Root Evo won't turn on

vashp2029

Lurker
Hey everyone! My Evo is rooted and I've been using CM7 for quite some time now. Since the battery life isn't the greatest on these phones, I have an extra battery. So basically I charge one battery while my phone runs on the other and swap them out every night so that my phone never has to be connected to a charger. This hasn't given me any problems until now. This evening, I swapped out the battery and tried to turn the phone on with no luck. If I hold the power button, it vibrates three times and the screen remains off. If I hold the volume down button along with the power button, it vibrates five times but the screen remains off.

I swapped out two different batteries (I know both are fully charged) and it does the same thing. It's weird because once I hit the power button once, it won't even vibrate again until I remove the battery and put it back in. I'm confused as to what's going on. Thanks in advance.

Sorry I'm a bit confused as to what you want me to do. If you mean press power and volume without the battery in and connected to the charger, I tried that and nothing happens. If you mean press and hold power and volume while putting the battery in, the same thing happens; it vibrates five times and screen remains off.

From the sounds of it you can't get to the H-Boot screen at all.

Try pulling out the battery and holing power for ~10 seconds just to make sure the phone is fully discharged.

Then put the battery back in and hold power + volume down to get to your H-Boot/bootloader screen. If you can get here we shouldn't have any problems getting you back up and running.

If you can't get there, we may have another brick issue that seems to be happening to a lot of CM7 users lately :(

EDIT: I'm a slow typer. Ocn was referring to holding power and volume down with the battery in the phone.

So you cant get to the H-Boot screen at all eh?

No luck... I'm not sure if this stuff helps you guys diagnose the cause but I've been reading common problems with Evos and feel I should mention a few things. First, I was using ES Task Killer which seemed to work fine but apparently task killers are evil. Second, over the past few weeks, I'd notice the phone would restart itself sometimes without any apparent reason. It only did this once a week or so, so I didn't think much of it. I'm not sure if the problems are related in any way.

EDIT: No, no luck getting into HBOOT. If I could get there, it would be fairly easy to just restore a nandroid backup but since the screen won't turn on at all I'm not sure what to do.

EDIT 2: I just noticed that AFTER I press power and volume and it vibrates five times, the green notification light starts blinking. It doesn't stop until I remove the battery.

Its normal for it to vibrate 3x when you hot power and volume up, not sure whats causing it when you hit volume and power down.

I don't what to do now. I looked through all the threads talking about this issue and it seems like most people that have this problem have dead batteries. I know that's not the case because I tried three different batteries, all that I know are fully charged. Odds of all three failing in the same day seem miniscule.

The only thing that i can think of if you havent already is check the contacts where the battery conects to the phone and see if they are dirty or bent or loose. Doing battery changes every day may have done something.

I just let it sit and it seems to be working again. This phone has given me more problems than it's worth. I can't wait until my contract is up so I can get rid of it.

Regardless, thanks a bunch for your help guys.

As a suggestion, you might want to download an app like battery monitor widget and use that to monitor the phones temp. I have seen my wife's phone do something similar when it got really hot and shut off. She uses her's for internet alot at home and it gets pretty warm. Not sure if you were doing anything like that before you swapped the battery or not but it may be a reason for this.

Were you using a sbc kernel with CM7? Just curious

How come you never what to plug your phone into a charger? Sounds like a big hassle with changing batteries all the time?

I'm actually not sure what kernel I'm using. I haven't done anything to replace the kernel so.... I'd like to change kernels since I've heard some are faster with CM7 than others but there's so many out there that it's hard to pick one. I really don't want to go through the hassle of trying out several to see which is faster.

Also, I don't plug it in because I'm a college student so I'm never really home or in my car. Since I have no idea where I'll be it makes more sense for me to carry around the extra battery then to carry around a charger and find an outlet and wait for the phone to charge.

The white screen is your bootloader screen. The fact that you can get into that is a good thing.

Try to select recovery from the white screen. If you can get into your recovery we can get you up and running.

I had the same problem but when held volume down + power this white screen appeared and I don't know what to do next?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
like rxpert said if you can go to hboot (bootloader) you are good to go. also if you can get to recovery that also is very good. so please let us know what you can get into.
