This seems like a pretty active thread, so I'll ask my fellow ex-iphoners if they can do a simple experiment for me and post if it works. I am about 30% ready to jump to Android and the Evo, yet the convenience of iTunes and syncing my apps/podcasts is keeping me back for now. I have a lot of games that I can't find online in the Android store, like PvsZ, Angry Birds, GTA, etc. However, the ability to run flash could push me over quickly. Could someone please go to Marvel.com and see if they can open a free digital comic and see if the experience is pretty cool on the huge Evo screen! When I try opening a comic using my iphone, I get a message to download flash player. If someone tells me this works, that would be enough to push me over the edge!
With the newly released Froyo 2.2 for the HTC EVo, Adobe Flash 10.1 is a dream come true! Finaly full flash, the real deal!
This is what's really getting me. I live in one of the largest cities in the country (Houston) and both my reception and 3G are absurdly bad. Bad to the point that if this is typical I don't know how Sprint has managed to stay in business.
Since I don't want to sound like I do nothing but complain, the phone itself is absolutely amazing. I'm totally in love with Android. Coming from iPhone OS where everything is locked down and sanitized it's a breath of fresh air. Definitely not something I would recommend to my less tech-savvy co-workers who probably would have thrown the phone at a wall by now, but I love it.
I really violently don't want to go back to the iPhone, but I may end up having to if these connectivity issues aren't resolved in the next few weeks. My iPhone is getting 1.5 to 1.8mbps down in the same locations that my Evo is getting .2 to .5mbps. And my cellular reception is pretty horrible where I live, which is only a hundred yards or so off of I-10. Not service I'm willing to continue paying for all around.
I know exactly what you mean. I also lived in Baytown by the racetrack but just recently moved to Texas City. I have been with Sprint for a few years and I have always had really good data speeds that are faster than Verizon actually. But since my recent move, I am getting the exact same symptoms you are describing with my data speeds. According to Sprint I'm in a good coverage area but I honestly think I'm in one of those areas where I'm between towers and getting spotty data coverage. I'm going to keep hounding Sprint untill I get to the bottom of it. I would definetely not switch back to AT&T, this can be resolved if it is brought to Sprint's attention. Which is what i plan to do.
It's very strange, actually. According to Sprint I live in an "excellent coverage area." People in the same building have Sprint phones (not Evos of course) and get full bars at all times. My iPhone had full bars at all times. I'm very close to probably the biggest interstate in the country in one of the biggest cities in the country. It HAS to be blanketed with coverage, there's no way it's not.
I'm really baffled by the reception. I know that my device has issues as it refuses to connect to 4G anywhere, even in the Sprint store. They (the Sprint reps) were at a loss. BestBuy has ordered me another phone so hopefully that will help with the other issues. I'm just afraid 3G and cellular "is what it is."
As for browser speed, I'm not really all that concerned with that. Mainly streaming media. Youtube is unsuable even at low res, and I'm not even able to reliably stream low bitrate MP3s from my Subsonic server. It's pretty bad.
I'm having the same issues with slow data since my recent move. Youtube buffers and plays a couple of seconds then buffers... hardly usable and very aggravating. I'm thinking Sprint will need to fix this asap or I will be demanding a credit on my bill every month for the lack of advertised data services that I am paying extra for.
I tried setting up 2 Google accounts today. And it does sync all email. I know that the 1st account set up is the one that's used for the Market. So, syncing the first account would be a no go unless you set it up NOT to sync.
But, if you set that up, doesn't just the email get synced from the 2nd account? It looked like it didn't sync the Contacts from the 2nd account. Or, did I miss something there?
If not, then your system is a lifesaver.....
This has been confusing for me also. You sign in with your google email account when you first turn on the Evo, but yet when you open the email application your gmail account isn't listed. If you add the same email account to the email application or even a different gmail account, it shows up... this is wierd. Can somebody who is familiar with the email/gmail accounts please give us an explanation to this behavior?? What is the proper way to have your single gmail account setup so that you have your contacts and the emaill app setup properly for just one gmail account???
I gotta say I agree with you on this one. I would never go back to the iPhone but the iPhone version of gmail was lightyears ahead of google's version of their own product. I think google needs to totally revamp the gmail app,..there are times that I can't even click on a link in Android gmail. My suggestion to you is use K9 for you email.
I agree, Google should have their own Gmail implemented in a superior way as opposed to Apple having a superior Gmail implementation on their iPhone. That simply doesn't make sense!!! Boo to Android for letting Apple hold your hand!!!
Two calls in two years? What have you been smoking?
Actually, it happens ALL THE TIME. AT&T retention dept called me today to discuss the issues I've been having. Four minutes into the call it dropped. I hadn't moved an inch. The guy called me back and the first thing he said was, "I know, I know. I'm very sorry."
Basically my calls last four minutes or less.
So actually, very common.
I have three days to decide between the EVO and the iPhone4. Three days.
My hard headed brother has AT&T and more times than not when he calls me or I call him the call drops. It's not my Sprint service dropping the call, my phone always has a good signal and the other thing is this only happens when I talk to AT&T customers. I've come to expect it so I just wait for them to call me back and they always try to play it off like it was my phone/service that dropped the call. LOL We all know the truth.
Decide on the network you feel is best for you then get the best phone phone for you on that network. Different people have different priorities and thankfully I'm please with both my Sprint service and my HTC EVO so I don't have to live with crappy service or a crappy phone
Any suggestions? This is something that everyone probably deals with. Is there a spot on the screen that you can touch but doesn't activate anything, just get you out of sleep mode?
I know what you mean. Try changing the time that the display goes to sleep and also use the "home key" instead of touching the screen in a random location. I think HTC and Sprint need to add this issue to their to-do list and make it happen in a future patch/update. But it's not that big a deal to me, I learn to adapt to these minor things.
Wow .. you were right about the live wallpaper causing lag. I was running the aniPet Aquarium and scrolling through the apps page was choppy/laggy as all get go as was the multitouch pinch/expand. Turned it off and talk about a hug difference!
As much as I love the aquarium I think is is going to stay off and I will load it just to impress friends when showing off the EVO.
Now I just need to find somewhere to go to find a static background I like.
I use "Aquarium Free" and I have no lag on my EVO. I suspect you have something else running on your phone that is hogging up resources, not leaving enough memory for the live wallpaper. Remove task killer if you have that installed. It's not necessary for android, it's a misconception plus Froyo 2.2 has the ability to manually end tasks.
it is true that we are all different and think differently..
you are a perfect example .. we are so different...
little things will break a deal... ????
better screen size, superior notifications, most importantly better networks....
but big issues (problems) you can live with??
I'm baffled by this ignorance myself. Ignorance meaning ignoring all logical reasoning and making choices in contrary to what most would agree is the "right thing to do". Get used to this behavior we are all surrounded by people who make the oddest of choices and I admit I have family members who are just as stubborn. They spend $120 per month with one work nextel phone and pay $$$ for 3 personal lines on AT&T. One of those personal lines is an iPhone plan, one is a Blackberry data plan and the third is a regular line with no data. So they spend a LOT more on wireless service than they would if they were to switch to Sprint and get 3 line simply everything. I have been trying to reason with them for 2 years now and they are stubborn as a blind ******ed mule. And it getss funnier, they are trying to budget their money and cut corners where they can but a simple switch to a much better and cheaper wireless service is still hard for them to grasp. I did manage to persuade my nephew to get an android phone and he likes it much better than his old iPhone.
^MrX8503 is right in the point that Android/HTC's implementation is very 'unpolished' when compared to the iPhone, but the network alone is enough to keep me away from the iPhone...
...after all, it is a phone first.
Exactly
Please post pics of your EVO with an AMOLED screen, otherwise it will be pretty hard to believe you have the only one with this type of screen.
