Help Finally tried "Handcent SMS" and I LOVE it!

I keep going back to stock, but end up going back to handcent because of the popup and reminders. And every update there's always something different that worked right before but is now broken. This time it was this. I want to donate a few bucks, but I'm waiting till I know I want to keep it for good.

Need a little help guys. This is driving me nuts actually. I tried Handcent and kind of liked it, but ended up uninstalling it after I missed some SMS and read here that others had that trouble. I also could not figure out how to disable the pop-up. I did not like it as it got in the way when I was doing something else on the phone. I tried all the options, but still got a pop-up.

Now that I've uninstalled I still see it when I get a message. Any ideas? Perhaps the pop-up is coming from another app? I have Missed Call installed, but only configured it for calls. Did not configure SMS there yet. I also have Google Voice installed, but don't see any options for pop-ups there. I only have the stock SMS app now. I get a pop-up each time I get a message now. Thankfully not when the screen is locked at least. Just to be clear, my pop-up has the following:

Sender Name

message text

[auto response with busy message]
[reply][dismiss]

Is this the Handcent pop-up? Like I said I uninstalled Handcent so that would be really weird. How do I get rid of it?

Thanks,
John

that's exactly what mine looks like. I know there's some other SMS popup apps... check the "my downloads" section in the market to make sure you didn't download one and forgot about it perhaps? I don't think there's any popup feature in the default app... although you're in a moment forum, so we only know Cupcake here lol... maybe Eclair has a default popup?

Man, I wish I could help you, but I don't recognize that message, and i don't know how to turn it off..
The only thing I can think of is going into "Messaging". Click Menu- Settings. Once there, click on Menu again, and that will give an option to "restore default settings"... Maybe that will help?

Thanks guys. I'll give that a try. It's just annoying. Nothing major, just bugging me that I can't figure it out. Didn't realize I was in a Moment forum. Just found this thread via google 'handcent popup".

Found the culprit! I googled for the longer button text in quotes and found "[auto response with busy message" pointing to an app that I tried out called Contacts Blast. I forgot I even installed it. Now I'm off to uninstall or at least turn off the window.

Contacts Blast – New Features Droidmatic

The app is kind of neat, BTW. Has some cool features including being able to send mail to a google mail group easily.

Settings/Applications/Manage Applications & choose what u need from there...(Or, if & when u get the popup asking for default, of course u just choose correctly then)

Has anyone else noticed that handcent doesn't recognize numbers and display caller ID for any number that's stored with the period (.) as the separator? I have a bunch of numbers stored like that from back when I thought I was cool and european and formatted my phone numbers as such (I was such a weird kid... and probably still am lol). What's doubly annoying is that the stock messaging app recognizes them just fine. I'd assume that the dialer caller ID does as well (although I still have to test this). I think I'm going to email the developer and ask them if they can fix that, unless there's a setting I'm missing.

This is also in the sticky FAQ. Just beating a dead horse here folks... move along :)

The handcent sms is in there but it is informational only, no option to choose it by default to use, just asks to uninstall, force stop and clear cache, as far as the faq, I read thru it before posting and it was not addressed.

To my knowledge, there is no specific way yet for users to register with the OS a default app. One way to handle this is to disable notifications in the Android Messaging app (how: open app and modify settings to disable notifications), and stop using the app. Make sure notifications is enabled on Handcent SMS.

thanks a million, it worked

Sorry if this has been asked already but is there a way to forward a text from Handcent or even the default SMS?

No one else has noticed that this program has become increasingly laggy with recent updates? Sometimes it starts right up when I select it from notifications, but more often than not there's a couple of second delay. I switched over to Chomp which has virtually the same features but doesn't seem to have the same lag problem (yet?). And this is not an exclusive Moment issue, I've seen similar complaints in the Droid section.

In Handcent, click and hold on a message and a menu will pop-up which includes a Forward option.

Default SMS is the same thing. I tried Handcent but couldn't get it to look even similar to the stock app which I really like the look of. Also didn't see any features that I needed over the stock application other than the popup which SMS Popup took care of for me along with persistent notifications and custom vibrate settings.
