FoxFi No Longer Free

I also received the rude awakening this past Friday when trying to use Foxfi to tether my tablet.
If you are rooted, you can easily get the built in Verizon hotspot to work for free:

Step 1. You will need a rooted Droid Bionic.
Step 2. You will need to buy SQLite Editor app on the Market, it

Foxfi works on 3g but not on 4g,and I have the paid version this just started acting up today, did Verizon slip something to block on 4g.

Hmm, I'm on a windows 7 laptop tethered to my Bionic with FoxFi to post this right now!:D

I think the price tag is bs on both ends but more so on verizon

Why am i paying a load of money for a data plan and cant use it as a hotspot

This garbage is crap and the fcc should tell verizon they cant charge 20 a month to share your connection

Its like your isp saying oh you have a router that will be 20$ more on your bill tyvm

The world of cellphones is rediculoysly expensive

This used to happen. I remember TWC/RR telling me that the only way to hook more than one computer up to my cable modem was to pay $30 a month for a 2nd IP address. Instead, I spent $49 on a router and hooked up everything I wanted.

Nice, huh?
You pay for data, and then they get to tell you what you can and can't do with it!

It is all ones and zeros.
What is the difference if I use the data on my phone, or use it on my tablet?

Answer: there is no difference

Were are in the grips of corporate greed, pure and simple.

Thanks for this. It should be in with the tips.

I can't take credit for it. I found it somewhere on the forum awhile back, I believe over in all things root. I had performed this right after I rooted my phone, then copied and saved the instructions on my laptop in case I ever wanted to reverse it. Once I found Foxfi I did change it back so that my phone would be 100% stock for the ICS OTA update. I was traveling when Foxfi quit working so I used Zumocast to pull the word file with the instructions up from my home computer and reapplied the hack. That allowed me to access the web from my tablet while on the road.

I have been connected to the 4G network using the paid version of FoxFi since yesterday afternoon. Works fine.

When we traveled into this area, I had to reboot the phone to get it to connect to the 4G network, but that was before I launched FoxFi.

The TestMy.net Broadband Internet Speed Test shows we are getting download speeds of 12.6 Mbps. That's the fastest I have seen yet.

Unfortunately, our destination for the next few days will be a 3G area, then we will be in Mexico for a while.

I have a fixed data plan limited to 4GB per month (I got the double your data plan a while ago) and I read above that the hotspot should be free. It is NOT free. I tried to use it and a message popped up that it will cost me $20 per month if I want to use that feature. I do not have a share everything plan.

My FoxFi is version 1.95.3 and it has a usage limit.

Let my Wi-Fi go: FCC rules Verizon can't charge for Wi-Fi tethering | ZDNet
Then you need to contact Verizon. It is illegal for them to charge a hotspot (also known as tethering) fee for those on limited data plans because of the spectrum they use. They can only charge a hotspot fee for those still on unlimited data plans.

EDIT: Now, it is possible that if you are in a 3G only area that they may be able to charge you. The C block spectrum that Verizon can not charge a hotspot fee for seems to only cover their LTE service. But if you are on 4G, they are not allowed to charge a fee for you so should call them about the popup and refer them to the FCC ruling.

Just google around for old foxfi versions. They'll work fine till the dev works out the bugs.

do you have a link to a good one? reason is I don't want to buy the full version until they work out the kinks too many people having problems with it

FoxFi is still working fine for me. You pay 6.97 and it doesnt stop on you etc. Which is nothing compared to the verizon fee. I just pop up FoxFi pick a name for my hotspot and password, and im good to go. I dont usually buy apps but this was well worth it. I am on a grandfathered data plan.

Sloooow

I've been using FoxFi full (paid) version. Very fast wi-fi connection with no problems... until somehow T Mo "detected" what I was doing and started to redirect my browser to their "Pay for tethering page". I then installed PDA Net (free version) using USB mode but the connection is very slooooow. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm running Windows 8 and using a Samsung Galaxy Blaze.
