Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

What movie poster???
I'm from that era:)
Ghost busters?? Breakfast club
Elmo's fire?
Highlander??
????:):):)
Hahaha

Is there an independent site with objective "scientific" comparative analyses of call quality or radio strength? I'd love to be able to compare what is a known call quality for me (my Moto) against these new models like the G3 and M8.

Nope.

S4GRU is run by engineers & techs and they do that for Sprint models that interest them.

They evaluate and often measure effective radiated power and antenna gain (and refer to the FCC) but not sensitivity. For that you need a proper anechoic chamber and surprisingly very few of those exist due to cost - and then add on really expensive RF test equipment. (RF test equipment in my lab far exceeded 6 figures and I wasn't nearly ready to test cell radios.)

Then comes call quality and that depends on your network's signal shaping or throttling, what vocoders they support (think - DVD vs Blu Ray but for converting your voice to digital) and that support is shared by the phone and the network - and then you get to the quality of the audio circuits and the speakers in the phones.

Reviewers talking their psuedo-inteelicked-y'all babble during their reviews sound dumber than chimpanzees sorting out a bag of hammers to me.

So, fortunately, we all have each other here to get tips from.

I think it's clear which part above is fact and which is opinion so I think I've been pretty fair. :)

Ten minutes in an anechoic chamber can get unnerving, I assure you! You can barely hear yourself... let alone anyone else. Really cool stuff.

I used to test for electromagnetic compatibility between equipment and systems. Talk about some specialized and expensive test equipment! And like Early said: it's nearly impossible to get good reads outside an anechoic chamber, because radio frequency radiation is EVERYWHERE. It's hard to discern what's being tested from the ambient environment.

Oh well, that was another life ago. I guess I need to get back to the here and the now

:)

Hey, I resemble that remark :D

Thanks Early and Chief, you are the go-to guys.

I want you to know that not only do I see you as warm, wonderful human being, I also think of you as a great ape! :)

I was holding out for the fall models and then discovered that I was on the last days of my Best Buy trade in with my 2012 phone. So, I was compelled to take the plunge.

I didn't think that the M8 was the most impressive thing in the store but I got one to seal the deal and why not with the return policy right?

Best move I ever made.

As highly rated as the M8 is, it's really underrated in my experience.

I strongly recommend it.

A lot. :D

I will be going to Best Buy next weekend to take advantage of the $99 deal on the G3 or the less-good $149 deal on the M8. I'll decide based on hands-on in the store and whatever anecdotal and anechoic ;) reports there are over the coming week about call quality
and display strength in sunlight. If I can find a unit that's not tethered to the store I might convince a salesperson to walk outside with me.

Thanks EM.

Actual use. Not just screen on to prove anything. On wifi - but actual use.

I think that the call quality is mui bueno.

Lol good luck, hope you get the best for you! :)

Btw - be sure to check out the G3 Pre-release thread.

AntimonyER found M8 reception unacceptable. I think he had a lemon or two, so watch for that. Trent Reznor found the M8 reception to be top notch. They're both on Verizon.

KOLIO tried to keep both, but opted against the G3.

There is a G3 sound issue being reported but so far it's restricted to the European 2/16 GB model.

Yep, been lurking through the G3 and M8 forums for reconnaissance and saw those discussions, both positive and negative. That's exactly why AF is such a great resource. I can hear about artifacts ahead of time and keep an eye out for them. Of course, there's never unanimity, but the value of reading the pre-release thread and newly released posts is inestimable.

Thanks for the guidance!

I put my paws on an LG G3 in NYC today. Interesting. The first this it did was it jittered into an app (lagged.) The m8 POPPED right into its programs and was brighter. It's a great phone, that G3 but I don't know if it's for me.

Steven, are you straying from the Note 4? They're saying now it will be revealed on Sept 5th at IFA Berlin, and hits carrier shelves TWO WEEKS later! I am so stoked!

:D

Nope.. But I'm a free agent. I can get what I want. I can theoretically get an iPhone. :)
