If you are interested in getting apps for free (that you may normally have to pay for), check out Getjar. Here is a review:

GetJar Gold Jumps Out of Beta

There is a nice selection of apps that you can get for free; it is an interesting business model. The site appears quite legit; I hope it succeeds.

For those not clicking the link because they think it may to to a warez site, it's not. ;) Our own Phandroid parent site picked it up and explains the GetJar "money to devs" scheme used by GetJar.

mvaness, I've moved this great news thread of yours out of the device area where it was, to the Android Lounge, where more will see it. ;)

So GetJar are Ok now? I remember when they hosted Java apps, many years ago. Some were spyware or malware, but probably not their fault. I'll check this out, cheers

GetJar is a very nice site. I've downloaded a couple apps from them. I even got notifications when new version are released just like the market and Amazon send. My understanding is GetJar may not always get updates from the devs as quickly as the Market or Amazon will.

Getjar also has an app for your smart phone. I used it to check out paid apps to see if its something I want. Mostly for those who don't offer a free app and a Pro app. I check out the app and see if its something that will work the way I expect it to or to see what it can and cannot do. If I like an app I actually purchase the app or go to the developers site and make a donation. Most of which gives me access to use the "Full" edition. I think its a great way to find and use apps you normally have to pay for first before you can try it.

I wasn't aware the devs were being paid is there something I can read to explain how it works? I would still encourage to donate to the devs

It's probably a similar model to what Megaupload were trying to do with Megabox before the government decided to go on a power trip and shut them down.

Get Jar has always been fine. Spyware is a problem on any unregulated app market, including the official Android Market.

Did you have to do anything to make update notifications start appearing?

Have you tried it?

yes, there are some nice apps. I am really liking be weather and I use its widgets for my home. Replaced beautiful widgets. productivity apps, games, etc. Like I said, it think there is something for everyone.

Getjar is pretty awesome. Tons of free paid apps, i've used it for quite a while, and it seems just as good/if not better than the Amazon Appstore. I downloaded Samurai II and i'm really enjoying it.

I typically check Getjar, and the Amazon Appstore everyday for new apps.

Been using it for awhile, it's a legit site. I've never gotten any notifications for updates, though. I don't even know how to update apps from there. Getjar has been around forever, probably longer than Android.

I also have downloaded a few apps from getjar. I have yet to get an update for any of them however.
