Facebook - Update

Just wondering, so is the Facebook application that's already on the phone the same application in the market? Because when I went to the market, it didn't say that it was installed or available for the update, which made it seem that they were two completely different applications.

My battery widget (BatteryLeft) tells me all of that information. Breaks it down really well, too.

I don't use spare parts either but I do use Android System Info. It has tons of information and I haven't had a problem with it.

Thanks Terabethia. This is also the same widget that I use. I assume that if I check "Partial Wake Time" under the History area of this widget, it lists the most battery intensive apps that work when phone is awake. Currently I am seeing the "Android System" as the most intense with a little under half of the bar shaded green.

Yep, that's correct.

Like I said, I am not having any problems at all with the update, but I assume that's because I turned off any and all syncing/updating features.

To be sure, I rebooted the phone last night, charged it overnight and took it off this morning. Right now I am at 13 hours, 10 minutes for Uptime and 1 hour, 34 minutes for Awake Time.

I'll keep an eye on it but it seems okay right now. And I am sure with so many people reporting problems they will get a fix out soon anyway.

anyone know yet if disabling notifications gets rid of the battery drain issue? I just disabled notifications for fb on mine, but I'm giving it a few more minutes to see if my wake time is affected.

+1 not sleeping after update :(

I have to kill the new Facebook app with System Panel in order for my phone to sleep. Highly annoying. Why is the iPhone app so much better than this one?

I haven't had any more battery time being used, no force closes, and my sleep/awake time has not been affected, I use the app all day, and its always a service in My system panel...

Don't think i've done anything special...

Yeah I haven't seen any ill effects either, I don't sync my facebook friends, but all notifications are on and I used the widget on my 2nd screen...

No problems with the update here. Friends opens up fine and phone is sleeping. No battery life difference and I have it set to check FB every 30 minutes. I did not turn sync on though. Sense FB sync works great.

My only grips about the update is the photo bar is just stupid. Wish I could turn it off. Still no way to upload videos, WTF? Notifications point you to the web instead of the App. Again, WTF?

I thought this might be the problem also, but it didn't help.

Yeah agreed hopefully one day we will get these as part of the app... A the photo bar is a nice feature, BUT we should be able to choose what it links, as random photos is just daft lol

I much prefer the iPhone/iTouch app over this one, I hate how it brings me to the web browser when I check a notification. Why can't it keep me within the app like the iPod app does? C'mooon!!!

Also had the sleep issue, so I just uninstalled it. I honestly didnt see much difference between the stock app and this "update".

Yeah I disabled notifications, stopped the service, and my wake time is still screwed up and won't sleep. The only thing I didn't try was restarting the phone, but I feel that I shouldn't have to.

I don't understand why other people are not seeing their wake time affected on their phones.

I uninstalled the update, removed facebook from my accounts & sync, then restarted and that fixed it. Just uninstalling isnt enough, you need to remove FB from accounts & sync, too.

Mine doesn't seem to be having any problems. In order to check, I rebooted the phone last night (to reset everything, including uptime and awake time) used it for a little bit and then put it on the charger. This morning I took it off and haven't really used it much.

Up time and Awake time are very much normal.

I don't have any sort of syncing or updating or anything running in the app, it's all turned off (as it's always been). I assume that's why it's going to sleep like it should.

+1
My FB App Settings are

Notifications - Inactive
Sync Contacts - Don't sync

My existing FB contacts are synced via the stock HTC FB app. My notifications for messages and comments go to one of my email accts.

there's already some time that under Contacts it says there's a problem syncing with Facebook, and when you tap on a contact picture, if the last status update has been via Facebook, the message appears but says 'via College' instead of 'via Facebook'

I just ran a test that I think you'll agree conclusively shows that this app is causing problems.

I restarted the phone to reset both "Up Time" and "Awake Time".

I turned the screen off and waited a while, then went into Settings > About Phone > Battery to take note of the time difference (Up - Awake).

I turned the screen off for a while longer and checked the times again - the Awake Time had remained constant since the first check but the Up Time had increased by several minutes.

I opened the FB app, then closed it by pressing the Back button.

I waited several more minutes, then checked the times again. The difference was exactly the same.... The phone had been Awake the entire time.

I killed the FB app via SystemPanel.

I turned off the screen and waited several more minutes. When I checked again the difference had increased by the amount of time I had waited. That is, the phone was no longer Awake when while the screen was off.

Luckily I backed up all my apps via Astro just yesterday, so I'll reinstall the previous version of FB until they publish a corrected version.

Yep, my phone has been awake since I installed it at about 1pm today. Just uninstalled the update and all is good again in Incredible world.

Perhaps it is just the contact sync that is eating our lives? If you're on an HTC ROM, you don't really even need the sync..

Could someone test installing but NOT syncing contacts, and see if the same behavior persists?

My contacts are not synced with FB before or after the update and I had the retrieve set to never.

Umm... I already did that (see my quotes below).

In fact, I have never synced contacts with Facebook. Hell, I don't even sync with Google. I much prefer to just have my phone contacts set up IN the phone and keep everything else seperate. Just because I have emailed you a few times or "friended" you on Facebook doesn't mean I need your phone number or email address in my phone :(

Yeah, thanks to this forum, I just realized my phone has been "awake" all day. My battery is at 33% when yesterday I got to 10PM and was still at 68%.

Oh Well... I reverted to the old FB, I'll upgrade when they fix.

It went away for me, I went into the fbook settings and made it sync contacts to don't sync.

I tried this last night with no success. The app would always be running in the background, even if I killed it...it would later restart itself.

I have now removed the additional FB account it created under 'Accounts & sync'...there were two and left the FB for HTC Sense...and then went to the Market and removed the updated. Things are working normally again. Friends is working correctly, and the app stops running when I close it.
