Too bad that it doesn't actually allow you to adjust the brightness... oh well maybe someday...Root and download "adjbrightness" from the market. bob's your uncle.
I found a better solution: Keyboard Backlight Controller

Make sure if you use task killers (you shouldn't but that's another topic), that you don't kill it.
The advantage of this method, is it auto-starts with the phone. I had issues with adjbrightness not running at startup. Seems simpler to use as well.
i don't get the advantage, i only turn it off when watching movies.
This option is also available in both CM7 and MIUI natively.
I gave up looking. Where is the option for this?
Settings - CM settings - Display - Auto backlight - Use custom - Edit other levels - zero out all fields in the buttons column.
does anyone know how to do the same thing but with the stupid home menu and back keys that motorola thought would be a wonderful add to the droid razr m. i have eye issues n the lights hurt my eyes. i was able to find apps to change the background from back to white which is another fault of theirs and a screen filter but it doesnt work on the home buttons. any suggestions cause im going blind here lol. also is there an option to do this with out rooting the phone. this is my first smart phone so when it comes to that im pretty much dumber then a box of rocks. the easier the better.
