[Games] GAMEVIL

When... is... it... coming?

I honestly hate announcements like this. THERE WILL BE AN AWESOME GAME FOR YOUR PHONE... IN THE FUTURE!

1 week?
1 month?
1 year?

DIE!

From Gamevil at Facebook:
"Illusia for Android will be released very soon - sooner than we'd thought. 'Nuff said!"

Sounds optimistic enough? I hope by the end of this week, but probably it will take a bit longer.

Seems like a most amazing game by the way! A little bit of Wonder Boy, which I love deeearly.

I never said anything about 3D graphics, nor did I compare it to other games. I did however say the game would be more appealing to me if they were a bit more polished (HD for example), which I refered to by mentioning the add they have posted.

I would gladly play any action rpg with SNES style graphics and a good story and skill/stats system than a 3D rpg that rivals WOW with a shallow story and poor character development system. If you are looking for a game that stuns you with graphics and loses the gameplay likely you shouldn't be looking for RPG games.
Pretty much this. Everyone that praises Final Fantasy VII as the best game ever needs to take off the rose-tinted glasses and realize that it isn't even the best Final Fantasy game.

I would be interested to see what people would say if they revamped the FF games from NES and SNES to be equal to the graphics available today, then I'm sure many would realize those are better games.

Part of the problem with modern RPGs is the dev doesn't invest enough into the story and makes up for it with eye candy. I personally like Gamevil's games I grew up playing D&D and MUDs where there are no graphics, Gamevil's games do a good job telling a story and allows for character development as well. When compared to many other RPG games for android the graphics are much better but that is not what I look for in a RPG game.

problem is , most games companies started focusing on getting high end graphics but forgetting about gameplay [talking about consoles]
that's why phone games are getting the hype now , simple easy to play with simple graphics .. at least that's what I think

VI is better. Right? That's what you meant?
VI is the best. IV is better. Heck, even IX was a better game than VII (in my opinion). VII mainstreamed RPGs, but it was not the best Final Fantasy game. Not even a close contest.

Looks like maple story to me... Side scrolling RPG aren't exactly my cup tea, but it doesn't look like bad game. Android games like these, and others seem be way over priced. You go to app store from apple these types of games are 1-10 dollars with average being 2 bucks. I don't understand why these devs charge so much for there games on android. I saw a final fantasy tactics like game for 15 dollars, Really!? Most iPad games dont go for that much. I have a motorola xoom and at least the samurai game is priced right, but monster game is 10 bucks sheesh.

You are talking about spectral souls which is a PSP port. I have no issue paying 5 bucks for a phone game. I haven't purchased spectral souls due to the sd memory requirements, but $15 for a game really isn't that bad. How many games can you buy new for a console for $15 or less. It costs money to make a game, it cost money for hosting, it cost money register a domain, it cost money to market...

Kinda silly to compare phone games to console games. So angry birds should be compared to games like halo lol? They aren't in same market so lets keep that comparison out this. Your sure right it does cost money to do all those things that you've said. With that being said how is it that apple developers can keep there cost to consumer down, but android devs can't? For instance final fantasy games on apple cost about 9 dollars, I'm sure they accrue the same expenses yet there product is less expensive. Spectral Souls isn't some high end graphic extensive game it's 2D sprites in 3D world.

There's plenty of android games that look better and cost less. Monster madness would be great buy at 5 dollars, but at 10 it falls at way side. Most people if it's above 5 dollars hit the wall. I've bought a lot games from apple for my ipod touch just because they had a lot polish. Infinity blade comes to mind, and I don't see any android games yet that compare, and that was more than 5 bucks at time. To bring this back to the topic at hand this game looks like in the "android" market will be over priced, but if was in apple would only cost about 2-3 dollars. Maybe it's because at moment there's a lot quality games on apple side, and android games of this quality aren't as abundant so prices are higher.

Edit: I'd also like to add I love final fantasy VII, and it's funny that even know people hate on its success. I thought it had a great story, and was well executed. I don't think because was first 3D game made anyone like the game anymore than it's 2D predecessors. I'm also same guy who liked FF 8, because it was a romance more than it was "saving the world" FF game.

I wouldn't say it is silly to compare phones and consoles. Expecially handheld consoles as they use simmilar technology and with phones getting more and more powerful and innovations happening quicker than the handheld consoles I expect the future of handheld games will keep shifting towards mobile phones over consoles. A quick search and there are still many places selling the PSP version of spectral souls for more than $15 and every review I have seen states the android version is superior.

The cost for android games is up the the dev, if they charge $15 as opposed to $5 they can sell 1/3 as much to make the same amount. A strategic RPG is not everyone's cup of tea so they know that it will not be the next angry birds, however for an android user looking for a good strategic RPG they can search for reviews of this game and they know what they are getting prior to paying.

I have no idea why developers charge different for apps on different mobile markets. It is not always that the android version is more costly than the iphone version, see angry birds.

This is a really interesting point. I think the issue with the Android Market is there are lot of devs that haven't made iPhone games before (much easier to release an Android than iPhone app), so they're still figuring out exactly what consumers are after. Case in point - my RPG - I actually wish I'd spent less time on the animation system than I did, because at the end of the day because it doesn't look like the latest FF or WoW, people downrate the graphics anyway.

I think unless you're an established games studio with a decent cash pile to spend on graphics, you should try and minimize your graphics costs and go with simple styles and decent gameplay. It's just very hard for devs to make that call though because everyone knows how much people want games that look amazing :)

This is true sadly many end users will be more than happy to pay $5 for a flashy shallow game and complain when a game has a good play system with lesser graphics even if the game is free. They don't realize what it takes to create a game or that many android developers are one person or a small team instead of a large company that produces commercial games.

Can't blame them though. The industry is responsible for touting graphics as the most important feature of a game since 3D acceleration cards came out. Around the same time I stopped buying so many games, incidentally.

Another issue is that while some Android phones are incredibly powerful and capable of rendering graphics comparable to consoles, most aren't, and some won't even get past the loading screen. This is a problem that iPhone devs don't have, so people see the games you get on iPhone and expect the same on their Android phone, where the range of graphics processing power is much greater.

"Managing expectations" is always hard, from both the consumer and the developer's sides :) The phones are only going to get more powerful though.

It would make so much of a difference to me if you didn't use an iphone as your marketing material.

It makes me feel like you've simply ported over an iphone game quickly to make a buck.

So, I'm a few hours into the game now. It's charming and has a proper story line, something most phone games don't have. The graphics are cute, colourful, vibrant, the sounds are funny and fits perfectly.
Many different kind of monsters and gear is a huge plus for me! I also appreciate that you can see the equipment you put on your character while playing!

The downsides are,
it's very repetitive. For me, it's no concern, I like hack & slash games, but people might complain about this.
So far it's also way too easy, I've never even been near death once. I hope and think this will change further in. :)

Some more troublesome issues are the controls. Often they're good, but more than sometimes, I find the dual touch failing. Like walking forward and attacking a monkey might result in the forward button not responding so you have to let go of it and press again. Not a big deal it sounds, but after a while, this gets tiresome. It's also problematic to perform proper jumps; the character is a little unmanageable in the air; you often jump too far or too short.
I also occur occasional slowdown when more than five enemies are at screen at once.

But in the whole, it's a great game. Good money spent! And that's what I'm going to tell the people in my Market review later today.
Thanks for developing this!
