Getting HTC Hero in 3 days, what should I do first!!!!???

Yeh I haven't decided if I'm going to root it. First I will play around with it, figure out how to use it, then worry about rooting it or not.

- I heard that a new update for the Hero may have fixed the issue with the default SMS app. Is that true?

- I mentioned I plan on putting all my MP3's on a microSD. What format does the partition that holds there MP3's need to be in? Can it just be a FAT32 partition? Will there be any problems playing the media from the card?

2 days and counting....i'm sooooo excited!!!

I'm not sure if there is an official fix for that SMS bug yet, but seeing as it's a pretty serious issue, I can't imagine HTC will take long in getting a solution out there, if there isn't already.

As for your memory card, yes, FAT32 will be fine. The only reason for partitioning it is for apps2SD since the apps need to be stored on an ext3 formatted partition.

I have the Sprint version of the Hero. Just got it two days ago (ditching the Palm Pre (I missed Android too much)).

I am a Linux user - not just on my phone, but on my personal computer. You can use Ext3 or FAT or FAT32 or whatever you want and your MP3's should work just fine.

The phone came with Android 1.5. Version 1.6 is not out yet for Sprint. I have heard that it may be within the next week or two, but you know how rumors can be (I hope!).

I'm still debating on whether or not I want to root my phone too. As of now, the phone works great and has plenty of space, so I have no plans for rooting yet.

The battery life on the Sprint Hero is excellent! The first things you should do are as follows:

Let the phone drain the battery down completely until it shuts off. Then do a full (and uninterrupted) recharge - maybe while you sleep. This will train the battery and the phone to work together and will extend the battery life (it's usually good to do this 2 or 3 times with a Lithium battery like this).

Next, install Hansent SMS or Chomp SMS. After you have installed it, go into your contacts and click on someone's name and click the option to send them an SMS. A pop up window will show asking which SMS app to use - default or the one you installed. Select the one you installed and check the box.

These two things will make your battery one of the last things on your mind.

Also, make sure that you go through the setup and run through the keyboard wizard to train it how you type.

Thanks for the details kasl, I will be sure to do those things you mentioned. Excellent suggestions! :-) Being a first time Android user, I wasn't sure how I was going to use the other SMS app as default, thanks for explaining that.

1 day remaining!!!! I have my list of apps to try, and things to do right when I get the phone. Anything else from anyone that I should do right away?

Change the scene so it fits you. When I first got mine (a few weeks ago), the default HTC scene was not for me. It was only until I removed the music page, calendar, and sports stuff, did I feel satisfied. I then added the facebook app to the mainpage, gmail, my girlfriend. And created a fun app page, consisting of Papi Jump, Scoreboard, Sudoku, Movies, and the weather.

Edit: when you first get the phone, try out the camera, it is only a 5mp camera, but that's amazing for phones now a days.

D-Day is today...the wait is absolutely killing me!!! 4 hours and counting until I go get my device...of course it will take an hour to get everything switched and activated and all that garbage at the Sprint store, but at least I will be able to hold it...:-)

Wow, after all my research, I am still pretty overwhelmed. So far got ChomSMS setup and set as default. Note sure how to disable the built in messenger...

Trying to figure everything out right now....yay!!

He got the Sprint Hero. It doesn't come in white, but it will have a lot of colored cases.

I did get the Sprint Hero, so I have the dark gray one. I already got ChompSMS on there and a few other things taken care of.

Thanks for the link to the voice mail fix, did the upgrade, haven't got any voice mail's since, so we will see.

Really like it so far. My microSD comes in the mail today, so I will be able to load all my .mp3's on it and see how the Hero does with playback and call handling and such. Thanks for all the help and suggestions...I'm sure I will have more questions!!! :-)

Searched the forum a bit for this, and couldn't find anything on it that was what I am experiencing. So I will ask. When I am syncing contacts with my Google contacts, I am not syncing all contacts, just My contacts and the selected groups. However, on my phone, I don't get all the contact groups that I have created in gMail. I have, Friends, Family, CoWorkers, Church, School, Starred in Android (yay). However, the only groups that show up are Church and School. I'm not sure why. I have contacts in the other Friends, Family and Coworkers group, but for some reason those groups aren't showing up on my droid. Any ideas?

Also, I am geting 100% Awake time right now....I'm not sure how to fix this. Did some searching, and I have Task Panel X installed, and it shows some stuff running, but I already verified Messages wasn't on and I"m not sure why it is always awake. Help please

As far as I know, HTC's default message app is what is causing the 100% wake time. Have you made sure to remove the HTC Message widget as well as made sure it's been killed in the task manager. As I dont have the Sprint version, I can't really experiment to see what works or not.

I cut the phone awake time down to 18%. If I turn location on will it be at 100%? Is there a list of known apps that run the phone ay 100%?

BTW, this posted from Hero YAY!

I would suggest Handcent over Chomp any day. Handcent has MMS support , and Chomp does not. Make sure you disable the stock messaging app and the Auto Retrieval and Notifications or you will end up with double notifications. Also, the "fix" for the battery drain by using Handcent does not resolve the battery issue. There are countless threads on this forum and others and the fix seems to work for some people but not all. I have called Sprint and told them I am not paying more for my new plan until this issue is resolved.

Hey, I just got my hero today, and don't know if you found a way around the buggy thing with the default Google Contact groups... the Friends, Family, and CoWorkers ones. They don't show up for me either. Goofup on Google's part, I'm guessing.

I think it's working as designed. Like All Contacts, these groups never show on the handset and appear not to be sync'd deliberately.

I find it hard to believe it's done on purpose. Why *wouldn't* someone want their Family, Friends, and CoWorkers visible in groups in phone contacts? Oh well...

Also, yes lekky, I've already read through the guide, and it's been very helpful. Thanks for reminding me to check back and see what if I missed anything though! :)
