Forced 2.0.1 DROID UPDATE! HOWTO

to clear things up about my picture messageing issue. i have not been able to send a picture sence before and after update. i dont ever receive a error sending the picture, i get a time stamp and everything, just the receiveing party never receive it. same thing happens when they send it back. this is when i try to send the pic to a att custamer. i can send the picture to my self and wife with no promblem.(any verizon customer). i called tech about this and they investagated the traffic between my number and a number i been trying to mms to. after 5 days they report back that they see no errors, case clossed. issue not fixed.

today i thought id try something, i put the phone number in the to field and add @mms.att.net after the number. touched the menue button, add attachment, select a picture. touch send. the receiveing party reports they received the picture. i reguest for them to reply back to the same exact message with a picture attached and they did and i received the picture. let me add that i had my number ported from att to verizon. also my wife has the curv and can send pictures to anyone with no promblem and we did not port her number, she got a new number with the account.

Just drop it into the SD card on the phone. Don't put it into any folders.

Mount the Phone to your computer and then just copy and paste it.

If you were having troubles understanding what the ROOT of your SDCARD take a look at some of these examples...

the ROOT of your c:\ drive is c:\
the ROOT of your d:\ drive is d:\

Root will NOT be a folder, so just drop the update.zip directly into your SD card and NOT into ANY folder.

The 2.0.1 update installed on my phone without a hitch. I didn't notice any lightning quick change in responsiveness, but it may be slightly faster than before. I dislike the new layout of the lock/answer-call screen, but I do like the new look of the power and calendar widgets. And mine also took a bit longer with the red eye on reboot.

I did have the "Downloads" section instead of the "Verizon" section. What I did was hit the back button from the home screen to exit out. [I opened up another app and then held the home button until the recent list showed up.] I went back into the Market, and the tabs reloaded with Verizon's VCast section.

also my wife has the curv and can send pictures to anyone with no promblem and we did not port her number, she got a new number with the account.

My phone number was ported over from Cingular (about 3 years ago, before the name changed to AT&T) and I can send and receive pics just fine. I'm not sure if my time on Verizon has made any difference, but the issue you're encountering may be unique.

got a little worried watching the red eye but it went away and things are running perfect. Will try camera soon.

Best update appears to be the Corporate calendar widget and general speed may be improved.

i tried the update, but it says the installation is aborted due to signatures not being recognized???

Mine's giving me the same error as Campah. I've tried every permutation of installing this thing (Mac, PC, phone, etc.) and it always gives me the error while verifying the existing system (apply_patch_check).

I'm guessing there's something about our phones that's different, however it's not something that is wiped out with a factory reset (tried that too).

Hopefully the OTA update works, if not I guess I'll be taking it back to Verizon (this is my fourth Droid... not terribly impressed if this is Motorola quality control at work).

says signature can't be verified. do i need to wipe the cache first?

try renaming the zip to update take off the .zip

downloaded the update on my computer, Gmailed it to myself, downloaded it on my Droid via the browser, used Astro filemanager to move the file, and followed the instructions.
update was smooth as could be.

My question is this:

How do you know that this is the same update that Verizon will push (has pushed) OTA?

What happens in January when they push the OTA update for 2.1, and you've got a slightly different filesystem layout as the people who waited? Will the 2.1 update apply cleanly, or completely fail?

At that point, you'll be forever stuck in a phase of having to update manually, which may not always be an option.

Unless, Verizon/Motorola/Google provide clean, *full*, firmwares that you can use to completely restore phones.

I honestly don't think any of this will happen. This update is the same as if you would have received it OTA.

I just noticed that the screen shuts off after a moment on the charger. What other surprises are there not mentioned in the update pdf

the download came from google, my system is now 2.01 and I can't imagine any problems.

I had this problem initially. I went to Gmail, then hit menu and clicked Refresh. That got my mail syncing again.

That said, I still think I'm going to to a factory reset on my phone, then just wait for the OTA update.

Let me know if you can factory reset back to 2.0. My guess (and could be wrong) is that this firmware update patched the device so factory resets will go to 2.0.1. Again, let me know how it goes.

I don't like the space it put between the Google search bar and the notification bar now. They also removed the "clear" button that was in the notification bar when you had alerts to acknowledge.

edit: never mind. It wasn't there the first time it booted up, but after I did some more it returned.

Right, but the OTA comes from Verizon. That update.zip may just be an intermediary that was handed off to Verizon, who then modified it for their needs.

I'm not saying it didn't come from a reputable source, I'm just saying it may be different than the OTA one, and you'd never know until the next update arrives and the checksums don't match.

The factory reset is about data and settings...I agree w/you that anyone who does a reset after getting 2.01 (either manually or via download) will still be on 2.01 after the reset. Data/settings deleted, OS not. SW patches (the update patches the existing code) isn't something you can simply reverse...

2.0.1 forced update:

THESE ARE USA VZ ACTIVATED PHONES

download: https://android.clients.google.com/updates/voles/signed-voles-ESD56-from-ESD20.84263456.zip

Rename to update.zip

Copy to you SD card as "update" (as this is already a zip file).

However I recommend checking the file on your SDCard and make sure it is named "Update.zip" and NOT "Update.zip.zip"

Check your windows options, it if appears as just "update" get into windows and fix this.

Power off y0ur DROID, top key, hold it down and then select the menu option to turn it off.

Wait a bit for it to actually power off.

Open the physicial keyboard.

Power back on with this: hold the the X key on the keypad and THEN, OR at the same TIME, next hold the power button (top right button).

When you see a "/!\" symbol, press and hold first vol+, and then hold down the camera button.
Keep holding it down for a bit... maybe 15-20 seconds IIRC...
Alternative, there's reports that you have to do it fast, or do it at the same time.
We simply, and calmly did the vol+, and the did the camera button... 2 seconds or less in the process?

Once the menu shows....
Use the dpad to select the SD UPDATE.ZIP

Wait until the progress bar goes all the way.

When it's done hit the Dpad button, up top it says to hit it to reboot now.

Enjoy the new lockscreen and 2.0.1 goodness after reboot!

Change the "rename to update.zip" to "rename to update" and you will save people alot of trouble. The ".zip" is already on the file.

New member here...I have a Droid activated on PPC...I'm an Apple guy, most of the info here seems to be for updating on a PC...any idea of what the process is for a Mac OS 10.5?

As many people have stated before, it really depends on their view file type extension settings. Not everyone keeps an "out of the box" Operating System. :)
