Do I factory reset thru settings>privacy? When I do then I have to re install all of my contacts, email, etc? Just checking.

For some reason I had to power down and press the home+power+volume up key to do my factory reset, it wouldn't work through settings>privacy. You will keep your email on gmail, contacts backed up through gmail, market purchases, and everything on your SD card but you'll have to download and reinstall all programs though.

Does a factory reset kill your root? I'm trying to get the OTA update notice for the guys and so far i've had no luck. I was thinking of doing a factory reset to see if that would help me get the notice, but i'm worried I will lose my z4root root and not be able to root again.

As long as you can find a download of z4root & stay with 2.1 you'll be okay but beware you can nolonger get it on the market and will have to side load it back on your phone. That said, I don't think a factory reset will help in your situation and wouldn't recommend it for the reason you stated. Also be aware the update to Froyo will kill root. If you need root I recommend you wait until a solution to safely upgrade and root Froyo is found.
