Froyo + Inconsistency = Gingerbread

I do realize that people make mistakes. I mean, come on, we are all human. However, for a multi billion dollar software and information technologies conglomerate and communications bohemoth (Google, Motorola & Verizon) to have this many inconsistencies in the software updates, to what was inarguably and already a stellar operating system (froyo), is unthinkable. These people are supposed to be the best at what they do but they churned out an update that has more people crying foul than a room full of chicken farmers. Did their checks and balances people take a day off when the GB update came rolling through? I was under the impression that the group at verizon were quality control nazis Judging by how long it takes them to approve an update?

Another thing, don't they have people that take suggestions from the public as to the changes that they should be making rather than just making changes to the system with the hopes that people like it? I do understand a company sometimes has to make changes to the systems to make it easier for them to maintain and program, but whatever happened to the old saying, "if it ain't broke don't fix it?" Okay, maybe the fact that the new keyboard sucks, my phone is laggy & slow, the camera is broken, my swipe lock screen is broken, and the battery life is terrible, is not GB's fault. Then again, maybe it's the 1 armed man?

I see 64.4% of people have issues.

Thumbs up. Minor Issues, but I can live with it tho.

I have to agree...

was nobody here when the first Froyo update hit??...when Froyo first launched on our phones it was a MESS

I see 64.4% of people have issues.

and how many people had issues on Froyo??...i think everyone had some minor niggles with Froyo that never got fixed...when Froyo first launched it would have probably been 99% of people with some sort of issues...

you also have to take into account what people are considering "issues." If their complaint is that "the hard key lights are too bright!" That is not an "issue," that is a design choice they do not like..not a fault in the software itself...

I must be really lucky. I had no issues on Froyo and I have none on GB with the exception of removing the birthday entries out of contacts.

My guess is that Gingerbread was tested pretty extensively by Motorola before it was released. Did they catch every bug? Absolutely not! But most of the bigger issues were likely identified, documented for future correction, or corrected. From what I've seen, and this is in no way scientific, "most" of the issues being reported are specific to individual handsets or groups of handsets. They are not necessarily issues on all handsets. Finding these types of bugs using just a small subset of the handsets in the field is nearly impossible to do consistently.

My handset, for example, has only one truly annoying quirk... and it's not even an issue caused by Gingerbread. My handset is in a Trident Kracken case and the window over the proximity sensor gets dirty. When it does the screen doesn't illuminate when I move the phone away from the side of my head. Makes it really difficult to hang up a call when the screen won't illuminate. For a couple of days, till I was able to figure out how to clean that tiny little window, I literally had to dis-assemble the case to get to the power button to get the screen to illuminate... just to hang up the call.

Just updated to 2.3.3 a couple of days ago, and the only thing I've really noticed is less battery life. Everything else seem to work fine. At least no worse than before.

People who are having major problems since the update need to perform a factory reset. GB runs perfectly on my phone and always has (I've run every leak up to .596) both odexed and deodexed.

I can understand the frustration though. When the first 2.2 OTA came my phone had all sorts of problems after the update until I performed a factory reset. Battery drain, force closes, reboots, etc. I'm not saying that GB is perfect but I don't think it's any less stable than 2.2.1 was for me.

I just hate all the crap Verizon makes them put in there. After being on GB for almost 2 weeks, I SBF'd back to Froyo and will stay there until I decide I want a new phone. The only issue I have ever had with Froyo is a random reboot when connecting the USB cable.

You must not watch movies on your phone in low light. This was not an issue on froyo. Yes, it's an issue not a "design choice".

No...lol...

an "issue" would be something that does not work as it is intended...something like WiFi drops. FC's, or random reboots...that is NOT the case with the LED lights...

you don't LIKE the CHANGE that Motorola made to the brightness of the hard button backlights....that is fine...but its not a bug...

and actually no i don't watch movies on my phone in low light...i have a 67" Samsung LED HDTV for that...you want to talk about giving off a lot of light in a dark room...try that...

Im still on froyo with no plans to ever update. My phone is fast and does what I want it to do.

I'm also on Froyo and quite happy. I may upgrade at some point but I'm concerned about ruining the good thing I have going at present. I guess time will tell, but I have enough concerns to wait after reading some of the posts here and in other threads...

Man u just wont listen this update has screwed my phone up to almost to the point I can't use it! The home key lights will stay on the hole time ur watching a vid and wont go out in low light the they wont work at all when ur not watching a vid in the dark bluetooth goes nuts every hour and have to reboot the phone. Battery went from 12the hours the way I use it to 4me hours with the big battery. The stock video player crashes every 4-5 hours. The key board lag is so slow! It adding hole complete words while typing is bullshit! Stock apps forcing close constantly! And I done a full wipe on my first phone and this is the 3 set of replacements Verizon has sent me and mine and my wifes phones has done the same thing so that's 6 phones that's done all of those things and none of that stuff was a problem on froyo. If I knew how to get froyo back on my phones I would. Plus all the changes in the stock music player is bullshit and the contact changes, why do they do this stuff and take good stuff away. They really screwed this up all the way.

ok...first i did listen...i was talking about the hardkey lights...not all the other issues you have with Gingerbread

however, you're still wrong about the lights...

as for the rest of the issues...i will point you to all the people on these very forums that have been running GB for months now with none of those problems to indicate that these are NOT inherent issues with Gingerbread...

i will ask the same question i ask everyone that has had problems...did you do a data wipe before upgrading to Gingerbread?...if the answer is no then that could be the cause of your problems...

there is one way to truly try and fix this...and a data wipe is not the answer...you can either SBF to Froyo and install the update on a perfectly fresh Froyo install...or use the Gingerbread SBF file to install a fresh copy of Gingerbread on your phone...

you obviously don't remember how HORRIBLE the initial release of Froyo was on our phones either by the sound of it...

you obviously have an app causing your battery issues because even on Gingerbread its possible to get quite good battery life on the X i took this screen cap and still had 40% of my battery left...so its certainly not just a Gingerbread issue with the battery...

i can honestly say that i have experienced none of the problems you have...im sorry that you have...but saying that Motorola screwed up royally is also not the case...proven by the fact that many people are not experiencing issues like the ones you are...

if the update was just plain bad...then everyone would be experiencing these problems...

the reason i find some of this amusing is how easily/quickly people forget things...in this thread i see people saying how great, and stable...even the word "stellar" was used to describe how great Froyo was...

it TRULY makes me wonder if you guys had your X's, or were around the forums when Froyo first launched...because it was a mess of wifi issues, and random reboots...it was slow, it was laggy, it was ugly...it was just plain TERRIBLE according to some...

and here we are some 10 months later and it was the best OS made....oh how easily we forget...

Where do I get it? How do I do it? How do I preserve my data as well? Last time i factory did a factory reset, I had to download all my apparently again...

Man....people need to chill! These few problems that people are having trouble with are getting way too magnified and it makes GB and motorola look like a total failure. Sale it and get a different frigging phone already. I hated the fascinate and instead of b....ting all the time I changed to the X.

Look, I love open source. But if being open source going to compromise the integrity of the software updates due to inconsistencies in the open source applications people can install, it just becomes a big pain in the arse. I think people get upset because they like their phones working and then when I stop working the way they are used to having them work, they get frustrated and blame the manufacturer. In this case, it's just odd because I see a lot of upset people.

Factory reset, data wipes do usually fixes problems. I always do that before the install of a major OS update. Its something that was drilled into our heads at one forum with the Droid 1 and running custom ROMs.

I guess I'm one of the lucky "few" that had no major problems with the Froyo update on my Droid 1 and DX1 or GB update on my DX1.

What Metfanant is saying is all these problems are not so wide spread that you can say Verizon or Motorola screwed this up. Even with ppl complaining going from 2.1 to 2.2 on the Droid 1 the majority of ppl didnt have problems even then.

For me, Froyo made my Droid 1 a new phone. But...there were threads here n there that said Froyo for the Droid 1 was a disaster. Was it me wiping data and cache before and probably after the install? Who knows. I know on Windows desktop OS's the best install is the one where you do a clean install instead of an upgrade install.
