Galaxy Nexus Watering Hole

When the iPhone released as an AT&T exclusive, that was a different world. Besides, the iPhone is an anomaly. No other device is going to get people to switch carriers like the iPhone did back then. By making it exclusive to one carrier they automatically limited the potential customer base. They should have designed it to be affordable enough to sell as an unlocked device on Amazon. Not saying that would have been enough to make it successful, but it would have given it a better chance. Not really sure what the purpose of the Amazon phone is, it's already super easy to order from them, and anybody invested in the Amazon ecosystem enough to consider buying their phone probably gets all the buying suggestions they can handle through email, their Kindle, or the Amazon site/app. At least they might sell more units than the Facebook phone did lol. (another AT&T exclusive btw)

Sorry to interrupt the discussion, folks but I had to pass along a nice thing:

If you're worried about security and whether your apps are listening in to you, or using your camera unawares, John McAfee wrote this free app that scores your app based on permissions and risk. If you like, you can skip that app or uninstall it. Great little app.

:)

Okay, back to the exclusivity conversation... thank you!

After seeing the new LG watch and that thing Samsung is offering I can say without a doubt I still want the Moto 360.

I think I said Amazon would sell under 100,000 Fire phones? The numbers right now are saying about 35,000.

I think the major purpose of having a Fire phone, is to make you into a better Amazon customer. We got something similar going on here with Aliyun OS phones, to make people into better TaoBao, Tmall and Alibaba shoppers.

Oh of course, but I think the thing is, a) why is it so darn expensive?! and b) why only AT&T?
The tablets make sense in both a media consumption and purchasing device far more than a phone IMO.
Are the phones you mention that much cheaper than a top of the line smartphone?

My wife just scratched the screen on her Moto X pretty badly. :(
But, I doubt she'll get the new one if they don't do Moto Maker again (which sounds very iffy). She loves the wood back too much. :D

Wait.. Why would they not do Moto Maker? That's what makes the Moto X so good. Member that Moto Maker deal they did on black friday? People crashed Motorola's website.

The Aliyun OS phones, or Yun OS as it's sometimes known, are basic to mid-range dual-SIM phones, nothing special, one is branded as Philips however. It's the software though, Yun OS, which is a fork of Android developed by the Alibaba Group, and the phones are sold exclusively via the TaoBao and Tmall online shopping sites, both of which are owned by Alibaba. You can't sideload Android APKs into a Yun OS device, so effectively it's incompatible with it. And it is locked into just using Alibaba's online services, including AliCloud. Rather like the way that Amazon's Fire OS, is a fork of Android and is designed to make full and exclusive use of Amazon's online services.

YunOS (Chinese)

Apparently there are pirated Android apps being distributed in the Yun OS app store.
Aliyun App Store Confirmed To Be Distributing Pirated Android Apps, Many From Another Pirate Site
...but then this is China, so anything is possible.

"Yun" is Chinese Pinyin for "Cloud", in other words "Cloud OS".

EDIT:

Got me thinking, are Amazon trying to be like Apple with their Fire phone?
1) It's locked into their services.
2) It's quite expensive, over $600.
3) It's only available on one carrier, just like the iPhone was originally.

Previously Amazon's Kindle devices have always been quite reasonably priced IMO and easily available, including the Fire tablets. The Alibaba, Yun OS phones are very reasonably priced, they start at equivalent of $80, and most expensive is just under $200, and they're easily available. Which is what I think you want for a device intended to make it easier for your costumers to buy your merchandise and to consume your content. Get them in as many hands as possible.

Not gonna lie, that is one gorgeous phone. Apple is going to sell gobs and gobs of this thing, likely record breaking. :)
Good on them!

Yeah, I for one am terribly excited to see them get more profits so that they can increase their legal war chest and come and sue more Android makers for Apple patents on things that Apple didn't invent.

I also can't wait to see what new features that Apple invents for the first time ever that I'll have to ignore hearing about because I've been using them for at least two years.

A new iPhone?

Ugh. My friends are going nuts over the new iPhone 6. Wow, a phone that looks like a miniature iPad Mini. Fantastic.

In other news, I was just diagnosed with adult ADHD. That explains a lot! A doctor told my mom I had it when I was 10 or so, but my dad chalked it up to “immaturity” and “laziness” so I was never put on anything. Now I’m on Adderall and wow, is this what a normal adult feels like??!!

I guess that explains my rants and raves on the epic thread, lol.

I bet apple will announce the best and fastest iPhone to date. They will add a brand new feature never used before in any phone...NFC. And they will have invented the very first 4.7" and 5.5" phones.

Maybe they have porven the myth that increasing the size of the battery have a very close correlation to battery life, and as such, they have revolutionized the smart phone industry once again by increasing the size.

Don't forget that their screen coordinates are hard coded - the real dirty secret behind separate phone and tablet apps.

Unlike this 1080p thing I'm using that adopted its apps from a 720p predecessor that adopted the same apps from a qHD predecessor that...

Absolutely true because nowhere in my M8's name does it say the word "phone."

Does yours?

haha, the only reason they are successful is because they oversimplify the features for the sheep that use the product.

Everything has been done before, now they are taking from Android, and oversimplifying everything to reinvent it.

I bet the apple fanboys who said that anything over 5 inches is too much, they will turn and say that it's just perfect, and that Apple invented that. Same thing with NFC, if iPhone gets it, then they invented it and made it usable.

I wish all android phones had it. I would be paying for more things with my phone then.

When will we be able to have our state id and drivers licence in our phone?
