Root EVO 4g 2.3.5 rooting help

solrac916

Newbie
I updated my phone a couple of days ago ( i know, bad choice, like many other rooted phone users did) but anyways what i have on my phone shows right now that it has is:

Revolutionary
Supersonic evt2-3 ship S-OFF
HBOOT 6.16. 1002
Radio-2.15.00.12.19

...I started looking around the web for instructions on how to root the evo once again, I went to HTCdev.com and followed the instructions on unlocking the Bootloader but i get stuck on step 8 where it states:

Type in Command Prompt: fastboot oem get_identifier_token

after I type this the only thing is the command prompt is:

< waiting for device >

and it just stays there.

Im stuck in this step, can anyone help me out pls? I would really appreciate the help. Thanks in advance :D

You may get more help here: EVO 4G - All Things Root - Android Forums

I'll ask the mods / guides to move this thread.

BTW, Welcome to Android Forums :)

The info you typed there says you are already rooted. That would be why it hangs. What are you trying to do that you feel you need to reroot

well i use to be running software 2.3.3, but last week i got received a notice on my evo saying there was a software update available to 2.3.5

after i updated the software all the apps that i had on my phone that were only able to work if rooted do not work any more.

i want my phone rooted mainly for the Tethering

Ok thats strange do you still have the super user app in the app drawer?
You may need to redownload it and install it. It sounds like the update messed some things up.
Also ypu may need to reinstall your recovery. I would check and see if you still can get into recovery.

yes i have superuser v2.3.6.3 but when i try and use an app that requires a rooted phone it asks me "Is your phone rooted?"

I would update superuser The newest is 3.0.7 in the market also try wipeing cashe and dalvik cashe in recovery.

ok i need help with that...how can i get into my recovery or how do i reinstall it if needed?
Ok to get to recovery power phone off then hold power and volume down untill u see the hboot screen. Like you did for the info in the first post.
You should see the option for recovery under what you posted. select recovery and it will either give you more options or you will get a triangle with a ! if yoiu lost recovery. To update the super user just go to the market and download.

so if my phone shows Revolutionary, that means my phone is still rooted? how do i wipe cashe and dalvik cashe from recovery

ok i tried the recovery, and i am able to go into recovery
i also updated my superuser to Superuser v.3.0.7

but still no luck running root access apps, is there something else
i might be missing or need?

If you have amra recovery follow whats in my last post select recovery then select wipe. Then only wipe the dalvik cashe and the cashe not sd or anything else or you will loose stuff the rom needs. If you are on clockwork mod recovery only 1 of the cashes are under wipe and the other one is under advanced or something like that I dont use cwm so nat 100% shure.

If you open the super user app it should tell you what apps have asked for permission and if they were denied. If the apps were denied you might have to change it to alow superuser for the app. This is from memory on reading other post so i have not had this problem. Hopefully someone else will pop in here and help.

alright thanks for your help, i wiped the dalvik cashe and the cashe but still no luck, hopefully someone comes in here and helps me out

I was hopeing some one else would give u some more ideas. I think the ota may have particaly unrooted the stock rom. The only other thing I can think of is to flash a new rom or flash the stock updated rooted rom.

not for sure but sounds like you may have had a data wipe. never known an ota to do that but best result IMO is to flash a new ROM or Revert to the Nandroid you made before you updated.

In cases like this is generally easier to start over. As long as you have your stuff backed up with Titanium. I would either install a new ROM or I would Wipe Cache / Dalvic and data. and start fresh. Maybe then try to run titanium and just do a redo of all user apps and data

IMO rooting a phone just for tethering is like buying a mustang just for the horse emblem.

:D:D:D:D:D that is a LMAO analogy. i like it.

but yeah i agree. you should try mikg3.0 it is way better then stock and will have all the features you are looking fo.

so please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html. there is a flashing section that will give you the step by step instructions. also you might want to first switch recoveries to amon ra2.3. in the guide there is also instructions for that.

flashing mikg3.0 should fix your issues.

Open the superuser app and delete all the apps that are listed, then try opening those apps again and see if it re-promps you to allow root access.

I did delete all the apps showing on the superuser but still no luck, when i try to open up a root access app it asks if my phone is rooted? and the superuser app doesn't say anything when I open it, it opens up fine, lol no I don't want it just for tethering, I mean I'm new to this rooting scene, I had the phone rooted for about 4 weeks and then last week I made the mistake of updating the firmware, either way I was just learning about different roms so i never got to flash a new ROM, it was always running on stock ROM and one of the few apps that I got was the tethering, but now that I'm stuck can u guys help me out with flashing a new ROM

If you took the OTA, then you would've lost root access. You need to flash the su binary from here in your custom recovery, and then the superuser app should be able to get root.

I think here might be a good place just to make the comment that S-OFF does NOT mean you are rooted, nor does S-ON mean that you're not. Root access simply means that you have access to the root of the filesystem, meaning you can change (read-write) system files. It is the su binary that gives you the ability to do that in Android, and the Superuser app gives you an easy GUI to grant apps root access.

Yes I took the OTA, and I have recovery RA-supersonic 2.3
So that su binary file that I need to download, what exactly do i do with it
It how exactly do I install it

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!! so i just flashed the new su binary file and now its back to normal, running all the flashed apps once again, so now that i have my phone rooted once again I want to do more with it, im running stock ROM, so can anyone help me out with updating it with a better ROM, or Kernels? or what about radios, i always see people talking about them in different forums, but im not sure what they are, can anyone explain real quick all this for me, thanks again though guys i thought i was gonna be stuck with my regular evo, but now once again it is rooted :D
