I agree with you.
One tradition my dad had yearly was the blackeyed peas every new year. So... so... so gross to me. (Not the band, although not my type either)

We do that as well, but trust me not even cheese can make blackeyed peas taste better.

Ok its time.. My daughter is 18 months old.. Not one single day in her life has she ever spent with only me.. Until today. From morning to night its been all me.. I am beyond proud of her for being so cool with me. *tear* My lil big girl.

We had to do that too. 3 of the little buggers. Then I got old enough to learn to just swallow them like a pill. Worked so much better.

Southern cooking is still pretty foreign to me having grown up in MA. But, I did live in NC for a few years. Love that state! (got married there too 
).
Last summer we got some local, organic okra and I sliced it quite thin and put it (raw) on a pizza with corn and cherry tomatoes as a special at work. Some folks were really hesitant but it was pretty damn delicious.

Lol... I was raised with a completely different cuisine than I currently fancy. It's so funny actually Ma and Pop are from Missouri. My husband, Mississippi. So I'm order to stay married I learned how to cook for him. I must admit, although it's good food, it's horrible for you. So I cook it a few times a month but that's it. I think I'm pretty well versed in many cuisines.
Oh, and homegrown, thin cut okra that has been soaked in tomatoes (gets rid of the slime) is the best....especially with blackeyed peas! And don't forget the cornbread

My lady mostly grew up in NC and loves fried okra but I agree the majority of the stuff out there is all breading.

Yeah, I have a Paula Dean cookbook (She is from Savannah after all), and the common thread through all those recipes is lots of either A. Butter or B. Mayo. You ever want to unhealthify a food? Make her broccoli casserole.

Anti, true "southern cooking" is horrible. I try to cut where I can. So thanksgiving I will smoke turkey legs and put that in my greens, instead of ham hocks, etc...., You can enjoy the more traditional comfort foods just tweek um a bit.

I love that woman. And if you ever get a chance to see her do her stage show, not cooking, she is awesome. A mouth like a sailor and doesn't sugar coat her life. She tells you exactly what happened and makes no excuses. As for her recipes, I have to skip right past anything with mayo but the butter ones are damn yummy.

I personally can not eat anything that the name of it sounds like sandpaper. I have tried, but I much prefer oatmeal myself. Most people I find like either/or but not both... Funny kinda.
