(I am ever closer to 1,200 posts lol) IMO it's worth it... Downsides... Hmmm i really can't think of any truthfully
I've read of like two..but it's been awhile now so I forget what those downsides are but I'll just do a search and I'll get my answer there thanks for the info

Downsides:
1. Possibly bricking of phone (how realistic this is depends on the phone and root method) If you follow the steps correctly it is quite rare.
2. Can void your warranty. Not sure, you will have to check with your ToS and see.

Neither is likely to be an issue. If you have had the phone for a bit and know there is not a hardware problem with it, #2 is not an issue at all (unless something were to develop in the time frame between rooting and when your warranty would expire). #1 is really really rare, but there is always a chance. Make sure you read the directions well beforehand and ask questions before doing it if you have some.

Well most of the time you need superuser... although the MT is pretty much pre-rooted so you can gain root access and not use superuser (although superuser allows you to control which apps have access to the root of your phone)

Being able to flash roms doesn't mean you are rooted. Being rooted really is having superuser access. Flashing roms usually just needs an unlocked bootloader and custom recovery then to be rooted you just need to flash superuser.

I give up. Lol. Technically all roms are aosp roms then...

Roms that use frameworks based on OEM UI are not AOSP, nor is MIUI. You can't make apps built to work on Sense work on AOSP which is why some apps (at least for VZW) that are carrier based will work on Sense roms but not AOSP.

(I am ever closer to 200 posts) well it all boils down to this is rooting worth it? downsides?

I think it is worth it for most devices. I haven't rooted my kindle fire because I use the amazon streaming video and that is disabled for rooted devices (although I may root to get the market on it then unroot) All my other Android devices have been or are rooted. IMO it is worth it.

Downsides...voiding warranty, having a soft brick (brick that can be recovered), rarely having a hard brick, losing more time messing with your phone...that is about all I can think of

oh yes thanks for reminding me yes bricking it and warranty void are the only downsides and bricking it is rare so is only excluded if the I follow the step by step procedure

The MT can actually have root permission without superuser. I'm not talking about flashing roms (I can do that on my un rooted MT4GS). I mean being able to use apps like screencast without superuser. It's less secure since it doesn't have the apps ask you for permission though.

Pretty much, just be sure to be careful in doing what you are doing and you don't have anything to worry about really.

Okay, that makes sense, I thought you were talking about the bootloader/recovery. I wouldn't say it was rooted or anything close to it if you can't use apps like root explorer or TiBU. But being less secure is a good way to describe it IMO ;)

well if I decide to I just need to find the best safest method for my phone of course I will have to expand my knowledge of the process and what ROMS are and all these other things

Then you can Android-nerd out IRL and secure the sterotype with your peers very quickly...

I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone with an Android phone and asked if they were rooted only to get the 1000 yard stare :D

The triumph basically comes with sudo type access (if you know linux that makes sense).

haha me as well!!! i might be getting my dad to root is bionic. :)

i pointed him in the direction of AF of course :)

I've been trying to convince my sister to learn how to flash roms on my thunderbolt. She has yet to change since she started using it and she is content with running the rom that is on it. I browse the TB ATR and think I would like to try this rom that doesn't have working data...but she would go for that...

my dad is interested in it for the wifi tether aspect when he drives cross country. other than that he doesnt see the point of it. even asked me if vzw will know he rooted and charge him for the wifi hotspot

I told my friend about rooting... He wants to root his Galaxy facinate or whatever VZW galaxy s variant is. But his fiancee won't let him lol.
