Help Evo Rebooting on its own

Backup your data/apps and do a reset. It's worked for everyone I've seen try it on these boards and on Android Central.

Best way to "back up" your apps is to install app brain. Then get on the app brain site, create a new list and name it something like "backup" and copy your apps to that list, because once you do a reset, the "what's on you phone" list will be empty. Once reset, you can copy the apps back to the "what's on your phone list" and reinstall. Sounds harder than it is.

If you use gmail's contacts, that'll resync those, but you may have to manually back up the contacts that are local to the phone.

The only thing you can do is to hard reset the phone. People are reporting the reboot problem while using app killing programs. But not everyone that uses app killers has the problem. Give a hard reset (factory reset) a try. Backup what you don't want to lose to your SD card.

Mine did this ONCE the other weekend. I don't have an app killer installed.

Crossing my fingers that it was just a one time thing for me. I don't want to have to go through the hard reset.

i've been participating all of the random reboot threads out there. i checked my mobile data box (which was unchecked to conserve battery) and the rebooting has stopped.

i did not do any sort of reset. since i'm a believer in the path of least resistance i suggest that everyone having this problem go back in and check the mobile data box and see if that fixes things before going through a hard reset.

Does your phone now run much warmer to the touch, and drain the battery much quicker?

This POS of phone has rebooted on me 14 times today, where the **** is the quality in the product HTC? No, I dont have ATK either, I check and uncheck my FB and did every ****in thing I could and it wont stop rebooting!

Did you do a factory reset.

^^ I have done a factory reset...fix worked GREAT for 3-4 days...then all hell broke loose..before reset I was getting TERRIBLE battery life and reseting like 6 times a day...after doing hard reset I was getting AMAZING battery life and not resetting at all, until today...reset 8 times...this blows

i'm not noticing the battery life to be much different than it was before. in general the battery life is pretty crappy. i notice that it's running warmer on the charge but unusually warm off the charger.

Might want to first try re-formatting the SD card, then doing the hard reset. Backup anything you want from the SD first (pictures, music, videos, etc). Just copy them to your PC before the re-format, then copy them back after.

If this doesn't fix the problem, it would seem to clearly be a hardware issue with the phone itself, and you should bring it back and exchange for a new one.

I have two phones, one with and one without the issue. Going on a 24 hours now with no issue after reformat and hard reset. If it resets again, it will be going back.

For those seeing markedly worse battery life with always on data: do you have a facebook sync account? Check whether the .acore application shows up in the battery use and take a look at the data consumption. Is it pulling huge amounts constantly?

Do you have data always on checked?

BTW the facebook "fix" is to completely DELETE your sync profile and re-create it. I'm actually starting to think this isn't even permanent, you might have to shut off facebook syncing completely.

I've been having the same problems and trying everything on this thread. Yesterday, facebook came out with an update. After reinstalling facebook, and not yet messing with entering my facebook login info, I haven't had a single restart yet. It might just be a coincidence, or facebook might have fixed it.

Hey I'm back. Mine has stopped rebooting. I uninstalled Advanced task killer and Gameoid (GBA emulator) and i been alright ever since. When i reinstalled it (meaning Gameoid) my EVO stated resetting again so maybe they emulators are making the EVO reset. I currently have SNESoid installed and its not resetting. That the only one that i know that works. So if you have them two installed uninstall them and you should be alright (as well as any other emulator)

Also start uninstalling non stock apps one by one and see if you phone stop restarting because I'm sure that other apps are causing the same issue.

my EVO has started rapid fire rebooting yesterday from what I can tell. Not sure what is happening to it. I took some shots of my SystemPanel monitoring and you can see the cuts in power throughout my day. Have not noticed any of these reboots myself, must have happened in my pocket. Also I noticed the rebooting happening when I plug my phone into my computer. Only sometimes though, and sometimes it will reboot 2 times in a row very quickly. This is not a cool problem. I can deal with everything else, but when my phone is rebooting when it wants, I got a real problem.

BTW i am running Fresh 0.3 and it has been beautiful so far. (I hope)

Apps I have installed:

Appbrain (have a feeling this is messing something up)
Dolphin Browser HD
Engadget
Facebook for Android (complete crap)
ES File Explorer
Google Translate
Handcent SMS
Launcher Pro
Google Maps
Pandora
ROM Manager Paid Version
Shazam
ShootMe
SystemPanel Full
Titanium Backup
Twitter
XDA app

Mine has rebooted about 8 times in the last 3 hours. Some interesting things I've noticed:

  • It reboots whether I have a task killer running/installed or not.
  • I am also having trouble staying connected to 3G here at my office (though it says I have 4 bars of signal).
  • The reboots only happen when I am not holding the phone, but do seem to occur often right after I have plugged the phone in to the car charger (makes me wonder if maybe there is some kind of electrical issue?).

Definitely a weird problem. Seems to be a very recent problem as well. Maybe an app that we all have (wink* Facebook for HTC *wink) got an update that is causing it? I'm to exausted from running tests for all my other problems on the phone to test this too extensively. My poor EVO can barely stay on it's so powerful... or I'll just keep telling myself that at least.

This happened to me a few times WITHOUT ATK installed. This was the 1st week I had the phone. It was I believe from settings/menus which never loaded, I abandoned, and then they probably sucked up memory and killed the OS at some point. I've had ATK installed since then and not a single hang/reboot.

What are you using ATK to kill? I stopped using task killers completely, but I'm just curious what people are using them to kill now that the EVO has been out for a little time now.

I run ATK periodically to kill processes and then I use ATK to kill ATK so it isn't running in the background (no need for it to). That's all I use it for.

Nice thanks for the info on that. I'm still torn between using a task killer and not. It's weird to me that it is supposedly bad for the OS to kill tasks cause they are supposed to sit dormant till needed... but they don't. They sit there and suck up tons of data and run anyway. What to do, what to do? Who to trust? lol

And about the random rebooting thing, I never see my phone reboot anymore, but I know it does cause my "Time since unplugged" timer will be reset. And my phone indefinitely reboots like a machine gun 4-5 times when I plug it into my computer as a Disk Drive with USB debugging active. Need to test this with USB debugging off to see if that's causing it. The battle rages on!

Good luck all!

so my phone only rebooted itself one day, 3 times, it's otherwise been fine. however i saw something that *might* help.

i did the unrevoked2, & because of that was motivated to install Rom Manager, which i had no real reason to look at before. well, within Rom Manager there is an option to "fix user permissions (this often fixes force close problems)".

so maybe dl'ing rom manger just to use the fix permissions may help. idunno, just throwing it out there.

After disabling facebook sync, I have turned "always on mobile network" off again, and am getting no reboots.

My phone started rebooting this afternoon out of the blue.
The only thing I did different today was to turn off Face book auto syncing.
I rechecked it about 45 minutes ago. So far so good.
I will update this post in a few hours.
