That does two things, lowers the 14 cap to $7 mil and precludes the Pat's from using the franchise tag. Rather shrewd move from both parties I'd say. I'm not sure if the NFL still has the rule where a players cap number can't change twice in a league year, but they can still renegotiate the roster bonus for next year into a long term deal without changing the 14 cap hit, and with the cap expected to go up another $10 mil next year, it could work out.
Jerry should take a lesson from the Pats on working the cap to his advantage instead of forcing himself into cap hell and having to release DMW.

Salary cap keeps the league competitive. Contrast with baseball where the big market teams just buy all of the best players. Side effect: mediocre pitchers getting $100 million contracts. (see: Homer Bailey)
