Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

You've tried the old trick of airplane mode off and on I take it.

Yep. Even flashed stock rom, different kernel (which probably is irrelevant to the issue), then went back to my nandroid backup after everything else I tried didn't work.

Might be sim card, but I doubt it. Web pages load very quickly on Chrome, and then there's the fact that speedtest.net tells me I'm up to 30mbps.

Weird. Very, very weird.

Just went to T-Mobile on my lunch break. Switched out the sim card. I didn't have time to wait and see so I took it back to work.

Same issue.

I'm thinking I might just return this since I'm still in the return window, and go with the Nexus 5. At least I will be able to rom as much as I want. . .

Ugh.

That's a bad deal, Han. :(
Just be glad you're not still on Verizon LTE. I get, during the day, max 8Mb down. Sure, it's not bad, but it's just gotten slower and slower the past couple years.

I have a similar but slightly different issue on my Nexus 5 on T-Mobile prepaid. Granted I might not have downloaded anything big enough to hit the hypothetical throttle, but I only notice that my upload speeds get really neutered when running a speed test. I'll start out at 8-12mbps up, then it will just plummet to .5-1.5mbps and stay there.

Switching to HSPA only fixes the issue, but it's obviously not as fast as LTE.

At least I don't have to return the phone anymore. I really like it.

I'll just have to deal with it.

I'd actually rather have this problem than the ones I had on Verizon, lol.

Edit:

HSPA+ speedtest yields 3.08mbps down, 1.5 up.

I start to look at coverage maps, and look into carriers to leave VZW, and then I keep seeing compelling reasons to hang onto my two unlimited accounts for at least a little while longer.

That's because the fast.t-mobile.com apn throttles the HSPA speed. If you change it to the epc.tmobile.com apn it fixes that issue.

Here's a hot tip for those who like Google Wallet. Apparently once the Verizon Moto X was updated to KitKat, and the version of Google Wallet from the Nexus 5 was sideloaded, tap 2 pay works. Since the Play Store isn't updated to the version the Nexus 5 uses, that's the only way thus far. However once it does get updated, it appears that Google Wallet tap 2 pay will work on any 4.4 device.

Not sure I understand. If I change it to epc.tmobile.com, and stay on HSPA+, I will get better than 3mbps, theoretically?

Yeah it should make a difference if the tower hardware is still available. They have been removing HSPA+42 in some areas to make room for LTE leaving it with just HSPA+21. Even if it's not there, you could hypothetically push your download speeds up to 5-8mbps, though your upload and ping times would remain about the same.

Thanks for the tip! I'm at 10.56 up and about 3 down. Much better. :)

It also translates to real world downloading. Things are definitely moving at a fast clip now.

Thanks again!

A hundred Phandroid Points to whoever can name this character and where he first appeared. Early, I know you know it, so you are automatically advanced to the next round. Let the kids figure it out. :D

Original version of Day the Earth Stood Still... 1951.

Oh wait... You said to let the kids figure it out, ooooops!

Kelmar wins. Even though he probably has the advantage of old age like me and infinite repository of trivia like Early.

So, um, Kelmar, your turn ;)

And that's yet another movie on BB's to-see list.

Hey guys and gals. Just wanted to check in and share the good news. :) Our boys arrived safely last night around 9pm! Mom is doing OK. She's taking a little longer in recovery than expected but she's steadily improving. It was a very long labor, over 13 hours that ended in a C-section so she was just absolutely drained.
