Gizmodo asks the Question of the Day: iPhone 4 or HTC EVO

As of the time of this post, the EVO is holding it's own at 44% to the iPHone's 51%. Given the millions of rabid Apple fan-boys who normally vote anything with the Apple logo, this is mighty impressive.

The one saving grace for the iPhone 4 would have been flash support, but they decided against adding that. Face it, even if HTML5 is the future of the internet, in the current state of the economy, a company would have to be stupid to pay a webmaster to convert a flash site to HTML5... Otherwise, the iPhone 4 release information was rather disappointing.

Also, I think Apple is definitely thinking that Android is a serious contender now... Why would they have added "Bing" to iOS4 otherwise? Apple, M$, and Google have been at each others throats for a while now, so why the sudden change of heart? I believe it's the "The enemy of my enemy, is my friend" mentality now.

To answer the original question, Evo... And yes, I voted. :D

I just can't deal with the keyboard lag. I've tried other keyboards and no use. Wiped phone twice and no resolution.

Have you tried Swype? It's absolutely going to change the way you type. And turn off haptic feedback.
I have an iPhone 3GS, an iPad, htc hero and an evo is being delivered today and let me tell you, I prefer swype on outdated(but tweaked out) Hero to keyboards on iPhone and iPad. I will try to seek out swype for eve as soon as I get it

It's hard to chose the iPhone 4 over the EVO, even if it were to come to Sprint, when the EVO beats all the specs of the iPhone besides battery life (small difference), resolution (even so, the EVO kills it there with a much bigger screen) and maybe build quality.

Why would they put that nice 940x640 resolution on a 3.5" screen?? that is probably the dumbest decision they made on this phone.

iPhone: no HDMI, no 4G, no expandable memory, no battery replacement, no kickstand, no flash, no hotspot, much smaller screen. no thanks
This is a totally biased opinion IMHO,
hdmi on a smartphone is a gimmick since phones can't playback high res movies,
iPhone internal memory is probably way faster than cheap sdhc cards that people buy,
I still haven't heard of acceptable flash implementation on. Android that extends beyond simple video playback
Hotspot is doable by jail breaking the phone and installing myWi, just like putting wifi tether on rooted android
Screen has yet to be seen by most of us and judging by an IPS display on my Ipad it's going to be beautiful.
I haven't used Evo yet so I can't judge the value of the kickstand, but it certainly cannot be a deal breaker on a smartphone device
And furthermore, Att network is bad at the moment, but we,re talking about a device. You can't argue that iPhone experience is not silky smooth and that developers support the app store by providing better apps because they are able to easier monetize their product than through google market. Better payoffs equal better value product

Once you get passed the Steve jobs marketing bs....its a decent upgrade....that being said, it would take a modern day miracle for me to ever give a dollar to the purely evil and craptastic at&t.....

i think the new build is setting up for failure because both sides of the iphone 4 is entirely glass w. a steel border. if that device gets dropped, bumped into another hard object the user is gonna be diggin deep into pocket for a new one. considering how fragile it is (unless it is thick durable glass) insurance shouldve been offered this time around. otherwise there will be a lot of users in apple in an uproar AGAIN trying to get a new device. i really respect what apple has done but could they once think about their consumers and not their stock and payroll?

Apple said that they used glass compound that is 50 times stronger than plastic, so it should withstand more abuse than your average plastic (hint, hint) smartphone. Then again who knows which type of plastic they compared against.
Basically we'll just have to wait and see for actual devices to compare

Dude, everybody has got an agenda, you just have to pick one that doesn't interferes with yours

Someone said holy war .... i lol'd, bottom line, im not leaving sprint because I like their plans, cost and customer service also I feel no need to justify my purchases.

yeah.. but????

but if you really bang a plastic part.. it will dent..but stay whole for the most part....

what would happen with a bad bang on glass?
I guess only time will tell??

will there be an Insurance plan on this iphone 4?

If you want mediocrity, take a look in the android app store.

How many iPhone users do you think look at Giz or Engadget? not many, it's not that kind of platform. Android is though - it's for people who like to tinker.

To continue the car theme (although the universe and his dog knows this is a subject lost on most Americans):

The iPhone is like a Porsche. It's aspirational, looks nice, it's expensive and is easy to use. It's not that fast (comparatively), or comfortable, and you can't really play with the suspension settings to make it go faster. If it breaks, you need to use Porsche parts to fix it. The interior is beautiful, and it's design is iconic.

Android is like a kit car/track car. It's for the enthusiast. It's MUCH faster than the Porsche on a track, and you can tweak the hell out of it. It's not so happy in the hands of a normal driver and needs plenty of attention. It's a performer, and you must be willing to put the time in if you want ownership to be a pleasure and not a chore.

Some people like to spend their time tinkering with their track car - and this is why they bought it. Joe Public likes that it's noisy and fast, but wouldn't necessarily want to own one. The Porsche owner is smug. They just want to drive it around and not really push it very hard. It's nice to look at, and ordinary people want one. Your granny could drive it, no problem. The Porsche owner bought the car for the badge - they have never lifted the bonnet.

The Track car owner is happy. They have what they want.
The Porsche owner is happy too. They have what they want also.

THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE!!!!!

I don't mean to call you out specifically, because many many other people out their are using your same analogy, but it is completely wrong.

Android is made to be customizable, however the only thing you can do out of the box is change the homescreen and lockscreen wallpaper, change around your apps, and have widgets.

iPhone allows you (ios4) allows you to change the homescreen and lockscreen wallpaper, change around your apps, however no widgets.

Rooting an android device is the "tinkering" that all of you are talking about is the same thing as jailbreaking an iPhone.

Everyone thinks that rooting can do more than jailbreaking.

JB an iPhone lets you do anything.

the iPhone is running froyo for go sake
YouTube - Android 2.2 Froyo running on the iPhone

The iPhone has ran htc sense, android 1.5 and you can change the lockscreen to the android style, you can add widgets, you can multitask, you can do anything you want with iPhone just like you can with android.
Except with the iPhone you can do more.

All of you are saying that the iPhone is locked down, all you have to do is jailbreak it and it can do more than a rooted android device, and I can prove it by showing many links to things a jailbroken iPhone can do.

Also the Jailbreaking process it one click, download the version for windows and click make it rain, and boom your done.

Android has many different devices and requires alot more steps.

This analogy is completely wrong.

Out of the box android lets you customize alot more.

But after rooting/jailbreaking the device

the iPhone has been customized and changed more than any android device to date.

Add this to the argument.
Service provider:
AT&T: Capping data usage
Sprint: 4G and not capping data usage

Durability:
Iphone: Some serious issues on durability
EVO: Too early to tell

:D

Why are we talking about iPhones again? I believe there are iPhone forums for that.
I sympathize, but iPhone is top dog, and everyone will be compared to the top dog until it is replaced. Android is beyond up and coming, many feel Apple has taken notice and are on the defensive.

What gets me is everyone still compares hardware to iPhone. And while Evo is chock fulluva delicious specs (I love mine!), I still give it to Apple for their peerless hardware design.

But Android isn't about the hardware, it's about the OS. And Android is generations ahead of iOS in terms of cloud integration. No iTunes needed to do anything with your phone. No $100/year for an inferior moblieme cloud. This is why the ifans are blind to the shortcomings of iOS, they are still hung up on hardware design and smooth scrolling UI's. This is why Android has such momentum. And this is why, if Apple doesn't wake up and change gears quickly and drastically, Android will soon be top dog.

The funny thing is, you see ALOT of iPhone devs and users trying to get Android on their phones but have you ever once seen an Android user trying to put the iPhones OS on his Android? :p

I think that if the new antenna works as Apple hopes, there may be less complaints about AT&T's network.
I just jumped ship from AT&T. I have to tell you, with or without the iphone they SUCK. I was using a blackberry curve and then a razr. In both instances dropped calls, getting voice messages sometimes two and three days later. Getting txt messages sometimes two and three days later. Phone not ringing and then next thing you know (voice mail indicator lights up). I can go on and on about how absolutely horrific their service is.

The people who like apple products are not leaping for joy over smooth scrolling they like the iPhone because of everything it does. The HD camera and 5 megapixel camera are going to be better than the one we got with the evo.

People like the iPhone like it because their are smooth apps, that always work. They have a full version of nazi zombies and plenty of other games and apps for the device. Yes, for people who are so happy and giddy about customizing their phone android is taking over, but for the average consumer, the iPhone is still going to be the most popular phone.

the iPhone has a full iMovie video editing software built in.

I hate to say it but when the apple makes something they make it fully integrated, and pack everything they can with the features they give you.

everyone hates itunes for some reason, but apple gives you a full library for all your songs and movies that you can buy for your device.

The HD camera, they give you a $5 (which is reasonalbe) app that lets you turn your phone into a movie editor.

With the EVO, their are no places to download movies without having to go through a bunch or conversion and stuff.

The EVO is an amazing device, but it pisses me off all the people on here who are hypocrits and are calling all iPhone people fanboys, when they are hanging from android nuts.

I found typing to be pretty fast on the EVO, but I know from using other Android phones with slower processors that turning off the haptic feedback can make a big difference in tying speed (Settings --> Language & Keyboard --> Touch Input Settings-->Text Input --> Vibrate when typing)

This. When I did this on my Hero, it made everything instantaneous while typing.

As to the original question, basically if you have an iPhone, you probably use America Online because the big bad internet is so scary. iPhone is 1984 in denim and a black shirt, EVO is Harrison Bergeron sans restraints.

I'll take you up on this, because if you are right, I am mistaken. You're saying a jailbroken device is superior. List these things that iPhone does, jb'ed, that make it superior to all other devices.

Not challenging you necessarily; I've always thought otherwise.

I do believe you simplistically describe the jailbreaking process. For one, you are dealing with a manufacturer who works VERY hard to thwart jailbreaking.
