Or is the only way to solve this installing the latest RUU which will do a complete clean install?
in another thread on this forum. The OTA update is that, an update. It just adds changed files. The RUU is a full flash for the phone (i.e a complete ROM, radio, etc.)
By default, the software does regular checks from the update server and if one is available, you will get a notification that a new update is available for your phone. At that point all you do is follow the prompts. If you want, you can check manually under Settings, About phone, System software updates, and select Check now to see if one is available for you phone. An unbranded phone firmware will get the update directly from an HTC server. Any branded phones, like a Telus, O2, Telstra, etc. will check with the carrier's server for updates and it usually takes a month or so to get those due to branding by the carrier.ok... stupid question of the day...
how do you update OTA?

I got the 25mb OTA update ok, but it did reset my Calendar and News widgets (not sure what else got nuked).

I always do a factory reset after any kind of flashing to reset everything. I still don't know why I lost those two things when everyone says the update doesn't affect your settings. It might have been a simple glitch and it works fine after the factory reset...I'm not too concerned about it as a sync fixes the calendar and the news widget is really easy to setup.did you figure out how to fix this or did you do a factory reset?
thanks

Soory for this silly question but I really don't know.
I have a Desire that i bought unbranded (i.e. simlockfree, not bundled with an abo). Do I need a Gold Card to install a RUU ?
Just a quick question about the new OTA update. I debranded (O2) with 2.09, and I still have the Gold Card in the phone, but I didn't get the 2.10 OTA update, and nothing's showing when I check manually. Should I keep waiting, or is there something amiss?
Managed to get Software number 2.09.405.8 onto my HTC Desire using first RUU file in Post #1 in this thread. Tried checking for new software but no updates found. Also tried latest RUU in Post #1 but that just gives a USB connection error [170]USB Connection Error (after around 30 seconds of showing "Verifying information on your Android phone...). Any ideas? First RUU installed fine.

The second updated RUU file will install, but you MUST update the drivers with the latest HTC Sync program v3.0.544 or it will throw the connection error 170. Once you have that Sync version installed, it will work. Make sure you uninstall the old Sync version and the driver package that came with it, then install the new version.I could never get that second Ruu to install on my phone after four days of messing with it and getting the same error message I gave up!! I even tried two computers and never got it to install but did get the same error message on both computers. The OTA did install though.

Having said that, I dumped the newer version and went back to the first RUU and installed again. It works better for me than the update as I noticed a couple of minor lags and an app I use a lot started crashing with the newer update. I'll stick with this version until something newer and better comes along. I have disabled the automatic check for new versions so I won't be bothered with any updates until I'm ready.

Yes, I believe so. I have the Telus Desire, unlocked on the Rogers network, and I did the update to FroYo version 2.2 without issue. I also have the S-LCD version and the posted version includes drivers for both display types. You do need to convert the 8gig memory card into a "goldcard" to install this and all other updates, but once done, it's a goldcard for life, so have at it.Hello guys.
Does this update work on every type of Desire?
I am currently using the Desire from Telus Canada, which is the SLCD one.
Can I follow the instruction to upgrade to 2.2?
Thanks
