Help fully charged battery reads dead

My optimus v will start up but the battery icon shows up black with a question mark through it. It starts up all the way to tge home screen then shuts down. I can't even unlock the phone. I am currently unable to send the phone back to the company so I could use some tips on how to fix this problem. Thanks

Plug in the charger. Leave it plugged in 24 hours. Don;t touch the phone until the 24 hours are up. See if that charges it. If not you may need a new battery.

I'll agree with with Rukbat here, it sounds like you may have a bad battery.

Do as his advice above suggests, as well is the battery swollen?

I'd opt into buying a new battery would be the fix.

The best way is to charge the battery while in the recovery mode.
Pull battery, then reinsert it. Hold HOME + VOLUME DOWN, then push the POWER button. Hold all at the same time until you see the LG logo.
It will take less than 30 sec. for the recovery menu to be displayed.

Plug phone into charger.

Leave on charger for half hour. Select to reboot system now after time is up.
If it boots into system, great. Finish charging.

If not, the wall unit, the USB cord, charging port, or the battery could be bad.

Note: If you could not see recovery menu (black/blank screen), plug phone into charger for 30 minutes anyway. Pull battery and feel if it's warm. If yes, get back into recovery menu and see if it will display. If yes, leave in recovery menu for 30 minutes.
If battery is not warm, then wall unit, USB cord, battery, or charging port is bad.

Sounds like a battery problem to me too. Do what everyone suggested. Batteries are pretty cheap these days, so it shouldn't cost you much. And if it's still under warranty, you may be able to get a free replacement battery.

I will try everyones suggestions. I have a few new batteries as well as a charger. Every battery reads the same. Also I have access to another lg optimus v and every battery as well as the charger work on that one. That is how I know the battery is fully charged.

Could be the ROM is bad.
Do you have the stock ROM, or a custom ROM?
In any case, you will need to Install a different ROM to find out.
If you are not rooted, and need help, let me know.

My phone is bone stock. Will I still be able to try any of this with the problem I described? My phone shuts down quickly after start up. I'm assuming after it reads that the battery is dead.

Try and see if you can get it into emergency mode.
Pull battery.
Hold down POWER for 30 sec.
Reinsert battery.
Now hold down: HOME +BACK as you plug phone into computer.
Let me know what you get, but dont leave in e-mode as it won't charge battery. Just see if it will do it, then unplug and pull battery.

I don't have acces to a computer, but I have an android based tablet. Will I be able to do it with that? Also I have a second lg optimus v that the whole memory was wiped. Is there a way to upload a new program with the same tablet, or maybe make one working phone out of two? As I said before my resources are pretty slim and I'm trying to do all this myself.

Without at least a laptop, it can' be done that I know of. If you have a friend with a computer, see if they would be willing to allow you to visit and use it.

Just throwing this out there. Did you check to see if there was any corrosion on the battery terminals on the phone itself? Make sure the battery is making good contact with the terminals in the back of the phone.

A pencil eraser is a good tool to remove any corrosion.
Good idea on checking the corrosion rigerrman0421.
