Root First compcache rom?

Wow that's wierd. Maybe its not shielded well or something. I need to get 3 or 4 more cables too. Anyone out there found one that works ok?

it is strange, as you would think micro usb would be pretty much the same as all pins are there.
it works for charging and data transfer but as soon as i do things adb or fast boot related it promptly tells me to f off

Just got back to see they released the final version. ARGH! I cant install it till later, expecting some calls :(

Ok.

This might be a completely nub question but:

HOW ON EARTH DO YOU DOWNLOAD THE RECOVERY 4.1 ZIP FROM THAT GODFORSAKEN 2shared - file upload SITE THAT THE ITALIANS ARE USING?!?

There doesn't seem to be any 'Click to download' type link - just a page full of dodgy links for bloody William Hill or something.

Tried it in Firefox, no joy.

Tried it in IE, no joy.

Allowed popups, got another four windows opening with crap in them, but certainly no downloads.

Gah!

Help?

So there is.

Cheers Kam.

They could've made it a bit mor f**king obvious if you ask me! Like linking the ma-hoo-sive blue text at the top of the page that says 'Download <file>'.

Smeggers.

Is anyone running with SD swap? How large a swap partition are you using?

[Its updating to the final... yay!]

Getting a class 6 canrd tommorow. Will probably make a 128MB partition to see what happens :D

Edit: I'm guessing the regular stock ROM is faster than the hero themed one?

I was using ~200mb before, seemed ok, but let me know how it goes for you.

The Hero rom is actually faster than stock! The Galaxo lite is probably even faster still. Its because of things like compcache that keep alot of memory free for the main core processes. Also (havnt checked yet) I think they have changed the priority of various core processes using renice to make them alot more responsive eg keyboard.

EDIT: Hmm in galaxo conf compcache is actually off. So all this speed up is from renice! Wow, well done guys!

Well, I installed the new NPS software, updated to II5 with Odin, and flashed the 4.1 recovery image. Took about fifteen minutes all in.

Now I just need to decide between the Galaxo and GalaxHero ROMs. Anyone got any thoughts, or just try both and see? How speedy is the GalaxHero ROM anyway?

Some memory values with various swaps :)

Just to clarify for those that don't understand... [because i know someone will ask :P]

Memory is used first for most active programs. [Fastest 'memory']
Compcache is used second or to swap out programs not used recently. [Medium 'memory']
SD Swap is used last to swap from compcache to sdcard. [Slow 'memory']

So in simple terms, programs are put into memory, and if they're not used for a while, the RAM they use gets compresssed to free up more ram for programs that are in use. Finally if those programs arent used for an even longer time their memory gets written to SD card.

You need to turn on compcache from the GalaxoConf program, and to enable SD swap you need to have an external SD card and create a swap partition as your SECOND partition.

Use GalaxoHero. Its pretty and fast! If you really want to squeeze out the most performance at the cost of looks then use the lite version. The Hero one is plenty usable. I'm actually very impressed by their renice values.

im running galaxhero with swap enabled on class 6 card (created using 0.41 recovery)
seems very fast, i thought compcache should be on by default but as you noticed its not and its using renice. could this be a coding glitch and off = on with off = on?

just a thought

when i use the widget to look at system memory its just under 1gig
loving this so far

Nope not a coding glitch. I checked with free, and /proc, its definatly off by default. I'm guessing its because most people don't run that many apps/widgets so they dont need to take the performance hit of compcache. You can run free and cat /proc/ramzswap to check the status of it.

renice changes system process priorities, so its not related to cacheing. But its just amazing how much faster they make the phone feel by upping core process priorities.

BTW if u mean the internal memory widget, thats storage space and not RAM. Badly worded widget name!

BTW if u mean the internal memory widget, thats storage space and not RAM. Badly worded widget name!

theres two widgets and if its storage space then its completely wrong as i have only used 1.5 gig of internal drive space and no drive space on the sd card other than swap space

Remember the internal SD card is split into 1GB for apps, and 7GB for your own stuff. The Internal Memory Widget shows you how much of that 1GB you have free. I.e. how much more space you have to install apps.

The SD card widget shows you how much of your SD card is used/free.

Its really confusing because of the names! If you want to see how much ram is available adb shell into your phone and type 'free' you'll see the actual RAM available (including swap).

Damn things doesn't get passes the Android screen when flashed. ._.

Did a fresh II5 flash and im using the 4.1 recovery image.

There's some wierd bug if you don't backup/restore g.apps each time. Also are you sure you copied the new rectools too? Does your recovery show 4.1 or 4.0.1 ?

If you already have I5 on your phone just do this (its the easiest way, maybe not the fastest!)

- Mount the internal SD card to the PC. Copy update.zip and the rectools.tar.gz from the 4.1 recovery zip to the internal SD (If you don't have a working OS then Boot into recovery, factory reset and reboot first)

- type fastboot recovery recovery.img (with the 4.1 recovery in the same folder of course)
- Power off, or just pull the battery and boot into fastboot (call + hangup), Recovery will flash

Boot into recovery (volume down, call, hangup).

- Backup G.apps
- Wipe again (just in case)
- apply update.zip from sdcard
- restore G.apps
- Reboot

Yeah sorry 0.4.1 :) I'm sure its the same bug everyone on hdblog.it is having. If you don't backup the g.apps, apply the update and then restore in one recovery session it hangs.
