Root Flashing Radio - Hesitant

Hmmm, interesting. Read the XDA thread and it sounds like a lot of us Poms are finding 32.48.00.32U_5.10.05.30 the best in terms of signal and battery life. Think I may flash that instead. I presume it's ok to flash an older radio on top of a newer one? (I flashed .49 last night).

I also see that some think that it takes "several bootups or even several days" for a phone to get used to a radio, settle down, and optimise signal and battery life. Surely, that's nonsense - either a radio is better or worse? How can an inanimate object "settle down"?

Settle Down!!! I know it seems like an absurd stupidity to suggest that software needs to "bed in" but I'm afraid I'm with them on this one. I use Linux on my PC's and every fresh install needs to settle down into its new home before any presumptions about performance can be made. Undetected corrupt files that wont crash your machine but slow it down, or auto updates set to long for libs etc all go on in the back ground and take a while for your PC/phone to thrash out.

I would be beware of 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, its a rather battery draining radio. I used it for a week before reverting back to 32.44.00.32u_5.09.05.30_2. I know its all dependent on what you use and that but for me it used more power.:(

Being young and impetuous I flashed the new radio without the back up of a goldcard! Oh I can be soooo naughty. All went well and I want to say immediately that the .27's signal is so much better, having quicker data speeds also, I cant comment on my battery yet, so I'll post again in a few days.

If your original ROM was branded, you should make a goldcard before you flash anything else.

YES SIR! I shall make a goldcard as soon as I can figure out how Windows works! I was flashing from Leedroid 2.2d to 2.2f by the way.

We spend 8 years of our lives sleeping, 3 and a half years standing still in traffic and 2 years eating, how long do we spend waiting while Windows is not responding?

My Windows is optimised. My problem is the insurance company gave me a crappy lapdog for the pay out. B*stards.

I made a goldcard!!! Or at least I tink I did? I have LOST.DIR and .footprint at any rate.

I have been running the new radio as mentioned above for the last few days and have noticed no difference in battery life and vastly improved data coverage. Yey.

Flashed a new radio this morning (32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27) and since then battery seems to be draining pretty fast, is this normal for a new radio at first until it settles in?
Will it improve after a while?

Should mention I also reconditioned the battery this morning after flashing a new rom yesterday so maybe this has something to do with it as well?

I personally use 32.47 radio and find it far better than any of the others. Signal for me on this one is amazing!

Suppose it depends on your location as well though
I just felt like after flashing it the battery went from 100% down to 85% in about 20 mins!
I'll give it a day or two and see how it goes before trying another anyway

after flash the latest version 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 and I lost my S-Off. I can't turn it off again. anyone can help?
did you flash the radio or the entire RUU that this radio belongs too?
you should lose s-off as itsw to do with hboot not radio

im confused

I'm confused as well. What I did was I flash MIUI rom then follow by the latest radio version and I lose the s-off.. also, some other people claim that it nothing to do with radio and the MIUI ROM update but this is really happened on me.

Anyway, I try to s-off again using Unrevoked 3 but no luck. (Off topic - anyone can guide me to s-off on my desire)

*** I get it done. ***

you seem a bit confused, unless you are a cdma desire user unrevoked will not give you s-off
the only thing that will give desire GSM users s-off is Alpharev unless you have an engineering hboot which is extremely rare.

did you use Alpharev to get s-off before?

Im pretty sure you didnt just flash the Radio, reson i say this is because its impossible to miui to flash the hboot part of the phone. there needs to be an adb exploit for it to do this and the process of flashing a custom rom would not instigate this exploit or bypass as there wouldnt be anything adb related running

Im pretty sure you Ran an RUU or a pb99img.zip update
is it possible you ran the program on this thread as it contain information about that same radio?

where did you get the radio from?

Sorry to jump on this thread but I have a quick question regarding flashing a radio using ROM Manager.

So I download the radio Zip file and put it on the root of the SD Card.

From ROM manager do I need to select the "reboot into recovery" option and then flash the radio from there or can I select the "install ROM from SD card" option which takes me to the contents of my SD card, and select the radio zip from there ?

When I installed Leedroid ROM I used the "install ROM from SD Option" and im sure that the phone automatically went into recovery mode before installing the ROM.
If I use this option but select the radio file instead of a ROM im thinking it will work just the same ?

boot to recovery using voldown + power
rom manager is a usefull tool but kinda causes problems.
it uses its own standalone version of clockwork mod and not the one hardflashed to the desire.
it is recommended to use proper recovery as radio flashing can result in unrecoverable bricks if something does go horribly wrong.
remove an element of risk by doing it properly

boot to recovery via voldown+power
navigate to flash zip from sdcard
find the zip
flash
reboot

I will use this method, Thanks.

Hi Rastaman

Whilst looking through the radio thread over on XDA I came across these instructions for flashing a radio that seem more complicated than the instructions you gave me above.

How to flash the radios:

Make sure you have the usb driver installed from the android sdk

  1. Turn your desire off
  2. Hold the back button and turn your desire on
  3. When you are at the white screen, make sure BOOTLOADER is selected and press the power button
  4. Wait a few seconds then press volume down to select RECOVERY and press the power button again
  5. When you are at the screen with the red triangle and the phone, plug in the usb cable
  6. Run the recovery-windows.bat script from modaco r5 root pack
  7. When the recovery menu appears select 'Flash zip from sdcard'
  8. Select the radio zip file and press the trackerball to confirm
  9. Press the trackerball over 'Reboot system now'
  10. When the radio image has finished being written unplug the usb cable
  11. The phone will reboot a couple of times and then return to a normal state with your new radio

Do you know why they are different than simply booting in recovery mode and flashing from Zip ?

I just want to make sure im not missing anything out before I attempt to flash the radio !

Cheers in advance.

Modaco R5 is old.

These instructions are well out of date (Before rooting gave you clockworkmod recovery).

This method is from when rooting used to give you the HTC Engineering recovery, only allowing update.zips to be installed. The windows batch file used to push a recovery to your phone temporarily.

Do what Rastaman said and Trust :)

Oh I trust him.

Just wanted to make sure that their wasn't anything in those (old) instructions that may have been needed and taken for granted that i'd already done, if that makes sense.

Cheers.

Yeah sure.

But its as simple as flashing via recovery. Just ensure you have plenty of power and don't drop it (causing power loss) whilst flashing.

oh also be aware it will look like the flashing hangs for about 15 seconds. this is normal, do not pull the battery
