Root [FAQ]ROOTING (Updated 7th April 2012)

Rooted and/or custom ROM installed. Now what?

Get Set CPU. You can create profiles to change how your CPU acts. You can save battery this way.

Get AutoKiller. This is NOT a task killer. It clears EMPTY apps from memory. These are not apps that are running in the background or doing anything. Android does itself kill these, but this application allows you to change the thresholds of memory to do this.

Get Autostarts. Each android app listens to certain events that occur on your phone. Some apps listen to events that they do not require. This app allows you to prevent some apps listening to some events. For example, I don't want photo bucket to listen for an event based on my location. I don't need it to know where I am. TuneWiki does not need to know if I have installed an application.

Have you got enough space on internal memory? If not, you could flash a ROM with A2SD+ Support. FAQ here - http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/220627-faq-apps2sd.html

What else can I do?

Well with custom ROMS, you may have the choice of installing a custom Kernel, which will run the CPU at the same speed as standard (998Mhz) but using less voltage (saving battery). This is called Undervolting.

At the same time, if you have SetCPU, you can overclock a kernel (if it permits) to run at a faster speed than normal, but at the same voltage as 998Mhz. You can compromise between the two.

I bought my Desire a while back in HK, where I live. I was repartitioning the phone's SD card for an ext-3 partition for this ROM that required it. It messed up somewhere, and broke my phone and the current ROM. I reset to factory, and it wouldn't detect SD card and computer. (so can't RUU).

So I just packed it up and sent it to the HTC Service Center in HK. 3 days later, they called me and told me to pick it up. They said that they put in a new ROM chip (not the custom firmware ROM). It was rooted but they still fixed it for free.

Don't know about you US folks, but it WAS rooted but they still DID fix it for free. Just thought I'd let you know.

P.S.: Unrevoked doesn't work anymore, it still says the firmware is too new?

What firmware and hboot have you for?

This guide is a must, basically made wiping, rooting, backing-uping, and flashing a stroll through the park. (aside from those silly little tremors and feelings of nausea that come around when the phone goes into a boot animation loop) (:
Other than that, im now happily running cyanogen7 and will most likely be getting close to no sleep at all tonight.
Once again, thanks a whole lot for this impeccable guide (FAQ)

Hi I am considering to root my HTC Desire.

Here is my current software:
Baseband
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernal Version
2.6.32.15-gf5a401chtc-kernel@and18-2#1
BuildNumber
2.29.405.5 CL293415 release-keys
Software Number
2.29.405.5

I ran the Terminal Emulator and my results showed 20,000 'erase size'. I understand I dont need to use Amonra recovery image if i dont want to.

I downloaded Unrevoked 3.21 and when I run the software there is a setting which says
"Disable Security On Phone.." and it is already checked for me.

Before I root my device do I need to uncheck this option? sorry if this sounds silly but I just wanted to clarify.

Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't have to change anything.

If It's for s-off, it will just fail with unsupported radio error. Not sure if that's what that does though

turn off that option.

Truthfully I dont know what it means, but if its s-off, its only for cdma and if it fails with that error, you need to try again and set that option off, but I dont know.

I've finally rooted my phone! I admit i was nervous :D

I unchecked "Disable security on phone" since I am using a GSM handset. I didn't get any errors.

The Unrevoked version I used was 3.21. I read that 3.32 can cause issues.

I haven't installed a custom ROM yet since I haven't made a nandriod backup and applications backup.

Besides CyanogenMod 7 which roms do you personally recommend and why?

Thanks

Great, regarding flashing a ROM I currently have the following radio version:

H-BOOT-0.93.0001
Radio: 0-5.11.05.27
Bravo PVT4 SHIP S-ON

If i do the following(flashing a ROM for the very first time here):

  • Backup/Restore > Backup
  • Wipe Data/Factory Reset
  • Wipe Cache partition
  • Flash custom ROM
If I flash a rom is the current Radio removed?

Thanks,

Thanks!

i made the nandriod backup(using clockworkmod recovery menu) and apps backup(using titantium)

I just installed the latest version of CM7 to try out. All seems well.

I installed the GoogleApps package but I panicked because I couldnt see it in my app draw.

But then I opened up GoogleMarket and I downloaded the apps.

Hi,
sorry but this does not root my desire. I would appreciate any assistance as I have read, and tried many options unsucessully to date.
Details of my desire are as follows:
From software info.
Android version 2.2
Baseband version 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernal version 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0 htc kernel@and18-2 #1
Build Number 2.14.207.3.cl274424 release-keys
software number 2.14.207.3
Browser version webkit 3.1

BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT 0.93.0001
MICROP-0514
TOUCH PANEL - SYNT0101
RADIO 5.11.05.27
Aug 10 2010,17

It is an o2 supplied desire.

As the erase size is 40,000 I have tried the following

unrevoked (3.32 and 3.21) standard images and also amon ra 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 via unrevoked.

Would appreciate any help. I'll apologise if I have missed anything but I dont think I have. My only defence is that I am a newbie.

Any error message?

Have you made any modifications that subvert the way the operating system should work?

Have you tried a factory reset?

Have you got enough space on the phone?

Details... Details...

Added some words for Usta:
AlphaRev 1.8 (Sometimes S-OFF has been known to fail on some (AOSP) roms. If this happens, take a backup and flash a rooted stock sense rom.)

Same issue as zaphodbeeb. Similar specification (PVT4, erasesize 40000, hboot 0.93.0001 etc) and I have tried for months to root, reading every forum entry possible with no luck. Keeps coming back to trying different version of unrevoked, which in turn have led to different error messages (hardware to new, cannot find misc). Have now tried unrevoked 3.21, 3.22, 3.32 with either amonra 2.0.0, 2.0.1 or cwmr 2.5.1.3; have used a Mac, Windows and Slax Linux, all with no joy. Have even gone as far as removing Dropbox as apparently that has caused issues elsewhere.
No modifications made to phone.
If there are any other thoughts, they would be gratefully received.

Did you do the "force all apps to SD" to SD trick? If so, you need to undo this.

Try a factory reset. If that fails, try downgrading your ROM using Teppic74's downgrade tool

This is all in the first post

The link to the Goldcard tool doesn't work. Is there another link to it somewhere?

Also, I'm new to rooting and on Virgin Mobile in the UK. Can I return it to stock if something goes wrong?

Thanks!

I'll update the link but its also in the useful downloads link in my signature

Fixed the goldcard tool link. Its because I added all my dropbox tools to .rar archives instead of having folders containing .exes

All sorted.

Nice post but are you able to define some of the terms such as flashing and gold card? its very difficult to know what these words mean and googling the terms doesn't lead to many successful results. Please define them in laymans terms for inexperienced users such as myself!
