Root Explain to me like I'm five step by step how to root my phone..

AndyOpie150 has agreed to help me root my phone step by step as I am VERY new to doing anything like this, and reading the guides by myself is confusing. He told me to make a thread for it so when other new people join the forums, they can see a simple version with explanations as its happening. Right now he is doing something but I thought I would get the thread started so its ready when they are.

So Andy, when you get back, feel free to help me get started with knowing that as of right now I havn't taken any steps as to what I need to do, to perform a root, or any steps that i should do before i start to root.

Also to speed up the first question I think you will ask, I am running 2.2.2.

Well first off you will need USB drivers here and you will need to restart your computer afterwards to make sure they are installed correctly.

@Andy, I am using this root method only because it works with all versions.

Do I want to download the LG MOBILE SUPPORT TOOL as well? and once I plug my phone into my computer after restart if it wants to do any updates do I let it?

Edit: As of this post I have downloaded/installed the USB drivers (and restarted my computer) and currently have phone plugged into computer, awaiting further instructions.

That's an AndyOpie150 question, I don't own this phone (yet). I will have one on Monday or Tuesday.

Edit: Just hold off on that. You can update later if it's out of date.

You really don't need a computer. [App] [26.04.2011][v1.2] GingerBreak APK (root for GingerBread) - xda-developers

Sammy's knows his stuff.I need help as I'm down to one finger instead of eight. First: go to the menu/ settings/ applications/ development/ USB debugging: make sure it's cheked. The go to location and security and find the "allow unknown source's" and check it. Then download dolphin browser HD and AndroZip from the PlayStore and . Set dolphin hd to ondemand and Desktop mode. Go to first link and download the latest Gingerbreak.apk.
Open up AndroZip and go to the download or downloads folder to find the apk. Long press it and select move. Hit the back button one time and select "move here". Tap on it and choose to install it. When done select done. Back out of AndroZip and go to the app drawer and select the newly installed app. More instructions to follow.

Gingerbreak works with 2.2.2 with the Optimus V?

Went to Locations and Security, didnt see the option for allow unknown source'
I did however find it in Application settings if this is the same thing?

Set dolphin hd to ondemand and Desktop mode.

how do I do this?

Also I'm not sure which one is the latest download on the first link you gave me(there are like 3 different download links), any help with that part sammy?

also should I be downloading these links from my phone, such as that apk file, or am I downloading it to my PC and putting the file into my phone from there, and if its the second thing I said, where would I put the file?

sammyz: always has.

When you run the gingerbreak.apk it will take anywhere from 4-10 tries to obtain root. It's kind of a pain but it will never hurt your phone. After 12 min. if it hadn't rebooted your phone, then pull battery and try again. If you get an error, power off then back on and try again. PM me if you run into a problem then I jump back here.

Slow down and wait for my one finger to catch up. Be patient. The highest version number is the latest. You are not going to use your pc at all. Use the dolphin HD browser. Not just any browser, only the dolphin browser.

What's wrong with stock? I've never had an issue with the stock browser downloading this file. (As long as I'm on wifi)

Alright so I downloaded the apk, moved the file and installed it. I had no errors, but my phone also did not restart, was it suppose to, or should I keep trying to install it until it does restart my phone.

Didn't see the app drawer part, or does that only come from a restart. Also how do I get to it?

Device reeboted it self after 2nd attempt. How can I be sure it rooted correctly?

Edit: I think it did install correctly, cause I can see superuser in my app drawer

I await further instructions.

Got it, its attempting to install, will update when something happens.

It will reboot on its own when it successfully installs and after it's done rebooting you will se an app called Superuser, meaning you have successfully rooted.

@MacFett it's a heads up for Andy. He guides the Optimus M users as well. When this is all said and done, I give Andy the right to edit (as in add to/remove)/delete any of my posts in this thread for this Step by Step Guide because this will be very handy. Edit: and also to move my posts up/down.

Phone rebooted and I have superuser. Teach me what I can do with this.

Also like I said in the post before this one, I await further instructions(not rushing you andy:P)

Go to Market/Play Store and search superuser, the app is probably out of date. Update it.

When that's done, open Superuser app, press menu key>preferences>scroll all the way down> select Su binary tap to check for updates>Update>a prompt will come up while updating, select yes>press that was cool, do it again (after it's done)>and do it again.

How many times do I want to do it again? I have done it twice already and can do it another time, should I?

Edit: Everything is up to date in superuser as far as i can tell.

Okie Dokie.
Now you need to download the next two downloads. The recovery and the flash image GUI. Put the recovery in the same place you put the apk after downloading it. The flash image GUI as well. Install the flash image GUI then go to your app drawer and select it. Instructions are pretty simple. This will install the recovery. After installing the recovery let me know what you got.

You do it again twice (total of 3x in all), this ensures it's all up to date, I've had bad updates with it before even after doing it twice something was red instead of green..
