Fascinate vs Droid X

Right.

Be aware though....iOS offers ZERO lag. Like, i mean truly ZERO. (most of the time).

Even the X will not be quite as smooth as iOS.

**Not a fanboy, just being honest**

Yeah I know. My 3G had no lag ever doing anything. I'm wondering how Apple does it. Possibly by making their hardware and software work together from the getgo. I wish Android would get to that point and after playing with the X for so long, I have hopes it will or get damn close. I only had a few times of lag on my 3G. Eris made me want to kill my phone. So do you know anything more about the LTE's and Verizon's announcement tomorrow?

Android is almost there. I firmly believe that within the next 12 months, it will be VERY much like iOS (with smoothness).

i have the fascinate and the droid x and in my experience, there is NO comparison as far as lag. there are times that the fascinate will just sit there for a few seconds while you are pressing buttons and nothing happens. i also have a samsung vibrant on tmobile which exhibits the same behavior.... i'm not saying it happens all the time or a lot but it does happen. it also depends on if you're using live wallpapers or widgets as they tend to slow any phone down. the fascinate and droid x are both really good phones, it pretty much depends on which you like more or which has less 'issues' that you can deal with.

Exactly! Good example. Appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm going to try and play with the phones in the Verizon store later this week but I think I'm going to go with the X. What you guys are describing is minor and I know it won't happen all the time but I perfer to minimize that problem as close to 0 as possible. I hate my Eris becasue of it so I'm going to go for the X most likely. Will have to see what happens when I test out phones. What I don't get it, if the Samsung has a better processor and a GPU why is it laggier even by a bit?

2.2 is going to run smoother due to several items that impact it.

The X runs 2.2, the Fascinate runs 2.1

Honestly, it could be as simple as the native task manager built into Froyo. But i know that 2.2 better utilizes RAM than 2.1.

Many things actually, chief among them is the filesystem. Its what those lag fixes attempt to address to varying degrees of success

Yeah but when I played with the Droid X, it was running 2.1. I did so much stuff on it and it didn't even hiccup. I ran live wallpapers, 3 apps and had people call me. All responsive at the touch of the screen. My Eris would've died or exploded a that time.

it's not always the processor at fault. i have an HTC mytouch 3g slide on tmobile, 600M processor and that thing has zero lag and is very fast even though it's running sense. granted the screen is smaller than 4" but it's still a good example.

I had an X for 29 days and traded it in for a Fascinate. Not to confuse you, but I don't regret my choice BECAUSE of the LACK of lag that I've experienced on the SF. I've made a point of comparing tasks on both the SF and DX and the SF always won. Not only is the processor and GPU better, but the bootloader isn't locked on the SF. Overclocking has already started, and development for the SF is moving rapidly. In my honest opinion, you'll have a much smoother, faster, and happier experience with the SF. I must include that I have only experienced 2.1 on the DX.. but 2.2 will also follow on the Fascinate, so you have to remember that you must compare them once their operating systems are on the same level.

I have both and the X is the smoother phone. If you hate lag then wait to you have to wait 10 minutes for the GPS to lock on if it locks on at all on the Fascinate. I have found the Fascinate to lag pretty bad when multitasking. Those that say that the CPU is better on the Fascinate are wrong. If anything they are equal but I would give the nod to the CPU in the X if I had to pick which is better. The GPU on the Fascinate is better but I have yet to come across anything where it would matter. There is a good chance that when the Fascinate gets 2.2 the issues will be gone but even then I would still pick the X over it.

Hey! i can see it happening! lol

off topic, but how do you edit a post? i meant to put quotes around my last post but can't find an edit option anywhere. thanks

You can only edit your own posts and then you just hit the edit button. I wonder if you mean quote in which case you hit the quote button. Pretty easy either way

My 2 cents...

Next time in store, be sure to reboot anything you use for a more even playing field.

Also, for ZERO lag - iPhone.

I ran both phones side by side. They both lagged noticeably stock. And I noticed that switching app screens in the app drawer and switching home screens was also laggy on both phones when using live wallpapers. It was less laggy on the Fascinate when NOT using live wallpapers, though.

I rooted both phones, removed what bloat I could, and installed Launcher Pro and AutoKiller. ZERO lag on both phones, even with a few apps open. Switching home screens was liquid. Navigating the app draw was smooth as silk. Everything loaded instantly. Web browsing was blazing fast.

I had a similar experience on my sister's Fascinate after rooting and doing the same process to hers. I honestly believe that if either phone lags, you need to tweak it some more. Both the DX and Fascinate I used had 2.1. My Fascinate continues to have 2.1, and continues to perform smoothly. Lag happens once in a blue moon, as in once every two or three days when I have a ton of stuff open - specifically, games. But that happened as well for me on the DX.

What makes me the most happy is that I don't have to reset either phone all the time. The Eris needed a reboot three or four times PER DAY. I restart the Fascinate only when installing something that needs a reset, tweaking/experimenting, or doing a major update to something like AutoKiller or Launcher pro. It was the same with the DX.

To those that own the SF, do you upgrade your phones pretty often (every half a year to a year), or do you keep them for 2+ years? The thing that scares me most is the longevity of Samsung's support for their phones and untimely updates for fixes (lag, GPS, mic quality).

Im a 2 year guy myself or at least I had my last phone since December of 2008 before I got the SF. Many are worried based on Samsung's past history. But the fact that the hardware was so attractive and the fact that the Galaxy S is on all carriers suggests to me this will be well supported in the future. While Froyo is not coming quickly enough for me, it is coming. The SF is pretty darn good as is. My GPS is fine, no other major complaints.

Anand's review is out on the fascinate:

Samsung Fascinate Review: Verizon's Galaxy S Smartphone - AnandTech :: Your Source for Hardware Analysis and News

Not the best or most in-depth I've seen them do on a cellphone, but it's not bad. Those with GPS issues will want to take note, as they have definitely gone in-depth on the GPS, and in more detailed testing found that it simply does not have as strong a GPS signal as other smartphones do. When other smartphones pick up 10 satellites, the Fascinate only picks up 9. When others pick up 7, the Fascinate picks up 6. Basically, it regularly finds one less satellite than the competition.

It's funny that he disabled the Verizon GPS services and it locked on in mere seconds for an entire day. He thought that he'd solved the issue. The next day when he went to show off his discovery, it had the same lag delay!!

Oopsies.

Through reading these forums and others, that anomaly isn't unique to just his phone. It seems sometimes people will have terrible GPS use, and then suddenly it starts working perfectly, or the opposite happens with someone who normally had great GPS. For others, they apply a fix that seems to work right away, and then later it no longer works. Since all satellites do is send a string of text, it makes you wonder wth Samsung did.. the inconsistencies in the GPS doesn't seem like a hardware issue.. so is it possible their software has different conflicting variables?

Well, I have an extra bum line on my plan. I normally want two years out of my phone. The reasons there have been so many exceptions for me lately are the following:

1. The Samsung Omnia
2. The Droid Eris

Allow me to explain. The Omnia wasn't for me. It was going to be for my wife. She's the one that is responsible for our family getting contracted into a data plan in the first place! She had to have a windows mobile phone in order to do instant loan applications and get signatures.

She hated it. I did lots of stuff to try and make it better/faster. She still hated it. Therefore, I ended up with it. I was excited at first, because I was a casual (and largely satisfied) windows mobile user from back in the Compaq iPaq ... oops, I mean Ipaq days. Compaq's support was awesome on those things back then. I bought a newer HP Ipaq with bluetooth and wifi after the merger, and HP was still awesome on supporting it for me. I had problems, they sent me replacement parts. The software update department was lacking, but I didn't know whether to blame HP or Windows because other brands had similar issues.

Anyways, the Omnia was my first time depending on a Windows Mobile device not only as a PDA but also as a phone. In short, it SUCKED. If I could always use the pen to make calls and answer calls and text it would be fine, but how do you do that when you're holding a baby or a bag of groceries??? I'm a DAD you know. I quickly learned why my wife completely loathed the thing. What a piece of CRAP.

So I heard all these rave reviews about android, and they had the Eris on special for free after rebate. About five of my friends had just got theirs and thought they were awesome. It was slim, attractive, had a nice screen, and it was certainly fluid and easy to use. So I jumped on the bandwagon with my co-workers.

The Eris is a great phone. For about two days. I don't want to make this post any longer than it already ridiculously is, but I used my primary line to upgrade to the Omnia because of its new every two. When it sucked, I used my secondary line to get the Eris. When it also sucked, I had to use my wife's line who just came due for an upgrade to the Droid X (which I traded for this Fascinate). I gave my wife the LG VX8700 that used to be my primary. Awesome phone. She is loving that phone, and I am loving my Fascinate.

We finally have phones that we love. I would say most people that love their phones to pieces will tend to keep them longer than the ones that get phones they hate, logically. But who knows. I know some people want to be on the cutting edge all the time. I'm kind of right in between. I like to buy the latest and greatest when I do buy, but I don't mind spending a little to get stuff that will last. Just ask Saps, as he's a buddy from HardForums where we custom build most of our own PCs.

Anyways. I have no idea why I wrote you a book to answer a simple query. Sorry about that!

Well, knock on wood, but this hasn't happened to me yet. It's been very reliable every time I've needed it. And I didn't do that update that came out either ...

I had to to grab coffee before reading your essay reply :p jk

I've only had 2 phones..
Moto Razr: had its quirks.. but it was a sturdy phone that made calls and sent texts well enough
and currently the LG Chocolate 2: has been a decent enough phone until the past maybe 5 months(?) where the signal quality has been abysmal at best where I live (partly due to living a valley and them now having added tall buildings at the top of the hills between me and the cell tower).

I'm sure whichever phone I get next will be vastly superior to either of those.. but I just need to find one that I'll be entirely happy having gotten. I also wish I knew what Verizon's pricing plans are to be with LTE so I know whether it's best to get a new phone now, and be grandfathered in for a long while with unlimited data, or to wait until LTE is out and get a phone that supports it.

P.S. HardForums and XtremeSystems seem to often have bad blood. Perhaps I should consider you an enemy here!
