Root Factory Reset, Restoring Original Software, & Rooting

Hi,

Been reading about how to root my Evo 4G running 2.3.5 hboot 2.18. Learned that Revolutionary & Unrevoked do not work, at least initially, & that the I would need to perform many other operations first, as described by Captain_Throwback here:

So my question... If I restore the device to factory defaults, will this restore the devices original version, HBOOT, etc, so that I don't need to perform all the extra steps to achieve root, & can instead utilize Revolutionary &/or Unrevoked?

i wish it was that easy. no a factory reset only wipes your data. it does not touch anything else.

Thanks so much for the prompt reply & the link! Of course I read that page & countless others before posting here ;) The reason I thought Captain's method best, was to avoid watermarks, however warranty is not a concern so perhaps the HTCDev method is best?? Thoughts?

So you know what your dealing with here...I am no developer, but rather a 1/2 pseudo geek wanna-be, & would prefer the easier softer way, but if I'm going to jailbreak my phone, I want it to be done w/o restriction thereafter. If watermarks are the only drawback to the HTCDev method & it's a whole lot easier that the other methods, then I'll take it!

Jailbreak is a dirty word around here. ;) Thats for apple devicess. Your root androids. :)

The only drawbacks with using HTC dev is that you will not have full s-off. The S is the phones securities, they are there to make sure that anything that gets updated through the h-boot is signed by htc. So with HTc dev you cannot do things that require using the PC36IMG method such as updating your radios.

Most people dont really see any differences with updated radios, so i wouldnt worry too much about it
 
You can always do HTV dev now and finish with captn throwbacks method at any time down the road. HTC dev is the first step in captn throwbacks method for downgrading the bootloader
 
yeah like rxpert says doing the captain's method is up to you. if you truly want to be fully rooted then by all means go for it. it is really not that hard. you just need to follow directions precisely and you should be fine.

post here or there if you have any questions or need help.

My question kinda off topic in regards to the PC36IMG method not working when rooted with HTC Dev method only.....so one cannot flash a different recovery via the PC36IMG method? Just verifying that's all. I am s-off and need not worry about any PC36IMG method not working. Thanks rx!:D

Reading more now to decide what's best for me. Wish I did this sooner so I could have used a tool such as unrevoked!

there is a PC36IMG file that captain throwback has put together that will work in the bootloader. but all other PC36IMG files will not work.

Well, the device is unlocked! I only need to flash the new rom & am stuck!

First, why download Superwipe? Aren't there already wipe features w/o doing so?

And...here comes the humbling question...how the !#$*&#! do I move the rom & (possibly) Superwipe to the SD card!? Am I tired & missing something simple here or am I really a moron? And that was rhetorical... :confused:

I'm not quite certain where you're at...are you in the middle of the Captains guide right now?

do you have recovery? you will need that to flash roms. you can either:
1. boot up the phone and use it as a disk drive via usb
2. use a card reader and connect it that way
3. or you can connect the phone via usb and then go into recovery and select from the main menu: usb-ms toggle. you can then transfer the rom over.

No Captain's method...maybe later. For now performing HTCdev Method & am at the point of either using a stock rom or flashing a custom...

Yea, I tried using the device as a disk drive but not sure where to drop objects to sd card?

oops sorry root means the top level of the sd card. no folders, just on the card.

and superwipe should never replace wiping completely. it is just a fail safe too make sure that the new rom has a clean environment to install into. it is an optional step, but ihave been using for a few years now and it has never given my any issues using it.

edit: superwipe should always be used in addition to wiping.

The "root" of the SD card is the top most level of it. It means not in an subfolders. If you are on a windows machine the easiest way of making sure its on the root is to hit my computer and then drag and drop the ROM onto the drive that signifies your phone.


Superwipe is a script that automates a lot of the wiping process. It wipes the critical areas 3X each and wipes some temp files. I would suggest wiping everything in recovery except for SD card once, then flashing superwipe, then flshing the ROM.

The cleaner the phone is before you flash the ROM the better the experience you are going to have.

o.k...the "root" of the sd card is basically on the sd card, not in any type of folder, so when you install it or drag a file from computer to card and drop it in an "empty" spot, it's on the root, or not in any folder.
The superwipe is not necessary, but helpful as it wipes some stuff (not certain what stuff) 3 times.
I personally dont use it...I manually wipe stuff 2 or 3 times anyway myself

Thanks but I know what "root" means, just don't don't how to access the root of my sd card, make sense?

Presently I am in "usb-ms toggle". So how do I move the .zips using this method as well?
