Facebook - Update

I was using FriendStream, decided to give the new app a change. Looked nice until I got the same battery issue as the rest! Uninstalled. Then FriendStream didn't work anymore. Had to clear out its account data to finally get things back to normal. Is the Twitter app somehow involved in all of this as well? I tried it also in lieu of FriendStream.

that's exactly what happened to me. i went back to the pre-update fb app because of the battery wake time issue, then friendstream was broken. the only fix was to dump data and actually delete the account and re-input. which made it work, but then all my contacts are screwed up again. this is very frustrating. did they not test this update at all? sheesh.

I wondered why my battery was so low this morning! I checked and the FB app was preventing the phone from sleeping. Uninstalled the update and it sleeps once again.

But, I do have a somewhat related comment. I have 2 Facebook apps - one is the Facebook for HTC Sense and the other is the Facebook app whose update we are all complaining about. Neither one can be uninstalled. I knew the one for HTC Sense was that way but I was surprised the other one could also not be uninstalled, or am I missing something?

the Facebook app is the problem, and all you can do is uninstall updates

I was able to uninstall it without any problems. Of course, I used an app to uninstall it :) Try downloading Uninstaller.

Or, if you are useing Launcher Pro you can do it from your homescreen. Long press the app and drag it to the trash. Hold it over the trash can for a couple of seconds and it will say "drop to uninstall".

The only thing I can think that I am doing different is that I don't sync anything. Every box in my facebook options is unchecked. My refresh is set to "never".

I don't sync facebook or google on my phone, both are turned off. The only thing I sync is my weather app, which is set for every 2 hours.

I am using Launcher Pro, but I am not rooted, which means no custom roms. Just the plain ol 2.1 that came with the phone.

The phone was rebooted yesterday afternoon specifically so I could reset the times and keep an eye on it. My Uptime is 18:56 and Awake is 1:58. My battery hasn't been charged since I took it off the charger yesterday morning (around 10am) and the facebook app was updated the night before (around 11pm).

As you can see, I barely used my phone in the last 19 hours. I tried to minimize what I was doing so I could test this out and didn't want other programs to possibly interfere with my little test ;)

Partial Wake Usage since I rebooted yesterday afternoon, using BatteryLeft.

Looks like people are getting cranky and starting to blog about this now.

http://geekfor.me/news/facebook-1-3-wakelock/ news: Facebook 1.3 Not Releasing Partial Wake Lock Geek For Me – Sprint Evo 4g & CDMA Hero

Found this part to be interesting...

Just having Facebook installed on your phone isn’t going to cause the Wake Lock. It isn’t getting set until you actually run the application and log in. From there on your phone isn’t going to sleep properly until you restart your phone or until Android kills the task.

Of the people that had battery issues how many are sync'ing contacts?

I'm running stock rom with sync'ing every 1 hour without issues but I don't sync contacts.

i had the partial wakelock issue, and i had everything turned off.

i went back to 1.2 til they fix it...

Two words, simply amazing.....

except it isn't. it's better, but "simply amazing?" not even close, imho...

- still no native notifications
- still no ability to refresh notifications more than every 30 minutes
- still no fb chat
- still takes you outside the app when you click on a notification

just to name a few...

CharlieD,

How exactly did you determine that the FB app was preventing the phone from sleeping? I am just curious since I am trying to establish a routine check to ensure other apps run nicely.

thanks in advance.

And do what, exactly?

Wiggle your nose and polietly ask the Facebook App to behave itself :D

Really... after seeing the logs (in that link I posted) I am pretty convinced that there is a problem with the way the app was coded.

Earlier this morning I posted screenshots of my phone sleeping like a baby. Then I read that article. I realized that my little "test" wasn't too accurate since I haven't actually opened the app since I rebooted my phone.

Probably did the same thing I did. Noticed that the phone wasn't sleeping, killed it using a task manager, and then noticed that the phone was going back to sleep. Ever since the update, my battery has been getting killed.

I haven't uninstalled it yet, but for the amount I use it, I should.

my phone has been sleeping, no problems there. I'm just getting a force close every time i click on friends.

My phone has a timeout of 1 minute, I literally watched the phone DIM, then go to sleep after 1 minute. I did not lock the phone manually, i simply watched the screen shut off after 1 minute. That defines sleeping right?

Well, I did that, but I also have a couple of apps - Battery left and Spare Parts - which both give you access to battery history. When I chose Partial Wake usage, FB was at the top of the list and the bar representing the amount of wake time was a lot longer than anything else.

I thought so, too, at first, but that's not the case. It's just the display turning off. See my reply (one or two above this one most likely) to see how I found out FB was not sleeping.

If there's a better way to find out what's keeping it awake, I'm sure someone will speak up.

are you SURE it's sleeping? locking the screen and letting it sit there will look like it's sleeping, but it probably isn't...

I agree. I think some posts here are from people that are unaware of what "sleep" means for their phones.

I've been killing the fb app after every time I use it. I don't want to uninstall because I think the new feature implementations are good, but I absolutely hate that the app was not coded well

Well let me explain why my phone is still sleeping ok.

First, i confirmed it's sleeping because i rebooted phone, left it alone during the boot and waited 10 minutes. It said up time 10 minutes, awake time 20 seconds. so its definitely sleeping.

but also, i have NOTHING setup for sync in my accounts and sync page. I dont like facebook getting updates on the fly, and I dont like facebook updating on me, so i have it set to never. The reason i'm not affected by this is because i check my notifications when i actually open up FB and look manually. I dont have anything set to sync no the "sync" page, not weather, gmail, or facebook. That is why i'm not getting a problem.

The only problem i get is when i get an FC when i click on friends.

Nope, that defines "screen off" :)

Now, when the screen times off the phone should go to sleep then (or right after). But this app is keeping the phone awake due to poor coding.

Check out the link that I posted: News: Facebook 1.3 Not Releasing Partial Wake Lock Geek For Me – Sprint Evo 4g & CDMA Hero

Despite it’s name a partial wake lock is actually the “worst”. It will allow your screen to turn off both automatically and by you doing it yourself, however the CPU and your phone itself will still stay “awake.”

And

Just having Facebook installed on your phone isn’t going to cause the Wake Lock. It isn’t getting set until you actually run the application and log in. From there on your phone isn’t going to sleep properly until you restart your phone or until Android kills the task.

Menu/Settings/About Phone/Battery.

Look at the Up Time and the Awake Time. Now leave the phone alone for say 5 minutes or whatever. Then go back into the screen described above and look at those two times. Up time should have increased by 5 minutes. If your phone is sleeping, then Awake Time will have increased by less than 5 minutes, eg. 1 minute would probably be OK. But if Awake Time has also increased 5 minutes, then your phone did not "sleep" at all.
