Former iPhone users.. are you pleased?

I know it may sound trivial, but little things like that really break or make a phone for me.

Overall, I do miss the large screen, superior notifications, robust facebook contact sync, and most importantly Sprint's better network.

it is true that we are all different and think differently..
you are a perfect example .. we are so different...

little things will break a deal... ????

better screen size, superior notifications, most importantly better networks....
but big issues (problems) you can live with??

^MrX8503 is right in the point that Android/HTC's implementation is very 'unpolished' when compared to the iPhone, but the network alone is enough to keep me away from the iPhone...

...after all, it is a phone first.

People have different priorities. For me I'd rather have a more polished phone. All of the hundreds of little things that the iPhone does right adds up.

The screen is bigger, the notifications are better, and Sprint is a better network, but these things aren't good enough or at least the gap isn't large enough for me to outweigh the hundreds of little things on the iPhone that are polished.

I love my EVO but there are some drawbacks. Battery life is pretty bad. To be expected with the beautiful AMOLED screen.
Please post pics of your EVO with an AMOLED screen, otherwise it will be pretty hard to believe you have the only one with this type of screen.

I think the poster is just confused. Also the funny thing is that I think AMOLED are supposed to be more power efficient.

This seems like a pretty active thread, so I'll ask my fellow ex-iphoners if they can do a simple experiment for me and post if it works. I am about 30% ready to jump to Android and the Evo, yet the convenience of iTunes and syncing my apps/podcasts is keeping me back for now. I have a lot of games that I can't find online in the Android store, like PvsZ, Angry Birds, GTA, etc. However, the ability to run flash could push me over quickly. Could someone please go to Marvel.com and see if they can open a free digital comic and see if the experience is pretty cool on the huge Evo screen! When I try opening a comic using my iphone, I get a message to download flash player. If someone tells me this works, that would be enough to push me over the edge!

With the newly released Froyo 2.2 for the HTC EVo, Adobe Flash 10.1 is a dream come true! Finaly full flash, the real deal!

This is what's really getting me. I live in one of the largest cities in the country (Houston) and both my reception and 3G are absurdly bad. Bad to the point that if this is typical I don't know how Sprint has managed to stay in business.

Since I don't want to sound like I do nothing but complain, the phone itself is absolutely amazing. I'm totally in love with Android. Coming from iPhone OS where everything is locked down and sanitized it's a breath of fresh air. Definitely not something I would recommend to my less tech-savvy co-workers who probably would have thrown the phone at a wall by now, but I love it.

I really violently don't want to go back to the iPhone, but I may end up having to if these connectivity issues aren't resolved in the next few weeks. My iPhone is getting 1.5 to 1.8mbps down in the same locations that my Evo is getting .2 to .5mbps. And my cellular reception is pretty horrible where I live, which is only a hundred yards or so off of I-10. Not service I'm willing to continue paying for all around.
I know exactly what you mean. I also lived in Baytown by the racetrack but just recently moved to Texas City. I have been with Sprint for a few years and I have always had really good data speeds that are faster than Verizon actually. But since my recent move, I am getting the exact same symptoms you are describing with my data speeds. According to Sprint I'm in a good coverage area but I honestly think I'm in one of those areas where I'm between towers and getting spotty data coverage. I'm going to keep hounding Sprint untill I get to the bottom of it. I would definetely not switch back to AT&T, this can be resolved if it is brought to Sprint's attention. Which is what i plan to do.

It's very strange, actually. According to Sprint I live in an "excellent coverage area." People in the same building have Sprint phones (not Evos of course) and get full bars at all times. My iPhone had full bars at all times. I'm very close to probably the biggest interstate in the country in one of the biggest cities in the country. It HAS to be blanketed with coverage, there's no way it's not.

I'm really baffled by the reception. I know that my device has issues as it refuses to connect to 4G anywhere, even in the Sprint store. They (the Sprint reps) were at a loss. BestBuy has ordered me another phone so hopefully that will help with the other issues. I'm just afraid 3G and cellular "is what it is."

As for browser speed, I'm not really all that concerned with that. Mainly streaming media. Youtube is unsuable even at low res, and I'm not even able to reliably stream low bitrate MP3s from my Subsonic server. It's pretty bad.
I'm having the same issues with slow data since my recent move. Youtube buffers and plays a couple of seconds then buffers... hardly usable and very aggravating. I'm thinking Sprint will need to fix this asap or I will be demanding a credit on my bill every month for the lack of advertised data services that I am paying extra for.

I tried setting up 2 Google accounts today. And it does sync all email. I know that the 1st account set up is the one that's used for the Market. So, syncing the first account would be a no go unless you set it up NOT to sync.

But, if you set that up, doesn't just the email get synced from the 2nd account? It looked like it didn't sync the Contacts from the 2nd account. Or, did I miss something there?

If not, then your system is a lifesaver.....
This has been confusing for me also. You sign in with your google email account when you first turn on the Evo, but yet when you open the email application your gmail account isn't listed. If you add the same email account to the email application or even a different gmail account, it shows up... this is wierd. Can somebody who is familiar with the email/gmail accounts please give us an explanation to this behavior?? What is the proper way to have your single gmail account setup so that you have your contacts and the emaill app setup properly for just one gmail account???

I gotta say I agree with you on this one. I would never go back to the iPhone but the iPhone version of gmail was lightyears ahead of google's version of their own product. I think google needs to totally revamp the gmail app,..there are times that I can't even click on a link in Android gmail. My suggestion to you is use K9 for you email.
I agree, Google should have their own Gmail implemented in a superior way as opposed to Apple having a superior Gmail implementation on their iPhone. That simply doesn't make sense!!! Boo to Android for letting Apple hold your hand!!!

Two calls in two years? What have you been smoking?

Actually, it happens ALL THE TIME. AT&T retention dept called me today to discuss the issues I've been having. Four minutes into the call it dropped. I hadn't moved an inch. The guy called me back and the first thing he said was, "I know, I know. I'm very sorry."

Basically my calls last four minutes or less.

So actually, very common.

I have three days to decide between the EVO and the iPhone4. Three days.
My hard headed brother has AT&T and more times than not when he calls me or I call him the call drops. It's not my Sprint service dropping the call, my phone always has a good signal and the other thing is this only happens when I talk to AT&T customers. I've come to expect it so I just wait for them to call me back and they always try to play it off like it was my phone/service that dropped the call. LOL We all know the truth.

Decide on the network you feel is best for you then get the best phone phone for you on that network. Different people have different priorities and thankfully I'm please with both my Sprint service and my HTC EVO so I don't have to live with crappy service or a crappy phone :)

Any suggestions? This is something that everyone probably deals with. Is there a spot on the screen that you can touch but doesn't activate anything, just get you out of sleep mode?
I know what you mean. Try changing the time that the display goes to sleep and also use the "home key" instead of touching the screen in a random location. I think HTC and Sprint need to add this issue to their to-do list and make it happen in a future patch/update. But it's not that big a deal to me, I learn to adapt to these minor things.

Wow .. you were right about the live wallpaper causing lag. I was running the aniPet Aquarium and scrolling through the apps page was choppy/laggy as all get go as was the multitouch pinch/expand. Turned it off and talk about a hug difference!

As much as I love the aquarium I think is is going to stay off and I will load it just to impress friends when showing off the EVO. :D

Now I just need to find somewhere to go to find a static background I like.
I use "Aquarium Free" and I have no lag on my EVO. I suspect you have something else running on your phone that is hogging up resources, not leaving enough memory for the live wallpaper. Remove task killer if you have that installed. It's not necessary for android, it's a misconception plus Froyo 2.2 has the ability to manually end tasks.

it is true that we are all different and think differently..
you are a perfect example .. we are so different...

I'm baffled by this ignorance myself. Ignorance meaning ignoring all logical reasoning and making choices in contrary to what most would agree is the "right thing to do". Get used to this behavior we are all surrounded by people who make the oddest of choices and I admit I have family members who are just as stubborn. They spend $120 per month with one work nextel phone and pay $$$ for 3 personal lines on AT&T. One of those personal lines is an iPhone plan, one is a Blackberry data plan and the third is a regular line with no data. So they spend a LOT more on wireless service than they would if they were to switch to Sprint and get 3 line simply everything. I have been trying to reason with them for 2 years now and they are stubborn as a blind ******ed mule. And it getss funnier, they are trying to budget their money and cut corners where they can but a simple switch to a much better and cheaper wireless service is still hard for them to grasp. I did manage to persuade my nephew to get an android phone and he likes it much better than his old iPhone.
^MrX8503 is right in the point that Android/HTC's implementation is very 'unpolished' when compared to the iPhone, but the network alone is enough to keep me away from the iPhone...

Exactly

No need to ridicule somebody for making an honest mistake. Simply point out that he is wrong with his statement and give the correct information so everybody can learn something by reading your constructive post.

I was happy initially with the switch, and I'm still happy. Just a little concerned over the jerkiness after the upgrade to 2.2. I do like the smoothness of the iphone.

What a ludicrous analogy. For someone that is constantly going from silent to ringer, a hardware switch is very convenient. That's the reason you find them on lots of phones. The guy said it's not a deal-breaker. I'm amazed at how sensitive people are if someone states anything negative about their precious phone.

I agree, this is one thing that I didn't realize how much I would use until I had a phone with it. It's great at night or before a quick nap for turning off the ringer.

But what really confuses me is with the iPhone and various Android phones out there, why in the world are people still using a Blackberry?!

Security. The same reason Governments in the Middle East are freaking out. My company has contracts with the government and I believe that they only allow Blackberry for the employees who work with the US Government.

I don't have an evo, but I have a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant). I think there are many things that are better than IOS. My biggest issue is the connectivity between my computer and the phone.

The thing that Android can not compare with the iPhone is this integration. It is so easy. Plug it in an BAM! All my music choices, podcasts, photos, etc.

Now, on my Mac, I can only see my music which I don't care about as much. I really want to be able to just plug and sync my pod casts. Having my phone communicate with my computer so it knows which ones have been listened to, and the new ones are then automatically downloaded. It seems double twist is the best that can be done, and it is not that good.....

That and I can't see any paid apps as I am in China....

I was just starting to have iOS withdrawals when the new iPod touch got revealed. I think I'm getting a 32GB version soon because it will have the beautiful display and none of the problems I would have encountered if I had gone the iPhone 4 route.

My thoughts and experiences.....
I loved my iPhone 3Gs it was an awesome phone...I even bought a iPhone 4 when they came out. Then......a friend bought an HTC EVO. I played around with it and was blown away!
The Evo has a bigger screen and faster processor.
The wireless seems faster as well. I can transfer movies to the EVO much faster then use the kickstand to view them. Also free content on Sprint TV!
I love the Android OS as well it is better than Apple IOS.
The only drawback to the HTC EVO is the battery life. It could be better.
Hope this helps....

Came from AT&T with a 32GB 3gs iPhone.
No comparison. Evo kills it in every way.
Haven't had a single issue with Sprint coverage, either.

Pros:
If you owned an iPhone (any model) before the Evo, you already know the pros.

Cons:
Battery life. Yeah, it sucks.
But what do you expect with the size of that screen? Can't expect to light up a function hall with a birthday candle, now can you? Doesn't matter anyway, it's easily cured with the addition of the Seidio extended battery.

Or just some power management. If you take a few minutes and get to know what you can turn off and dim and what you can do here and there, you will save lots of battery life. I get a day and a half if i need to. But im on it alllll the time so usually only a 12+ hour day on one charge is about what i get.
I dont want that huge battery on mine :(

I like my evo but just 2 quirks, battery and that damn retina display cause its really nice but since they made a new ipod touch I will satisfy myself with that, and its slow as I type this message from my evo. laggy

I got plenty familiar with all the (necessary?) power saving tips two weeks before I even got the Evo, lol.
I just use it a lot every day and the extended battery saves me a ton of charging time.
The Seidio battery, while it does add weight and bulk, is well worth it. It's not like I added a brick to the back of it or anything. I get well over a full day out of it now, whereas before I was scrambling for a charger before lunchtime.
:)

New here.
I was reading this thread and having never owning an Iphone and Evo being my first smartphone. Sprint has been my carrier for years. I used to have AT&T before Cingular bought them out, the original AT&T never dropped calls, when Cingular merged with them the dropped calls began. Went to Sprint never dropped a call or its so rare I don't remember.
With that being said. I'm no Iphone hater, infact I was looking at the Iphone first. I didn't go out and buy the first or second gen, Iphone because usually there are bugs to be worked out. So I waited.

We have to credit Apple and Steve Jobs with one thing. They were the first--as far as I know--who made the touchscreen smartphone. There were other smartphones out there BB being the top. If the Iphone didn't go to market, I wonder how many more years we would have to wait for one.
Leading into the Evo. I'm in the honeymoon stage as well. Just getting used to it, my previous phone is a Samsung Rant, remember when the first slider keyboard hit the market, everyone wanted one and had to have one, then more manufacturers started to make them. And before that the flip or clamshell, then before that the camera. Not mention size, width, height. Small vs large, slim vs thick etc.
Leading into, the screen is all the rage right now, olcd, amolcd.

What will it be next year? A dslr type interchangable lense phone. BTW you can get a magnetic macro lense for the Evo it may work on the Iphone too.

The Evo is my first jump to smart phones after I looked at the Iphone and thought about it, almost willing to switch to AT&T then I heard about the Evo, not because its supposed to be the Iphone killer, there will never be any such thing, but I read the reviews on both, again I never buy anything at launch and I don't really go by media reviews, I read people's reviews, their comments, likes, dislikes, etc just to see the end user pros and cons. And I was convinced.

In my opinion, neither the Evo nor the Iphone is better, the Iphone is for some people, not for others, the Evo for some and not for others. I chose the Evo because Sprint had it, and they were slow in getting a decent smartphone.

My scrolling experience with the Evo is smooth, having not come from previous droid phones, I never new about swype so the Evo kb is decent but any touchscreen kb is a learning curve for me, having come from the Rant with the slider.

I'm still playing with it, so I'll have ti keep experimenting with apps and other features. The rear camera is decent though I'm worried about the lense like everyone else, has anyone come out with a decent fix yet. The front facing camera also decent. So I'm still playing with the android Os.

The Iphone's Os and the Android OS are very similar. One is Unix based the other is Linux based. One is closed source the other open source. One is programmed, tweaked by a team who all work for the same company, the other is programed tweaked by numerous people. Hence the refinement of the one and the almost but there quite yet other.

Think of Iphone Os as the conservative Waspy Os and Android as The 60s flower child, bohemian, ultra liberal , ultra freedom loving hippy.

for the record, Apple was very late to the game in regards to touchscreen phones. Palm was probably the first to create a popular one and was doing it right long before Apple introduced the iphone. You can trace the first touchscreen phone back to IBM's Simon (think it was IBM) which even predates the first Palm phone. Samsung had two generations of full screen color palm phones. Of course there were windows mobile and symbian phones that predate the iphone as well.

If you're going to credit apple, credit them with being the first to take the features from other products and wrapping them up in a user friendly somewhat idiot proof design that used a capacitive touch screen to bring it all together and tie it into their also idiot proof itunes. Also credit them with kicking the industry in its ass and force them to step up to the plate. Don't think any of us can complain there. Now if Palm can get off their butts, and WP7 can launch we should see some nice competition to keep the innovation coming for a few more years.

I do know I was using an on phone app store on my Palm phone long before the iphone was a twinkle in Jobs' eye.

I have never owned an iphone and never will. My friend has one and he couldnt put down my Evo when he was over Friday night. I had to ask for it back a few times. BUT, he still wouldnt admit that it was better than his iphone..

Anyway, the real reason for this post : I only wish that 3rd partys would put more development into making their devices compatible with Android. My new Pioneer headunit has a special screen just for iphone/ipod. I bought a used 30gb Ipod Classic on ebay (didnt want to give Apple my money) just so I could fully use my new $1,300 headunit!! Hopefully one day in the near future, other companys will see that they should also develop for Android. Android just has to be compatible from phone to phone. It is easy for them to develeop stuff for one device (iphone/ipod), but I guess they see it as developing for Android is developing for a LOT of devices, and wont work.

I switched from iPhone to EVO two days ago and here are some features that I am missing. Maybe there is a way to get these but I just don't know enough about Android to figure these out.

a) No backup feature exists. With iPhone, I could restore all my apps and settings including security certificates back. Nothing like that in EVO.

b) Calendar does not show appointments and brief description of appointment on the same page. In iPhone, the calendar page showed both so I could quickly tap on each day of the month to see the future appointments. With EVO, I have to tap each day to go to next screen to view appointment description and then hit back to get back to calendar.

c) The phone part leaves out much. In iPhone I could access contacts, call history, favorite contacts and voice mail all from one page. In EVO, I still cannot figure out how to create a short list of favorite contacts and then go to that list to dial that number from within the phone.

d) Practically no media management capabilities. I have all my media on Windows Home Server in form of iTunes library which I access over wi-fi. I tried Doubletwist to sync the iTunes library with EVO but all it did was try to copy music files from Windows Home Server to my laptop. Finally I had to use another program called iTunes Agent. However, using this program, I cannot sync my iTunes playlists. There is no way to add album art to tracks.

e) I run various web servers on my home network on different ports. I have registered my public IP with Dyndns.org. I had no trouble accessing these web sites over 3G network on iPhone. With EVO, I cannot access any of these web sites over 3G/4G. The browser just keeps trying and finally says that page not found, it may have been moved...

f) Battery life is way lower than I had expected.

a) learn how to use your phone and the search function on the forums. There are lots of backup programs out there to back up pretty much everything. Sprite does most of it except for apps. Appbrain will do apps. Paid apps remain in your download section of the market. For many, not being tied into some proprietary app on your pc is a godsend. For many that don't use Apple products it is a godsend. For those that have enjoyed the simplicity of itunes for so many years, it's a learning curve migrating away from it.

b) again, learn how to use your phone and the search function on the forums. There are many calendar apps that are more full featured than stock. Jorte is an awesome calendar app that has widgets as well. The month view actually will show appts within each day. It's very "Palm" like. Sorry, good calendars have been done long before apple and were more full featured too.

c) Voicemail is separate. Speed dialing your favorites is in the menu of the dialer. You can also create one touch speed dials from the dialer as well. Again, learn how to use your phone and try searching the forums for answers to your complaints.

d) Apple has always been about itunes integration. That's one plus they have. Media integration is slowly catching up. It wasn't a main driving feature of the OS, and I don't really think Google cares all that much. Nothing is perfect, even the iphone, or you wouldn't be checking out the Evo :)

e) maybe it's the browser. Try downloading and trying Dolphin. I don't get into the remote server thing, but again, search the forums as I'm sure you're not the first to have issues.

f) 2.2 should have improved battery life. Also you have a smaller battery than in the iphone. It's somewhat the price you pay for having the ability to change out your battery at will. Juice Defender is a great program to help minimize things that are running and syncing to help maximize battery life. Plus the more active widgets and things that sync you have running will drain the battery. The iphone doesn't have this capability thus will have better battery life.

And fyi, my Epic is doing better on the battery than my Evo is/was.

Seriously, complaints about things you can't do or that are different than what you are used to should really be addressed by taking to the search function and roaming around the forums. You are most likely far from the first and far from the last person to have the issue so it probably has a thread or three on the topic that can guide you to the answer. iOS is on revision 4. Android has just broken revision 2. Of course there will be things that aren't as smooth and integrated on it. It takes time.

@dbpaddler:
This thread is about iPhone user experience with EVO so I am allowed to point out differences between what is good on iPhone out of the box and even complain. I find your reply against the spirit of this thread. I was not expecting criticism of my technical skills and inability to use my phone or inability to use search function.

Ok, so assuming that I do not know how to use my phone and I am an idiot. Can you please give me an answer on how to do any of things I pointed out WITHOUT using third party apps? You said that I do not know how to use my phone so I assume that whatever I said can be done with built-in features. Please enlighten me.

BTW, I had iPhone for 2 years (8/23/08 to 9/4/10) and I spent $0.00 in apps during that period and was still able to do everything that I mentioned.

Thanks...

did you miss in each one where I showed you options....
backup...sprite, appbrain
calendar...jorte,
speed dial...via the menu in the dialer along with one touch dialing as well
voicemail...sorry, not integrated into the dialer. keep a shortcut on your homescreen.
remote server problems...try a different browser: dolphin HD and see if that helps.
battery life: smaller removable battery, larger screen, somewhat to be expected with more things accessing the net. keep active things to a minimum and try juice defender to help along with waiting for the 2.2 update to help further.

never said you were an idiot, but you didn't mention anything about not being able to find solutions to these problems. you just complained that the iphone could do x and your evo couldn't. Why should I assume you did due diligence in finding answers based on what you wrote. and there's something wrong in pointing out the iphone has a 2+ yr head start in development and some things just aren't that well integrated or finished as of yet? There's a reason these companies are skinning the OS, because Android is an unfinished and unpolished project that has more in common with a feature phone than it does a smart phone.

@dbpaddler:
Please see the title of this thread. I am allowed to complain. I have been searching for last 2 days. Do you how many threads come up on Google and how much time is spent in following each thread? The fact that I switched to EVO already assumes I am ready to learn the new system but criticism of my skills does not help. This is not what this thread is about and I sure hope this is not what this forum is about. The idea is to use a device to simplify my tasks and not make the device the purpose of my life. Maybe I am not cutout for Android. Maybe I should return it and stick to Apple, no matter how much I hate being locked into their system.

Thanks...

it's just a philosophy of buying an all in one mini system that integrates all the components and sounds pretty good, plays most things you throw at it but doesn't allow you to expand and customize. Or do you want to buy a real nice receiver and then go look for individual components and speakers that work and sound so much better and allow you to change and grow as your needs change?

I think if you take the time to do a little customization you'll end up doing everything you could do on your iphone and then some. Some things similar, some different and hopefully quite a few better. maybe not the media integration. Itunes is pretty much a closed system. If it were easy to integrate any device to it, how would apple tie you into their products?

Now voicemail...may not have it integrated into the dialer, but you can go google voice and forward missed calls to it whwere you can have multiple outgoing messages based off of who's calling, get text msg transcriptions so you may not even have to listen to the msg. Not to mention the new # to do cheap voip or have a separate # for other reasons.
