Getting ready to ditch my Hero/Android

Not like I care too much about when 2.1 comes, we were in fact promised an upgrade.. Sprint officially announced the moment and hero WILL receive 2.1

This is not made up, it is fact.

Again, I'm not advocating one way or another, just thought you should know

Again, that is not a promise. Nowhere in your contract does it state that Sprint is responsible to deliver software updates for mobile devices. They are doing it b/c they want to and we should be grateful.

This doesn't help your current issue, but Google knows that there is a fragmentation issue with Android OS versions. They are taking an approach to separate their core applications such as gmail / gcal / etc. from the Android kernel (read brain for non tech folks) so that users will be able to just update google maps etc. without having to upgrade their OS version.

This is a ways off, but you mentioned that it was a mess and I just wanted you to know that Google knows this and is working on it.

We should be grateful? Haha, im sorry but I just don't agree with that statement one bit. Not trying to start an argument, but personally I would prefer Sprint have absolutely nothing to do with the update. The only thing sprint is good for in the process is adding their software, delaying release and making the update "official". We have 2.1 ROMS over at XDA that are going to be better than the final release anyway. And if you wouldnt be upset with Sprint announcing the update and never releasing it then I am baffled. That says a lot for the reputation of the company.

I feel that sprint officially announcing the phones receiving 2.1 is in fact a promise. If they had no intention in doing so, then why in the world are they publishing such information?

I have a feeling mbell is an apple fanboy. first post just randomly inserted the 4.0 downgrade, i meant 'upgrade' apple announced. nothing is a big mess. Google or sprint. sprint will update when they update. in the mean time, go enjoy a few custom Roms that even a **** like me can figure out how to do. if your really set on not having an ounce of patience please send me your old news hero. I will even pay shipping cost :-D just pm me your finally decision, k.

Bow down to the mighty android God...you shall be grateful for the crumbs we throw your way...lol

BTW anyone know how one can root the cellular south cdma hero and have everything work yet?

Why did they not address this from the beginning?

Go to xda developers forum and search, they have a thread for cellular south, I think.

if it wasnt because YouTube doesnt work on the current OS, I wouldnt even care about the 2.1 update...

It does work you just need to go to the actual mobile website. And BTW I have a VZW Droid Eris (basically the hero) and 2.1... and no its not the official one it leaked but guess what IT WORKS... even now with 2.1 i still have to go to m.youtube to view some content with the mobile app.

Ok, since you are so happy with 1.5 and its outdated apps with no access to current ones, you will be happy staying on 1.5 even when 2.1 is released right?

I like both Android and Apple, some people call that being open minded, around here it's called blasphemy

I must agree with you on this acp. There do happen to be some things I like about the iPhone, and there are things I don't like about it. Don't get me wrong, I seriously doubt that I would ever invest in one though. I'm Android all the way. Lol. Being open minded is a good thing. That's how great ideas are shared.

They do, but too many things will not work after rooting for it to be of any benefit. ie camera and 3g issues. And it is not like a normal root, it is quite complicated and involved, more so than the average sprint root. With no way to get my phone back to square one, i would not dare try it on a phone that cannot be backed up like my iphone could, you could not brick an iphone because of the backup, it backed up everything, completely.

I gotta have my phone fr my work and another 500.00 just would not sit well with me just to try and get my phone to function normally.

I personally will not get 2.1 as soon as it's available. 1.5 works perfect for me, so I'll read here for a week or 2 to see if it's worth the switch.

Not to sound like a jerk, but "if it's worth it" ???? Seriously it is worth it. I could never get the sprint nav to do what I wanted it to. I used the google nav today for the first time, and that alone is worth having 2.1 for. Youtube works flawlessly, the market is better, I could go on and on. Point is, It is well worth the switch, or they would have let all the phones keep 1.5 for ever and never upgraded. 2.1 was made to run cdma. 1.5 was patched to work with cdma. It is worth the switch.

Like I said, not trying to be a jerk, I'm just sayin...

I used Sprint Nav the other day and it worked perfect, but I have GPS in my car anyways so I rarely use it. Youtube also works fine for me, I use the browser, not the widget. I even download videos and songs from Youtube with tubedownloader. My phone has basically 0 problems. Why would I want to jump on an update with a bunch of bugs that I'm not dealing with right now? If it comes out and there aren't alot of reported problems I'll happily update. But if I see thread after thread of problems with 2.1 like I saw in the Droid forums when they first got it, I may wait awhile.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I've been running a 2.1 ROM for a few weeks now. But I have to say this. I used Google Nav for the first time the other night and it didn't perform so well for me. I was headed to a friend that I'd never visited at home. When I got somewhat close to his neighborhood google nav was telling me to turn left on a street but the name was off. So I drove a bit and did a u-turn. This time when I got to the same street it was telling me to turn on, it had the correct name. That was weird. Also, it then took me to the intersection of the street my friend lived on, but it told me I had arrived at my destination. Turns out my friend lived a good 4 or 5 blocks from where I was. I never had an issue with Sprint nav. I had GPS on, so it should have been more accurate than that. Other than that though, 2.1 has been rock solid.

Fair enough. I could never get nav to work correctly, mms NEVER showed the pics, youtube worked through the browser sometimes.... I just had a bunch of issues and 2.1 totally fixed every one of them.

Wow, what a discussion. I've been a Sprint customer over six years. I wouldn't change for any phone, period. Me and my wife have had our Hero's three months and really like and enjoy them. We upgraded to the most technically advanced phone that Sprint offiered. If we get a firmware upgrade fine, if not fine. I always know that a new phone will outdated in about six months after I buy it. The Hero does quite a lot more than I need it to. Also it is always surprising me with it's "Smart" technology. I did have my Sprint store clean the dust out from under the screen a few weeks ago. So what, it's an issue, they did a very good joh, and it was at no charge. Right now I feel that the Hero is the best phone available 1.5 or not. TC

That's weird. I used it today and had one bar of 1x service where I was. Literally in a hollow back in the woods on a dirt path...I heard banjos. Any way it was dead nuts perfect in its function. I couldn't believe how accurate it was. I was totally sold on it right then.

I don't know how to take screen shots on the phone itself, not rooted btw, so I used my webcam:

herou.jpg

Mine doesn't work when I go to the mobile site for YouTube, and I click on a link after I get the results for whatever I'm searching for, I always get an error whether I use stock or the Opera Mini browser. However the links do open on the Dolphin browser, but you need to use the YouTube app or the HTC Flash player and wont load either.... I also downloaded the Tube Downloader app and sometimes wont load the videos when I click on preview... and yes, I already tried WiFi, but my WiFi network is not as fast... so videos get stuck and sometimes wont load... btw, sometimes facebook, doesn't even work... the rest of the sites seem to work fine...

Problems like this are why I'm leary of even getting updated to 2.1. Like I said already, Youtube works fine. Same with Facebook, I don't use apps for either of them. I've never had a problem with SMS or MMS or email.

The one problem my Hero does have is dust under the screen. After I put my Otterbox on, it seems to have stopped acumulating any more. With all the problems I've seen on here I won't take my phone in to be replaced by a refurb or even a new unit, I'll deal with the bit of dust I have.
