Root Evo 4g rooting newbie, please help

ShaneDS

Lurker
Hello everyone, I've had my Evo for about a year now and I just starting looking into rooting it. Now i have roughly no knowledge of how to do so.

Before i begin.. I need to be able to back up my contacts and apps. Those are the main priorities.
I have a Mac that I'd like to do the rooting on because the Mac is mine, but i can use a PC if needed. (opinions on which is easier/preferred please)
I have a 2.3.5.

So once i figure out which computer to do the rooting on and backup my contacts and apps, can anyone give me step by step directions, or point me to a site that has them. From the beginning to end?

Thank you so much in advance.

Welcome to the forums!!!
The rooting guide for android 2.3.5 is here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/488901-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

Unfortunately it is much more complicated to do now than if you tried to do this a year ago when you got the phone.

If you want to use a mac you'll need to install linux on it in a vitrual machine first

In what ways will it be more complicated? As i said im not very experienced in this type of stuff, but im a fairly smart person. And is using a Mac gonna add to the complication?

Well it used to be that you just hooked your phone up to the computer and ran a simple program and the phone would be rooted. But HTC patched that vulnerability and there isnt a program that does it all for you anymore.

You can either use the root tool HTC provided called HTc dev or you can use tacoroot to downgrade your bootloader and use one of the prior methods to root.

Using a mac will probably complicate things because youll have to install linux on it and use that instead. I would try to get your hands on a PC for a day or so

Gotcha. I will go the PC route then. So the tut you sent me.. does that tell me where to find all these things i need to download and everything?

Thank you so much for your help

Edit: I actually decided to go the linux route. How do i go about doing that?

I recommend the pc route. All the apps in the link require Windows. (exe) with Linux you will have to gather the tools through the repository and I'm not sure that the htcdev tool will run on Linux with out installing wine and even then there are no garantee it will work then
