Root Finally Rooted, now what?

I finally took the plunge last night & rooted my phone. Everything seems to have worked fine, so I now want to move on to flashing a custom ROM. I was wondering what I need to do beforehand though. I've heard about making a Goldcard, but is that too late since i've already rooted? And if not I heard you only need a goldcard if there isn't a stock ROM of your branded desire, is there a list anywhere I could check?

I've heard about doing a nandroid back up and backing up using titanium. Is one better than the other or should I be doing both? Sorry for all the questions guys but I want to make sure I get everything right. Thanks.

you should always have a gold card for recovery purposes if everything fails

you can create one as long as your phone is bootable

Have a read through THIS THREAD. The OP was in a similar position to you and you can follow his progress, some good info and advice in there, and also read the guides in danfrance's signature.

Put the desire z rom on it with A2SD+ flawless and camera is working fine - 720p but apart from that it amazing!

Thanks Chris Ed I've been looking through that thread you linked and it's very helpful. I noticed though that the fella havin trouble said he was backing up via ClockworkMod Recovery. How do I get into that again? I know how to start the phone by holding down power & vol down but my only options are...
