Help Facebook sync is getting on my nerves!

I'm having the same issues so I just deleted facebook for htc sense there doesn't seem to be a real workaround for this... thanks for all your efforts tho NKT

No, there is no way around this. They show up as long as FB for HTC Sense is configured.

NKT, I have a two part question.

Is the only away around this to not use the FB for HTC Sense app and only use the regular FB app that's preinstalled. Will using the regular FB app insure that my FB friends with there phone numbers listed under there profile not show up under the Phone Dialer Screen. To be honest, only a few of my close friends and family that are in my People Contacts even have a FB account. Most of my FB "friends" are people I would never call anyway.

My second question si that it would be kind of nice to have a picture show up with my contacts. Is there anyway to attach a photo to my People Contacts instead of using FB?

Thanks

No matter what you do, if you configure facebook for this phone, all your facebook friends who have a phone number listed in their profile will appear in the dialer behind the phone screen. Additionally, a similar "problem" is present with gmail. Every person I've ever e-mailed is in my contacts.

Now I'm not talking about my "People" folder, I mean when I go to compose a new email or something it pops up the possible "contacts" I might want to select. Why are "contacts" even seperate from "People" in the first place?

I can live with this, but the facebook contacts in the dialer screen is completely unacceptable for me. I've already called someone by mistake that I went to high school with. Until theres an option to remove FB friends from the dialer I have no choice but to remove facebook for htc sense completely. This is kind of a drag since this is supposed to be some kind of great "social networking" device and the blackberry im switching over from had far superior facebook integration.

I've tested this on a motorola droid and when you open the facebook app theres an option under settings to
A) Sync all friends
B) Sync only friends in my contacts
C) Sync no friends

This option is not present on the HTC Inc so there is cleary a difference between the "FB for Android" app and the "FB for HTC Sense" app. I suspect it doesnt really have anything to do with the problem though because on the Moto Droid when you pull up the dialer it only displays your contacts instead of some combination of facebook contacts, your phonebook, and every person you've ever emailed.

I don't know if it's possible to filter out the FB contacts in the dialer. I'll do some digging.

But I have to ask, if you don't want them in People or in the dialer, why set up FB for HTC Sense?

I don't want them all in people or in the dialer but I do want to link certain people in people to their fb

seems if you don't sync your contacts you can't link "People" to facebook

^ Exactly.

What we need to do is tell HTC that we demand an option to "Sync only friends in my contacts" like on the Droid or previous HTC Sense devices.

Just to be sure this still occurs when using the normal FB and not FB for HTC?

I can't even get teh regular fb app to run only the htc sense one works.

Same thing here, the standard facebook app won't run. I downloaded "facebook sync" from the market and despite lukewarm reviews it works perfectly for me. It allows you to individually link facebook contacts to your address book without syncing anything. The only downside I can see to this is that all this program seems to do is login to facebook and download a users picture and add it to your address book so if a user changes their facebook picture you have to manually update it. Better than nothing I guess

Don't know it this was discussed yet, but I just found Contact Remover in Appbrain, maybe this will work to delete unwanted FB contacts in the contact list after sync?

EASY to do. Click on the contact you have that is on face book. At the top right of the screen, well, top right and down a bit, you will see a little link thing, click on it. And you can link you contact from facebook to your phone. Didnt take me long to do all of mine.

I hate that my facebook frends are in my dialer and show up when I search. The most annoying thing I have ever seen on a phone. Like eveeyone else I want to link my own contacts with their facebook but do not need or want my facebook friends in my dialer. Plain and simple. Why is this so complicated? I unchecked sync contacts in FB from htc sense, why are they still there?!?!?!?! Any WHY does the other normal "Facebook" sync not even work?

Has anyone found a fix to this yet? Its killing me too! I just want to link my contacts and that's it!

We should all collectively email HTC.

If I didn't have AP tests to study for, I'd write a long letter detailing the problem to have each member here individually email to HTC :). After getting 40 copies of the same email they'd have to update it.

I did email them and got some stupid response about how to remove them from the "People" view when I specifically stated that i wanted to remove them from the phone dialer and I understood how to remove them from the people view. Its like they didn't even read my question (or it was a rep from another country who can't comprehend/understand english very well which is probably the case). Maybe someone else will have better luck.

I emailed them too, but haven't heard anything back yet. Will definitely post on here when I do though. It's VERY disappointing how they obviously put so much of an emphasis on being able to link different types of info about your contacts, but screwed the pooch so badly on this aspect of Facebook integration.

Is there a way to use the original picture (from storage/camera) or change it back that way in the contacts instead of it being that persons f/b picture. When I click the contact and go to edit picture, the picture I want displayed is there, but when you go back to the contacts, it shows the f/b picture.

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Holy Crap, I think I just figured out Everyones problem...Maybe...well definitly mine and it might help Everyone.

As you can see above. when my contacts synced above, their f/b picture was displayed..I didn't like/want that...so here goes!:D

1:go to your contacts.
2:tap the contact
3:tap the name on top (contact next to the picture)

You will see that the picture now has a down arrow on it!!!:D

4:tap the picture!

5: It will now allow you to select the contact photo of your choice...YEAH!!!:D

6:select photo.
7:tap done.

Now the part that helps those who do not want facebook contacts show.

1:got to contacts
2:menu
3:unclick facebook
4:click done

Only the contacts you want shown will be there and the contacts you want to facebook, you open that contact and tap the facebook profile...

I hope this helps Everyone!!!!

^ That trick is very well known, but does nothing for solving the problem of having all one's FB contacts in all contacts.

But thanks for the tip on how to change the display picture.

Kind of a work-around maybe???

What i did is i edited the contact information of the people i usually talk/text with the most and place them in a separate group (i used 'Favorites').

I then used the add folder option and selected 'starred' which is the list of Favorites friends I call the most. So instead of selecting the People icon I select the 'Starred' folder and it brings up a list of those people only.

Or you can go to People from the Home Screen and then select the 2nd bottom icon for groups and select Favorites (this will show pictures also).

If there's a way to isolate the data in a database format it would be a lot easier to go through X amount of names from your facebook account.

Not exactly fixing the problem but working around it.

^ Again, I'm not sure how that's any better than editing the "view" in People.

If the contacts search used "people" (or, in your case, your folder or "favorites") that would be a solution.

On top of the problem with the contacts showing in the dialer... there's a bigger issue.

With Bluetooth and car systems.

I've got a VW with a nice Bluetooth system and touchscreen navi. It pulls the entire "phonebook" from the phone every time it connects.

Problem is, it is pulling Facebook contacts as well... :(

Completely pointless for me and makes me want to kill someone. I want contact linking for my existing contacts so I can pull their pictures, but I don't need all 300-ish facebook friends on my car's damn bluetooth system!

Just got an email today:

Hi, I'm Victor, and I will be glad to assist you today. When you log into Facebook for HTC Sense it links your Facebook account to your device and will pull all your friends onto your device. There are no settings you can change to just pull certain contacts onto your device. At this time we have no information on any updates that will allow you to choose what friends to put on your device. If you have any other questions feel free to reply. Next time I should ask why I can't use "Facebook for android", even though it's in "Accounts and Sync"

Oh, and for the record, I sent this email Friday.

Very disappointing indeed.........I'm running the leaked 2.1 upgrade for the Eris and am encountering the same issue. This was not the case with 1.5- it only synced your phone contacts with Facebook where now it brings over ALL Facebook contacts to your device contact list....I use the People widget to make calls and can filter out Facebook contacts there but when composing a new email or text message it automatically queries the device contact list which includes all the facebook folks.......SUPER ANNOYING.

I imaging once the real 2.1 OTA comes out for the Eris there will be many people up in arms because this is a significant change from 1.5 (for the worse).

Seems like an easy fix for HTC------add a setting to only sync facebook with contact that already exist on the phone.......OR................actually allow you to manually sync contacts with Facebook without downloading your entire friends list to your device. Come on HTC!

I think my next device will be a vanilla Android (no htc sense, no moto blur)= more frequent/faster updates and no bloatware..........i like Sense for the most part but it is proving cumbersome with each iteration..........

This has been a big problem for me as well. I tried some mix and matching with things and have pretty much come to the same conclusion that others have.

There is no way to link any contact to Facebook without pulling ALL Facebook friends into the dialer list.

This wasn't such a big issue as far as the People application, as many have noted and I have seen there is a way to filter out viewing Facebook only people in "People". The issues comes from the dialar.

I tried installing "Facebook for Sense" with JUST the status updates and then manually linking the few contacts I wanted with a Facebook account but it wouldn't let me. So, until some new firmware or something is released, I don't see this issue being fixed. Either have to dial from the contacts app, scroll through all the Facebook numbers, or have no facebook contacts linked.
