Exchange ActiveSync on HTC Hero

Has anyone been able to sync with the Exchange Global Address Book/List?

When I contacted HTC and asked if the People application (using Active Sync) supported this, they replied (and I quote):

"Please note that your device runs Android, which is not created by Microsoft. Due to this your device won

i've set up exchange activesync on my hero and once in a while it will sync. but it is sporadic. it looks like things are syncing - the little syncing icon shows up, and the phone appears to be working. buto mail actually comes through. and then randomly some messages from my inbox will appear on my phone! but not all of them...and not all the time. for example, i haven't gotten my inbox to sync in the last three days at all. i have deleted my account from my phone and set it all up again but it still won't sync. has anyone else experienced this?

I just got my Hero yesterday and it setup and is working flawlessly with my Exchange (sherweb.com). It did throw up an invalid cert warning when I first setup which I thought was strange, but has worked great ever since.

Have you ran into any problems yet syncing with Exchange using sherweb.com?

Hi there,

So, to be clear...is it not possible to use the Exchange Sync functionality without switching off SSL?

If that's the case, then anybody wanting to connect an Android phone to a corporate network is going to have big problems, because not many large IT departments will allow it.

A friend has bought an HTC Hero and cannot connect to Exchange...is there a workaround or solution?
Thanks.

hiya
I can confirm that hero can work with Ms exchange and SSL turned on. My company is normally pretty strict, ie. the SE W902 cant sync since it handshakes as unanimous (i have read), but the hero has no problems at all

Hi, yes it can work with Exchange and SSL provided there's either a valid server certificate or the server is not configured to require passwords as Phoentje mentioned above.

I wish there was a way to test this on my work server before purchasing. If Exchange sync doesn't work, I can't use it. I really want this phone, though. It looks fantastic.

I Have an updated HTC Hero and have connected it with our exhange server 2007. BUT i cant see any mails, only the folders, no synk is working (calender, contacts or mail) just get a error message "synchprotocol error". I can send mail from my phone trough the exhange and I have verified that the HTC has connection with the server. Any suggestions for me ?

I had the same problem with my Hero, this is how i solved it:

When looking at the virtual directory in internet explorer and trying to login:

https://servername/oma

I got the following error:

"A System error has occurred while processing your request. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact your administrator."

If you have same problem follow this guide from Microsoft:

Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access errors occur when SSL or forms-based authentication is required for Exchange Server 2003

Guess for most in will be Method 2 to solve the problem.

After that my device synced fine.

Hope this solves your issues aswell.

I'm trying to dump all of our older problematic WinMo phones (Ace, Q9C, etc...) and have ordered 2 Hero's to test.

I run Exchange 2007 and use an Equifax wildcard SSL cert on my servers...Any known issues with wildcards? The Palm Pre wouldn't work with wildcards when it was first released (its since been fixed) so I'm hoping Sprint learned their lesson.

Thanks in advance for the info!

Can anyone help me test a problem i am having with Exchange ActiveSync (EAS). I can sync fine but recurring events created in outlook (outlook 2007, exchange 2003 sp2) are not editable individually on the hero's calendar. When you open a recurring event and click 'edit' it only gives the option to edit the entire series. there is no way to decouple the event from the series. Also, when creating a new event, is there no way to specify a condition such as 'every other week' ?? Calendar limitations are driving me lunch. can someone else syncing this way confirm the same issue so I know I am not crazy or it's not some kind of odd config issue on my side before I take this back. thank you, js

Went to At&t store just for the heck of it. punched in all my exchange settings on an iPhone. sync'ed the calendar and lo and behold - it all came over and the recurring appointments were just fine. I was able to edit them individually no problem... just had to rule out my server side setup.

can anyone else replicate this ? nobody out there uses exchange server ?

I can't log on to my works exchange server either. And I think the issue is as others have mentioned in this thread that the Hero can't connect if SSL connection is required. I remember when I setup my old mogul a while back that once it was connecting it asked me to turn on pw lock and to create a password before it would connect.

The hero doesn't give me that option which is why I think that this is the problem. Because as far as my IT dept. i'm entering all the correct server and domain names as well as user name and pw yet I still can't connect.

They need to fix this.

I was actually not having problems syncing with exchange. that appears to work. I was referring to my previous post as far as changing appointments that are part of a recurring series. The phone does not allow changing of a single event in a series - it's all or none. I tested it sync'ing with google calendar and it does give the option to change just one appointment in the series so it is clearly an issue with EAS. I contacted HTC and they tried to tell me this was by design but I don't buy that.. it doesn't make any sense. I thought a work-around would be to sync outlook with google calendar with google sync tool but it works horribly. It seems to just skip random appointments. There are pages and pages of people complaining about it.. oh well, back to the drawing board.. maybe the palm pre has had some good updates..

I know this didnt work for me. I could see my folders..but no mail. So my IT dept did a service pack upgrade to 2007 exchange. Then it worked....the proper config is found in the article i am posting...THIS WORKS!!! I now have all my email from my exchange account from work. I also have used the calender, which functions perfectly.

Guide - Configuring Exchange Active Sync on HTC Hero Android Device

Show this article to your IT, and it should b perfect.

works 100% on exchange 2007 - we have a valid SSL cert though. make sure you enter your domain as the netbios - eg foo.co.uk just enter foo

password and everything is 100% ok - the only thing that didnt work is remote wipe...

I have to say - the email application is pretty poor.. I think you have to goto folders and then sync those ones rather than selecting to sync x x x and it syncs just 1 folder at a time... so you wont know you have email in other folders... bit poor really

actually I like that malfunction. My appts are for me, and I've been trying to find a way to have people listed as attendees for my own tracking, but not have emails sent to them. They don't want them. But I haven't found a way to do that just yet on a normal basis.
Have Exchange and Active Sync running OK but when changing an appointment - say the time for example - it does not send updates to the attendees. Otherwise it seems to work normally. I am told by HTC that this will be a server problem:) Any thoughts?

Hi,

I have had the same problem. After I used the TouchDown (www.nitrodesk.com) application it seemed to work.
But I finally found out what the problem is.
The HTC HERO Android operating system has got the problem with some MS Exchange policies.
Now if you have (normally every company has) enabled that you have to give a password to connect to your company email you will fail on your HTC HERO.
This is because atm the HTC HERO is missing something that can send back your encrypted password etc..
So here is what u need to do:
Go to your Exchange server (if you can not do it yourself ask your system admin) and go to the properties of the Mobile Services > On the general Tab open de "Device Security". On the Device Security tab you can see that "Enforce password on device" is enabled. This is causing your problem!!... Now you do not want to disabled this for your entire company but you can exclude yourself from having to enter a password to read your email. So go to "Exeptions" and have your domain\username filled in there.

Problem solved.

Thanks for the help, but I cannot see Device Security under Mobile Properties. The whole button is missing! Why can't I see it? I'm using SBS 2003. I just got a Hero, had a palm pre, but I NEED exchange to work or I'll have to return my Hero :(

We did not have to do this. Perhaps this is an exchange 2003 issue. Regardless, I would research before you do this work around and make sure it does not allow any vulnerabilities with those selected accounts. It probably doesn't but I'd double check.

Exchange 2003 works fine with the HTC....

Exchange oma page needs no SSL and the IT guys wont be happy about that. Lucky thats my job, so heres how I just reconfigured my little (2000 user) exchange server... took about 20mins and does involve IIS being down for about 5 mins.

The exchange virtual directory requires SSL and theres no way you should turn this off. However you can create a copy of the exchange virtual directory, turn off SSL but only allow one computer (the same exchange server) to access it. This way the initial connection from the website is SSL, but connection from the website to the exchange backend is http... this is ok, because its only talking to itself.

Exchange ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile Access errors occur when SSL or forms-based authentication is required for Exchange Server 2003

My HTC Hero now works with exchange 2003 activesync....

It doesnt need a godaddy cert (we use ipsCA), exchange 2007 might be different as 2007 activesync requres some additional info specified in a special SSL cert (UCC) which only a few places provide at an extra cost.

Hope that helps.

I believe I have found the issue with Android and Exchange.

Everyone having problems syncing with exchange check your user name.
If there is a space in the the user name like: First Last it will fail to connect to the exchange server. What is really happening is Android see the space as an error and doesn't even try to connect to the exchange server.

I just made my user name FirstLast and everything start working right away. I have tested this on other accounts and also never had this issue when using a windows based phone on the same server, so it must be the way android sees the space.

Hope this helps.

I also reported this to Sprint and they said they would pass it on to their techs but said nothing of passing this on to HTC or Google

I can sync mail and contacts with Exchange 2007 without issue. I cannot for the life of me sync the calendar. Just see the message "Synchronization is experiencing problems." I have uninstalled and reinstalled the account on the Hero, changed the Domain using the .local extension...nothing. Any other suggestions.
