Help Froyo 2.2, Settings > Privacy > Backup option, GONE

A great little app that supports Android phones and performs a full Contacts backup, SMS backup, Call history, Calendar entries, and shows the phone technical data is MyPhoneExplorer: FJ Software Development
It works perfectly with my HTC Desire. Saves all the heart ache with what's been said above. You can create a backup of everything and perform a restore when required.

BTW: you will need to install the MyPhoneExplorer app to the phone from the Android Market then you can sync through either WiFi or USB connection.

Hope it works for you.
Thx! Loved MyPhoneExplorer when I had SE. Helped a lot!

When I installed HTC's 2.2 the missing Privacy option was one of the first things I noticed and then I realised I could still get to them by searching the phone, but I recently wanted to check one of the settings and the phone search no longer finds the options.

Try typing it all in lower case letters, eg "privacy", it seems it won't show up if you use a capital "P".

EDIT: i've just tested this with a lower case "p" and an upper case "P" on my Nexuse S which is running Android 2.3.4, it doesn't seem to show in the search app even though the option is there in the settings menu, odd.

HTC Desire
Android Version: 2.2
Network: T Mobile UK
Taskiller Used?: No
Rooted : No

Issue:

I followed the suggestion earlier in this thread (went to menu>settings>search >searchable items> scrolled down to "Settings" and clicked the tick button AND THEN exited out of "Settings" and clicked the search button on the home screen and typed "privacy") and the Privacy tab option did indeed appear. I selected the option for it to carry out auto back up.

The HTC Desire manual says that "After you do a factory reset or update your phone, you will be asked if you want to restore the backed up data after you turn on your phone". However, after I carried out the factory reset no such option appeared on the screen and I was unable to get my backed up data using this route. (Luckily, I had also kept other backups so it wasn't actually lost for good).

Has anyone actually successfully restored the backed up data after a factory reset in the way contemplated in this thread ??

My only thought is that after selecting the auto backup option, perhaps a backup was not actually carried out by the phone but if that's the case, I am not sure what I would need to do to force it to carry one out.

Any thoughts would be appreciated !

Cheers

From reading other threads, my understanding is that the backup functionality was completely removed in 2.2, hence why the menu option was hidden. (why the option was only hidden, not removed, I can only guess at).
You can tick the box using the method you describe, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Because the feature is officially disabled, the phone also won't ask you if you want to restore because it is not expecting there to be a backup. The manual relates to the phone as originally released - with 2.1 when this feature was available.

Thanks SiHa.
That sounds logical.
As my Desire came with 2.2 I'd (wrongfully, it appears) assumed that the on-line manual would have been updated.
