Root Favorite Root Applications

What are the most handy and most useful to you? I'm new to rooted apps, and would like to understand what you all think about them and what you would recommend!
 
Well I must say, I do like most of my favorite root apps. :D

Lol, but let me put it to you the way I think you meant... there are the MUST HAVE apps once you root that you just can't do without like 'Titanium Back-Up', 'Root Explorer', 'AutoKiller', 'SetCPU', 'Hot Reboot', 'AdFree Android', 'Wireless Tether', etc... But if you want to know some cool ones I've found since getting all the usual suspects here's a little list for ya...

Drocap2 - lets you take pictures of your screen. There are other ways to do this, but this app is an absolute breeze to use. You just have to time it right so you don't get the little 'Superuser access granted to Drocap2' banner at the bottom of your screen in the picture. A little practice and you'll get it.

TeslaLED - turns your phone into a strobe light via the LED (duh). The coolest thing about it? You can set the speed of the strobe. Cool party app.

LCD Density Changer - lets you set the resolution of your screen much like you can on your LDC bigscreen TV. I set mine at 200 and it spaces things out on the screen nicely. Don't bother if you have poor eye sight, although I think it allows you to bump down the resolution as well, but not forsure on that one. But I really like the way this app makes my screen look!

Webkey - this app allows you to pull your phone up on your computer screen wirelessly. It's so cool, it's all realtime. Everything you do on your phone, happens on your computer screen at the same time. And it's a port so you can use your computer keyboard to type stuff on your phone as well if you so chose. Which makes for writing out long notes and what not a real breeze. Super cool app!

Search2Play - turns your camera button into a play/pause button for your music player. This came in SOOOO handy for me because I like to listen to my music while riding my motorcycle. But when I had my helmet on and someone would say something to me, I would have to either pull my helmet off and remove my earbuds, or unzip my coat, pull the phone out, wake it up, unlock it, open the music player, and then pause it... simply hitting the camera button through my jacket is such an incredible time saver it really made listening to music on the bike a whole lot more enjoyable.

AdjBrightness - is a screen dimmer. Already have one you say? Ah yes well this one goes at least twice as dim as your stock dimmer. Which is useless unless you do a lot of playing around on your phone at night when all the lights are turned off. Then it makes it a lot easier on your eyes. And saves battery life while it's at it!

Boot Animation Changer - there are some cool animations to choose from in the free version, the donate version has a lot more. Pretty sweet if you're interested in changing your boot animation.

Hope this helps. I think this is kind of what you were looking for, no? I know there are tons more of cool apps out there for root users. Keep your eye on the thread in the link above. Most of the cool ones make it into that thread sooner or later. Cheers :)
 
Thanks outlaw. Just downloaded Webkey.. Never heard of it but after playing with it for awhile, it seems awesome. Im going to have to test out search2play as well.

Yeah I really dig Webkey. I tried pulling up the football game I was watching on 'TV Flash' (super cool new beta app, doesn't require root) so I could watch it on the big screen, but it was too choppy unfortunately. Need to figure out what that app was that sent any media on your phone through the HDMI cord to your TV.

Anyways, check the updated list above, I added 'Boot Animation Changer' to it. ;)

That is on the PTA 2.2, I just installed the ApeX Rom and I get just a little bit better life under heavy use but much better life with light use. By heavy use I mean play a game or browsing the web. Both of you are a bit heavier users than I. But yes screen on is the main killer, next to talking on phone with BT and Navigation as best as I can tell.

But not so much, I was thinking you guys were using the DX as a laptop replacement or something. Which is what I do at home and on weekends. I'll grab the DX to look up something and not even boot my computer.
 
OH and I haven't tried this autokiller app. I used to use Automatic task killer right after I got the DX simply because it worked differently than ATK and I don't really believe in task killers on Droid OS. It helped with battery life, but not a whole lot and had issues with navigation.

However, the automatic version did work pretty well and I wonder if in function it acted like this autokiller app.

I do believe the app you are talking about is "Real HDMI". I cant seem to find it on the market at the moment but you might search around for it.

If you've never used autokiller but are rooted, I definitely recommend it. It improved battery life on both my DX and my Fascinate, and helped keep some memory free as well. Totally recommend it.

I looked and looked for it and finally googled it. Turns out Birdman took it off the market about 3 weeks ago (whaaaaa!!!!) because it had a bug in it that froze some phones that he could not work out of the program. So he said he could not in good concious sell an app that freezes peoples phones.

Man that sucks sooo bad because I JUST picked up the HDMI cable last week and have been looking around everywhere for that stinkin app. I should have picked it up way back when I first saw it, but figured I didn't need it until I got the cable.

Do you have it? And have you experienced any freeze ups at all???

I hate when that happens. Before I got this phone I checked amazon deal of the day and lightning deals religiously, once I got this phone I found a widget for each and quit checking their site because it was in my notifications bar. When I did the OTA 2.2 and factory reset I lost the deal of the day one but found the lightening deal still in the market. Then after I put a Rom on my phone I lost that one also and its now gone. Wish I had backed it up. Anyone got the .apk's?

Whats the deal with this app? aside from a strobe light? Is it any brighter than Droidlight?

Are you saying you had 'Real HDMI' and then lost it? Or are you talking about another program that you lost? If you did have it how did you like it? I'm really kicking myself in the ass right now for not getting it sooner. Hell I'm even thinking it may have been free when I first saw it. Why I waited so long to get it is beyond me. I kept thinking if it's in the market then it's a sure thing, pick it up whenever it's convenient for me. I learned my lesson, from now on if I see something that seems interesting I'll download it immediately & come back to it later if I don't happen to need it at that very moment.

The really sad part is I probably would not have shelled out $20 bucks for the cable if I'd known that app was no longer available. So yes if anyone else has it I would be more than willing to donate the $2 bucks it went for to get it from you... if that's even possible? Not sure how that would work?

Nah I doubt it's any brighter. I'll admit there are probably more flashlight apps on the market than anything else. But what set this one apart from the others for me was the fact that it has a customizable strobe light that I personally hadn't seen anywhere else. Which isn't to say it's the only one out there, just the only one I've seen.

That and I really dig the icon! ;)

I had a different program but lost it because I didn't back it up and didn't know it wasn't in the market anymore, but I had planned to get that app to once I got a hdmi cable. I've learned my lesson to, download backup and delete from phoneif you don't need but might later

Whoa, well that's surprising information to say the least. I was sure it was working because I have it set to turn off date when my screen turns off. And sure enough everytime I'm using Wireless Tether and I don't have my phone plugged into the charger (which keeps the screen on) I loose my wireless connection within 10 - 15 seconds.

I had assumed that was BatteryFU doing its job. But if that's not the case does anyone know what else would be causing that to happen? I suppose if it's really not doing anything for me I might as well just delete it, so I do appreciate the info. Just very surprised to hear it's not working.

I guess if I uninstall it and my Wifi still cuts out on me when the phone goes to sleep that will confirm that BatteryFU really wasn't responsible for that after all eh.

What am I missing here? Automatic Task Killer is ATK. Was that a typo?
 
I have a question related to rooting and apps.

Is there a list somewhere I can be pointed to that has all of the bloatware that came installed on the DX? It only dawned on me recently that I was so thrilled after getting TI that I could remove them that I neglected to back any of them up first. I plan on doing the OTA upgrades so am I correct in assuming it won't work without all that junk installed?

Unfortunately there's a good chance the OTA updates won't work if it doesn't find some of the factory things it expects to find. Who knows what checks they'll put in the next OTA ...

As far as bloat, I got rid of blockbuster, NFS shift, and CityID. The main one you want to get rid of is CityID. What a cumbersome piece of spyware that is ... It is preying big time on uneducated users new to android.

I snagged the complete list off DroidXForums for ya, courtesy of taypotts:

Skype
MyVerizon
CarDock
Kindle
Blockbuster
NFS
Mobile Hotspot
Verizon Visual Voicemail (if you remove this it WILL disable the Voicemail button on your dialer)
HelpCenter

I've heard that removing MyVerizon and Mobile Hotspot could potentially cause issues, and removing Visual Voicemail will disable that button, as mentioned. I just used AutoStart Killer (same maker as autokiller) to keep it from booting every time the phone comes on. I also use Kindle, Skype, and Amazon MP3. The Cardock and HelpCenter never bugged me much. If you use a 3rd party launcher you can hide them anyways.

Oh, as an aside, even though I use skype, I also use autokiller to kill it when my phone first boots. Even though I use those apps, I want them to be on demand, not running all the time!

That's usually the case. I guess it would be rather hard for you to know what all you uninstalled since you probably didn't like, make a list or anything I pressume? I also figure you didn't do a back-up of your phone before throwing everything overboard. When I get home I will see if I can make a list for you of everything that comes with the phone. All I did was freeze all my unwanted bloat as I figured it wwould be infinitely easier to go in and unfreeze it just before doing an OTA update then try to find all that garbage and reinstall it over again.

If nobody has pointed you in the right direction by then that is. The other issue is, I really don't know if I got all the bloat or not? You may have erased more than I froze. Which woukd leave you still needing a list.
 
No I sadly did not make a list. However I also know I only removed pretty obvious things. Definitely Amazon MP3, Kindle, Skype and Blockbuster. But I feel like there were a couple more. Those are all things that can be found in the market though if I recall. I definitely did not remove any processes that would be un needed/wanted such as social network or android live wallpaper.

And no I backed it up before I did anything else after that. A little backwards I know, but rooting and all things akin are pretty new to me. But yes if you have such a list that would be incredibly helpful.
