Root Finding a good Rom?

marsui

Newbie
I read the following root guide:

this forum: 395962-rooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition

Which linked me to this poll:

this forum: 284413-roms-kernels-download-page

After researching, I decided to go with an AOSP rom instead of a sense rom with the goal of having as little bloatware as possible, and to extend my battery life. I'm also tired of sense crashing all the time and fighting with the limited 512mb of internal memory the EVO has.

Is that poll post the best list of custom roms available and are the poll results the best gauge of finding the most liked rom?

I saw MikG 2.58 had the most votes for sense roms and CyanogenMod-7.1 had the most votes for AOSP roms.

I went with CyanogenMod-7.1 and used the latest Tiamat kernel (non-sbc).

Is that poll outdated? Is there a better list of Roms on these forums somewhere? The battery life is great on CM7, it has crashed once or twice since I installed - but right now my biggest issue is Bluetooth audio streaming is not working well. Before Root, I used to stream pandora and other online radio services to my car stereo through bluetooth - without any problems. After rooting and installing CM7 I get constants skips when doing the same thing. I did some googling and I found similar complaints but no fixes - so I want to try another AOSP rom.

Any suggestions as to how to find the right Rom for my needs? Links to other posts perhaps?

Thanks

I know you said you dont want a sense rom, but MikG V3.0 is pretty Rock Solid. Sense never crashes on my EVO. I run CM9 on my HP touchpad and like it as well, but for my EVO, MikG 3.0 is pretty much perfect. You can customize until you heart is content, or just leave it stock after install. I use my EVO pretty hard, as I travel allot, so I use the GPS, tether to my Tab/Laptop, allot of texts, email, ect and never a crash on 3.0.

moved you to the rooting section.

yes the poll itself is a little outdated. the op does need a little updating, but the roms are pretty much all there.

I don't have anything bluetooth so I cannot comment on that. However I can say that Xplod and Decks are probably what you want with AOSP. I'm More for Xplod and Mizzou is the Deck guy.

General Consensus for Sense is MikG

I don't have anything against sense, I had thought maybe an AOSP rom would be more stripped down than using sense - or maybe the AOSP ui used less resources. I will probably give MikG a try - the bluetooth streaming is very important to me. I can use a wired adapter - but I always notice a quality drop versus using a bluetooth connection.

@ocnbrze - I apologize, I could have sworn I posted this in the rooting forum!

This is my first time rooting and to me its very confusing to figure out what rom best suits your needs. Does anyone know of a place that has a summary/comparison of the more popular roms? Googling takes me all over the place. This forum seems to have the best info overall.

Thanks again for all your responses =)

Edit: One more thing - do you think the kernel I chose would have any affect on how the bluetooth streaming works? I believe its called A2DP. I could just try different kernels, I immediately went to Tiamat, I don't even know what CM7 comes with lol.

Tommy's classic is where it is for me as well. I'm on MikG 3.1 till Tommy's next release comes out. Classic EVO is so lightweight it kicks ass with battery life. My best is 3.5 days with my normal use (most would probably consider it light use) and the stock battery.

I've never experienced more than a day of use with my battery - I think its due to the fact that I ride the train to work and am usually streaming netflix or hulu plus for about 1.5 hours every day. That seems to drain the battery a lot. I wish I could find a rom that was good for someone who watches a lot of video.

To be perfectly honest, I'm almost always near a charging source so I really only need battery life when I'm out and not watching videos but want my phone to not die so quick.
