Gingerbread impressions/tips/problems NON ROOTED STOCK ONLY

Fast boot is cool, and since there is also a "restart" option that shuts the phone down properly, I'm tempted to leave this option enabled should I ever want to use it, however in the settings menu, the fact boot option says "disable to use some market apps" and I wonder what functionality I am losing by leaving it turned on.

I honestly can't think of a reason I would hibernate my phone. The only time I ever turn it off is to reboot it, so if there is some downside to the fast boot option, I'll leave it off, even if it is a neat party trick.

Android Guru here. I initially had the same thoughts on "whats the point" regarding fast boot. I guess there are times when you might want to shut off your phone for battery reasons. Still, hibernating does use a tiny bit of power (compared to actually being off) so I don't think it's worth it.

The most likely reason for the market apps warning, though worded pretty poorly, is that Android fires broadcast intents that many apps listen for upon the phone finishing a boot. This hibernate mode probably doesn't fire that intent, as the phone didn't truly boot.

Thus, any app that needs to do something based off of the phone first turning on probably won't do it.

Just a quick word of advice for anyone who uses the stock Alarm app...you have to re-enter your alarms after the update! Just playing with mine and realized the alarms I had set were all gone. I don't recall this happening with the Froyo update, but perhaps it did.

Otherwise, so far so good with my update.

Apparently I'm the only one who didn't have this happen. My alarms WERE turned off, or unchecked, but they were still there.

What changes can I expect in my phone with gingerbread?

This is unfortunate. Anyone know another way to get Swype to correct a word?

I just hold down on the screen and it gives me an option to "select word", "select all" or "input method".

I'm not exactly sure what the issue is.

No problem with Netflix works flawless on 3G and wifi. Loads noticeably faster.

I notice that the "Silent Mode" and "Vibration Mode" menu options are gone from the menu that pops up when you hold down the power button. WHY would they have removed these? I use them all the time!

Now my Evo displays the Voicemail icon in the info bar. I cannot get the symbol to turn off. I have checked my voice mail, and there are no messages. I powered down, nothing,, I did a battery pull to no avail. Very weird.

My phone crashed shortly after update and defaulted to sense. I had to clear a default before I could get LP to start but my wallpaper won't change, and my gallery doesn't work. Not liking so far. I smell a factory reset coming.

I'm just I guess I feel let down, droid x for the newest version of. Blur and while im not expecting to get sense 3.0 atleast 2.0 just so it can be a refreshimg expierence. Im not totally complaning because thr speed boost is amazingly better then before. No more forced closing of sense. But i guess maybe thats their way of trying to avoid, hundreds of people pissed the sense is always crashing and the whole "hero" 2.1 update thing again.Who knoes maybe they will give us a maintance update with the new sense included? Who knows why they would leave out probably the most anticapted part of a htc update. its all good HTC you still delivered a pretty good update, half assed six month update but you did it . Cheers to you . Side note. While typing this on my "newly " updated keyboard it really sucks using it.

When I was rooted with unrevoked 3 and installed 2.2 with the PC31IMG thing (sorry if i got some of the letters wrong just goin off horrible memory here lol)

when I pulled down my notifications bar I could: turn on/off gps, turn on/off flashlight, airplane mode, bluetooth, and i think one other thing cant remember right now

AND also the battery in the notification bar showed the percent the battery had remaining..
does anyone know if these features will show up in a stock software update in the future?

Yes you do need to have that version before updating

Ive noticed when using the stock web browser animated files like gif files don't play like they did before 2.3 update. Anyone else notice this or am I the only one having this problem?

That's right! Support for the fastest wireless protocol that the Evo has always had is no longer there. Some things about this update may be faster but my browsing sure isn't.

This is a downgrade. We've lost a spec (b/g/n). It's an outrage!

People who are having issues with Swype, just put the cursor in the center of the word and hit the Swype button, it brings up the Swype menu to change/add/delete word from Swype. It's actually much easier now.

So far I like the update. Some of the applications run faster, and I installed it on my bosses phone and he says it's working wonders for the battery.

Oh, also, the home screens rotate to landscape mode now . . .FINALLY!

I was thinking howcome they would give us such a watered down update of gingerbread especially with no new additions to sense or even a new keyboard!? Well I am wondering if we only got half of the update because we weren't patient? I'm probably wrong which wouldn't surprise me but just maybe there is a part they left out for the full ota update on the 6th?! Idk but there is a few minor positives to the update but other then that I'm not very pleased as I thought i would be 6months ago when I first heard evo might get gingerbread !!!!!

I hope this isn't true. I haven't used wifi yet cause I'm at work and I don't know what letter my Apple Airport Extreme Basestation uses.
