After my limited exposure to its principles, I think the only thing "common" about "common core" is along the lines of common dumbing-down (like the lowest common denominator...).

How else do you explain this kind of result? You don't want kids knowing the answer, but knowing an inaccurate estimate?

No Shiznet? They're really teaching this stuff? I'm glad my kids got out in time. Is it a reasonable estimate that children with these math skills will have a hard time finding employment? Explain your answer...

yeah.. at first glance.. it does look idiotic

but you have to look at the whole situation... at the context...
what are the instructions?... did it ask for students to first round off the numbers?
what were they learning?... where they learning how to do estimating?
