Help Freezing Problem. Exchange phone?

Katarain

Lurker
Hello,

I bought the Optimus V less than a week ago. It's my first smartphone. My last phone was a $10 candy bar. So this is a big step up.

I love a lot of things about this phone, and I'm already growing attached to it. The problem is that it started freezing on me before I installed the first app.

It has frozen once or twice while I was using the camera. I'm not exactly sure what I did wrong, as I was trying to figure out how to use it at the time. I think it had something to do with using the picture button on the side. I had to restart the phone.

The onscreen keyboard has frozen several times, usually this involves the use of the mic speech-to-text feature. I had to restart.

I was testing navigator and it froze after I spoke my destination (which it heard correctly, because I saw it typed out). I got a force close message, but I clicked wait because I was in a patient mood. It stayed frozen, but I was able to go back to the home screen. Later, I got a call and I was unable to answer it. I actually had to remove the battery that time. There was no response when I held down the power button.

A few times I've been in the market or browsing the web and I've been kicked back to my home screen. I thought this was user error, since I'm new to the phone--but I read that someone else was having the same problem, so I am not so sure it was me.

I am unable to play some videos in a veggie tales app that I downloaded for my daughter. Now I realize that this is not a frozen/crashing issue, but it's really annoying that the error message doesn't tell me why the videos won't play, so I have no idea if I can fix it.

I read through several of the similar threads to this one, and I was encouraged that often the person only needed to exchange their phone. Maybe I just got a bad one. But then I read another thread that suggests there are at least two generations of the optimus V, and the later ones seem to have all of the problems. I don't know what version mine is, don't know how to figure that out without root access, but I assume it's the newer version since I just bought it.

I bought the optimus v based on the many glowing reports I read online, including in this forum, but I don't like having to restart my phone, or having to remove the battery, and most of all, I don't like not being able to answer my calls.

ETA: I also don't like that I get notification beeps for seemingly no reason. No messages, no missed calls, no emails, no nothing.

Any suggestions?

Someone here may recognize the symptoms and have a better solution. Personally, if it was my less than a week old phone I would be looking to return it for a new one.

I probably would, but they're out of stock at Target where I bought it. They have no way for me to order one, either.

Katarain,

First of all, what you have been experiencing is not typical behavior for for LG Optimus V phones. There are basically three things that could have happended:

  1. a bad app,
  2. screwy data or settings on the phone,
  3. a bad phone.

If, as you have indicated, exchanging the phone would not be quick and easy for you, you could try the following to try to narrow who the offending culprit might be:

  1. Uninstall all apps you have installed, i.e., all that didn

Try pulling battery and holding power button for 30 sec. Then re-install battery and power up.

If that doesn't help, go to menu/settings/privacy/factory reset. This will wipe all data and and apps from your phone, so back up what you can on a PC.
When it is done go to the market app and sign in with your Google account. This will give you all your contacts back. Then go to the market home page and push the menu button and select "my apps". All your paid apps will be there.

Thanks for the tips. I'll work through doing all of that. Thankfully, I don't have too many apps to uninstall. Do I need to remove the downloaded file, or is uninstalling them enough?

Also, will the factory-reset erase the pictures and videos I have taken? I have a USB cable that I think is the right size, so I'll try to move anything I want to keep before I start troubleshooting. Hopefully that won't be a problem like it was with our older flip phone.

ETA: Thanks also to AndyOpie for answering my question before I asked it. I would thank you, but I guess I used mine up for the day.

The factory reset will wipe everything on the phone but will not touch your sd card. Basically, it will reset your phone to how it was when you first got it. It will be like it was when you turned it on the first time out of the box.

I ended up replacing the phone for a new one. My old phone was android version 2.2.2, but this one is 2.2.1. Can anyone tell me why that might be and what it means? My husband remembered the hardware version of the old phone, and he says he's pretty sure it's the same in this new phone, 1.2.

Edit: Been googling it, and it looks like 2.2.1 is actually better, and that 2.2.2 was intentionally crippled to forbid tethering. 2.2.2 also has a different screen that some say is not as good, runs on different drivers, and interferes with loading some roms. Sounds like I got a good deal in the switch.

The screen also looks nicer on the 2.2.1 phones. The newer phones have a weird green tint to them. When comparing side to side it's noticeable.
