am not apposed to using a modified rom, I LIKE sense for the most part and have in the past used CM, Fresh etc and tended to go back.

So the questions I have are :

Whats the current OTA ?
Whats the current most popular Sense rom?
What the most current RA recovery ?

Going to the newest OTA wil I loose anything ? I like the hboot and the boot options I currently have.

From what I have read it looks like the OTA update would need to return the phone to unrooted with the pcimg36.zip file then do the OTA, then reroot and reinstall RA.

Obliviously I wouldn't need to go that route with an modified rom.

So any help or advice you can pass along would be great appreciated.

Thanks

-Robert

Looks like the newest OTA is Security OTA 4.67.651.3 at least as far as our Roms and Kernels dl sticky, http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html

if you unroot to take an ota, the process for re rooting is a lot more complicated than it was before. All of the good of the ota's is cooked into the latest roms, which are listed at the above link, as well.

There are so so many good aosp and sense roms out there I could not begin to advise you as to which is the best, it really is a matter of taste. I have been using MikG 3.11 as my daily for a long time but recently have been trying the CM9 Port from Team Dirt. It is amazing!

Amon ra 2.3 is still the latest true AR recovery, but there are various and sundry AR STYLE recoveries, I am on 3.08. I think 3.11 is the latest but I downgraded from it. there is a thread in here of another ar style recovery by a Smelkus individual, got some good reviews. I can't say myself though. I would stay away from TWRP though, bricked some phones.

You know there are plenty of folk here who will answer you, any questions, just holler! :)

like dusty said NEVER accept an OTA while you are rooted. most ota's will close the previous exploit used to gain root access making it harder to root your phone. the current 4.67 ota will lock your bootloader and you will need to unlock it in order for you to get it fully rooted. so DO NOT ACCEPT THE OTA. all you will need to do is flash a rom that has the current ota built in and you are good to go.

i would recommend that you start out with mikg3.11 it is waaaaay better then stock. but that will be up to you. and it is hard to recommend a rom as that is all a matter of opinion and taste.

just make a nandroid backup and give them all a go!

LOL, I was just reading the DIRT rom thread, it looks interesting, but my issue with the CM stuff was too much was stripped out of it ( at least CM7 )

I am looking at radios, how do you find what versions of the radios s/w is currently running ?

Thanks!

I agree with both replies. Even if you just want stock latest wipe and install the stock rom in the kernel and rom sticky. Dont take the ota or unroot just flash and you are good to go.

menu/settings/ about phone I think it is under baseband version.

and that cm9 is NOT stripped down!

That would be your baseband.

yea 2.15.00.0808 ok, like everything else way old :)

Just wondering whats the gain on the newer Hboots ? I am at 2.10 atm

I am reading up on the MikG rom right now ( slow day at work for a change )

also snagged the newest RA and the newer radio package ( thought 4g has never worked worth a flying F for me and I am like 3 miles from Sprint World HQ )

Thanks for the help guys, still reading up.....

For sense your going to want either Mikhail, Tommy's classic evo, or SOS.

I prefer the 4.54 builds right now rather than 4.67 just because that's what we have kernel code to work with

Don't know for sure there is any benefit to newer radios, your mileage may vary, as they say.

you do know that you can brick your phone if you pull the battery whilst flashing a radio though, right? Make sure you do not do that. We had a poster who just had the phone lying there with the back cover off and the battery fell out when he was flashing them too, same result. So, DO NOT pull the battery when flashing radios. and make sure you have a well charged battery before you start, as well! :)

It can be a bit difficult to tell when they are through flashing. Seems to leave some of the text from the process on the screen so you think it is doing it forever with one version, anyway.

Ask before making any costly mistakes!

here is the latest radios:
PC36IMG_Radio_2.15.00.12.19

just rename the file to PC36IMG and move it to the root of your sd card (no folders) and let the bootloader update it for you.

also please read this:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...before-you-flash-your-radios-read-thread.html

there is a very small chance that you could loose your wimax keys when flashing radios so make sure that you do a nandroid backup and backup your wimax keys.

also like dusty said make sure that the battery is full and DO NOT PULL OUT THE BATTERY that is a sure way to brick your phone.

Thanks, snagged that a bit earlier today when I was poking around.

I have flashed radios before ( I did an update that really didnt work well and had to back flash)

I have had such crap issues with WiMAX we thought that when I rooted the phone it may have gotten killed but the app that can check that said I had keys so....

Quick question - I don't recall the difference between ODEX and DEODEX when referring to some of the ROMs - Been so long brain is fuzzy :/

here is great explanation of the differences between the two:
What Is Odex And Deodex In Android [Complete Guide]

but in short odexed is packaged differently that makes it smaller. but in doing so, it is harder to theme. de-odexed, is much larger but it is much easier to theme and modify or flash mods.

Welp got my recovery updated, radios are done and last night flashed MikG's been working on getting settings right and apps reinstalled.

Something I was wondering about.

On the Google App Store (web) is there a way to remove apps from the installed list?

also it seems that they don't have a good way to discern the install between devices, as I have 2 phones and a tablet.

Thanks, I am sure I will have a few more questions as I get further into this rom.
