Root Evo Wont Turn ON

sokoto

Newbie
I was rooting my phone yesterday followed all of the steps in the command prompt. I was able to get a temporary root in z4root then the guide said to reboot bootloader and wait 5 minutes for the PCIMG Zip file to load and then hit volume up to install. The part to install the zip file never came up and I believe my phone died. I have it plugged into the wall and I cant seem to turn it on at all, I took the battery out and tried that to no avail. Im not sure what to do at this point, Id like to have my phone rooted for the wireless tether but not sure if my phone is bricked if so how do I go about doing a hard reset, assuming thats my only alternative if one at that.

Does it turn on at all? Can you get back to the hboot at all with power and volume down?

If you plug it into the computer, does it recognize the phone at all?

It wont turn on at all I tried the power button and doing the power with volume down, I think the issue might be because of a dead battery both my parents have evo's so I can test that theory later tonight but I havent been able to get it to turn on yet.

Yeah the phone wont charge when in recovery or hboot plugged in or not...supposed to make sure you have a good charge before you start. Charge your battery in their phone or borrow their battery to finish rooting yours, I suggest the former so they wont have a useless phone while you finish the root process. Anyhow get the battery charged then get back to us.

Alright thanks a lot and I really appreciate the quick response I hope I can get this working, I really want to to get the wireless tether feature going. I shouldve done this rooting on the weekend I just wanted to get it done early so when I have the Ipad Im ready to go but hopefully I can get it booting and you can lead me on the right track.

good point xtreme you would think it would charge while the phone is off though...if it doesnt i would try to charge it in another phone.

On a similar yet side note if my gfs samsung completely discharges the damn thing wont come back on until it has set on the charger for a few hours. I pull the battery for a few seconds to let the caps discharge, works sometimes.

Edit: by a few i meant at least 10.

Yea theres no LED Orange light on the EVO indicating that its charging, I currently have it connected to an outlet, Im not home yet to start switching batteries and what not.

yeah hers doesnt show an led either when it COMPLETELY discharges like that. I'll try a battery pull for a bit if that doesnt work i put it on the charger for a couple hours and when i get it back on it always has charge to it even though the light wasnt showing. I just assumed its because her intercept is a piece of shit but maybe its an li-ion thing.

either way when you get the battery charged and can get to hboot you can probably be saved here.

Though it doesnt matter too much now, I suggest unrevoked 3 rooting method in the sticky, rooting for dummies. Z4 root wont unlock nand, s-off. You will be able to run an app requiring root but thats just about it. No flashing anything, you cant write to /system with z4...hopefully thats all you wanted was to run tether. If you reboot you'll have to run z4 again, though if thats ok with you then go for it.

Ill try doing another battery pull and see what happens hopefully that fixes it either way tonight hopefully Ill be ready to start messing around with it. Personally I think if I follow the guide and with your help the rooting for method dummies would be a great thing to try it seems like theres some awesome options but Im new to rooting and what not but Im tech savyy so Im sure I can catch on quickly but Im not really sure how to follow the guide even though I already followed a different rooting technique with z4 and everything not sure if that will interfere or make doing the unrevoked 3 method more difficult.

no it wont affect anything because z4 root is temporary. We can start from the top with unrevoked.

Im nore sure what you had to do for z4 but i think you just had to run the apk, it does its thing, and it downloaded the pc36img file and flashes it in hboot, where you got stuck. We'll make sure you can get your phone on first, then check to see if its rooted temp by z4, if not we'll kick off from the top off the dummies guide.

Awesome dude sounds like a plan thanks for all the help so far!

EDIT: Yes I dont think I did a permanent root, I did a temp root then got stuck just like you said so hopefully tonight I can get the battery and phone on and then get this unrevoked root working.

I'm pretty sure even the perm root option on z4 will still only temp root an evo.it will not unlock nand still. No matter though.

No sorry this is my only computer lol. Well other than a work laptop. You can always pm but might as well ask here so everyone can see.

How charged does the battery have to be? Does it have to be fully charged or would it work with 50%+ either way on my way home shortly to get it charging I'd really to follow the root for dummies guide and figure out how to install that Elite Series 2 ROM by Koni but I wouldnt know the first thing about installing ROM's and what not but his ROM looks great.

I would say a minimum of 50%. It might be ok under that but better safe than sorry.

As far as flashing roms, while you wait for the battery to charge up read the Rooting for Dummies guide section called "after rooting". It tells you step by step how to make backups, wipe, and flash.

Alright sounds great Im wondering after a temporary root do I lose all of the things on my phone storage like the contacts and what not? I know I can get all my gmail things back but Im worried about the internal phone stuff I lost when my first EVO's charged port was defected, I lost some paid apps and contacts etc..

Contacts in your phone I believe you can export to your sdcard and import once you get it set up. Apps, I would write them down. The market might remember them but that is hit and miss. Until you flash a rom though, your phone will be the same as it is now after you root it other than being able to use root only apps and being able to make backups

Ok I just got my evo to turn on, Ill scroll up and see what to do next.

EDIT: My phone booted back normally should I just back up my things and follow the guide?

I would backup your contacts and apps if possible. Then follow the steps in the Rooting for Dummies guide to get your phone rooted.

Alright Im working on it, for some odd reason I am using my mom's battery and I plugged my dead battery into her phone and there is no LED light and the phone wont turn on or charge, Im thinking it could be defected but it was working fine which makes no sense.

It is sweet. I've flashed it to two phones so far. About to be 3
