Root For a new potential rooter, question please

1 can I root from 2.1 directly, if so what updat.zip do I use, and will I lose pinch zoom and media sorting

Will i lose any functions if rooted

you cannot root from 2.1 you have to use an sbf file to go back to 2.0.1 then root. You wont loose any functions all the good roms have all 2.1 functions and more

Well, we are running 2.1 ROMs (just to clarify what OMJ was saying). We have roms coming out now that are based off of the OTA build (ESE81). This ROM is really good and although I haven't been running it long, I can't foresee any kind of stability issues:

It is an ESE81 build but it is themed (it's hard to find compatible themes for the ESE81 based 2.1 ROM), and it has some hacks and tweaks that make it MUCH better than the stock 2.1 OTA ROM.
