I have seen this from many users accross several devices.
What happened to me: I was using my phone and had about 40% battery life left. While combing through the internet and stuffing my face, the phone shutdown. I assumed it was because the 40% was a surface voltage reading.
What I did to try and correct it: I did what I read many times before. Charge the phone compleately before turning it on.
Did it work?: Hell no! After it did it again, this time after starting from around 50%, it shutdown very rudely.
So again I did the same thing, charge the phone compleately before turning it on..
Oh, what happed next: After not learning my lesson and the phone staying at 100% for way too long. Like over a full day. And the phone shutting down at around 80% I looked at better battery monitor widget (it's open source if you want to build it and check out how it works) and found the battery's voltage was dropping but the percentage wasn't.
But it looks like you are presenting a solution???: I am. Well this worked for me. I had my last unexpected shutdown while at home (showed 100%) so I tried to turn on the phone. Got the red battery.
So I plugged it in and waited for about 15 seconds as I needed it to set my alarm before bed. When I woke up my wife stole the plug (just one in the bedroom) and my phone was at 97%.
So far so good. The system seems to have fixed the battery calabration for me.
What do you think fixed it:
I think the starting stat of 0% allowed the system to figure out how much current was nessacery to fill the battery.
