Galaxy S3 Watering Hole

For Verizon if you have one of the old unlimited data plans they charge you $20.00 a month , for everyone else there is no charge.

Wow, what a rip off. So is there really a need for a 3G tablet? My other half has her wifi tab 8.9 for use at home & work and just connects to home or work wifi, unless she's somewhere else, then she'll just go through her S3.

I might be in the market for a tablet, but I can't find anything with decent spec unless I consider Archos, possibly. But then again, it's been an expensive year so far and it's not getting any better. :/

Actually things just changed for the better or worse depending on how you look it just last week, as Verizon was feeling the pressure from our friends at the good ole FCC : http://androidforums.com/verizon/593136-fcc-tells-verizon-stop-blocking-tethering-apps.html

Don't know how many Sprint folks we have in here but did you see this?
Sprint LTE makes early appearance in Bay Area -- Engadget
If that's before any saturation has taken place, that's pretty disappointing. When I first got my Bionic back in October, LTE was great (want to say it was mid 20s down, upper teens up). That was after ~8 months of LTE being out there. Granted I believe the T-Bolt and mifis were the only other LTE devices. Now it's considerably slower since so many other LTE devices are on the grid. I hope Sprint can keep up.

Congrats to you, Kymberlin, I'm sure you're so proud!
My dad was in the Navy a while and my brother as well (ROTC certainly helps with tuition costs ;)).

Totally off topic... (but then again, this is the lounge right?)
My son just signed into the US Navy !!!!

He is picking his job today ! sniff sniff I am so proud of him!!!!

Congratulations kymberlin, that's great.

And as far as off topic goes, that is what the Watering Hole is for.

500th post of the S3 Watering Hole !! Getting a little emotional here :bawling:

500! Yea!!! :dancing:

First off, hi everyone! This is my first post in the watering hole so be kind. Looks like an interesting place to hang out. I'm currently rocking an S3 on Sprint (waiting with baited breath for them to turn LTE on in my area this month) as an upgrade from an S2 (which was my digital appendage for a year).

Caveat: I also keep an unlocked GSM Galaxy Nexus on the side for T-Mo and all the comparison goodness.

My latest endeavor is to try and use this newfangled Google Wallet I've setup. I see a trip to Wawa in my future.

My favorite addition to my S3 is the Aquarium Live Wallpaper. With the S3's native water sounds, it makes a perfect visual companion.

I have had bunches of tablets over the last 2 years, ever since my iPad1 days. I always got a WiFi-only unit and used my prepaid MiFi card if I absolutely had to have 3G service. It has never been a problem for me because I'm usually near WiFi and when I'm not I just consume the media I have on the device: music, video, e-books, games, etc. A lot of my apps work offline (Evernote, Calendar, Contacts, etc.) so I can add content then have the device autosync when it gets near WiFi.

Only time I really miss that 3G connection is when I want to use Google Maps or check the weather radar, but then my phone is handy.

Welcome to the Watering Hole ravenas.:)

I don't even have an S3 and they welcome me here. We are all a friendly lot.

Thanks!

Only thing I'm not up for is that chatter about rooting your phone. Call me a wimp, but I just can't do that to my phone. Being on Sprint I don't have too much bloatware to worry about. Is Verizon really that bad for adding on the bloatware? I never wanted to give their devices of plans a try because their prices are outrageous for data users.

Thanks!

Verizon bloated my GNex, yeah, they bloat everything. Luckily with ICS you can freeze apps without root. Just go into Settings | Apps | Bloat and you should see a disable button.

Thanks!

I know Pup threw in his .02, but I'll add mine.
The OG Droid had very little, it was so close to stock (I think AmazonMP3 was the only one). When I got my Bionic there was a TON. Well, ended up rooting and freezing all those apps to get rid of them. Gave the phone to my wife who was getting furious with the outdated ROM and bad radios. Had to unroot and install a leaked ICS ROM. All that bloat came right back.
Now she complains about that. I'm done messing with her phone. ;)

Thanks!

Well, I just un-rooted my phone (for pretty much the same reason I rooted it to start with... which is because I can :p)

Now I will just use it and stop fiddling with it (tired of having to set up everything from scratch every time :p)

Hi and welcome, greetings, grab a beer and all that? Nuts? Yes, yes, you probably are, to be here :p

Yea, I'm not that fussed about a tablet on 3G. Wifi wi do me, as I already teather my ereader through my S3 so ill just do the same with a tablet. I'm just on the hunt for a decent spec tab, not a silly little 1ghz thing. Preferably something more powerful than my phone.

*Sticks head in*

Well, there is now a blood red one in the house. It took some convincing but my sister ditched her iPhone 4s. I did not give her much of a choice. I bought it for her :)

Good work aj, Glad to see you in another Watering Hole.;)

I just had the thought: I have bought 3 phones in the last 6 weeks:

My mom a Galaxy note
My self a HTC one X
My Sister the s3

And I am still thinking about replacing the nexus as my contract is up in 3 months. I wonder if they will give me an early upgrade. But, oh, man! I got to pay full price for the device if I want to keep the unlimited 4G and unlimited tethering. Though I don't use it. It would likely be cheaper in the long run to just do 3 or 5gig since verizon can't stop me from tethering like they can if you have unlimited data. Groan.
