go check your local at&t store

Wal Mart online has updated their no contract pricing to $499 Samsung Captivate (AT&T) | LetsTalk.com but the upgrade price says free??? and the Wal Mart I checked at yesterday told me that they won't even have them for a couple weeks in store. Oh well I am done searching, got mine at the local AT&T store when they opened this morning.

Purchased mine from my local ATT store today. Lady let me play with the showcase model since they did not have it out yet and then I proceeded to purchase it, with a protective case, for around $250. Phone so far is amazing!

I am just going to clap my hands over my ears and yodel "la la la" every time I hear about the Wal-Mart deal.

I got it. When I arrived at the store this morning there were three other people waiting with the express purpose of buying this phone when the store opened. And at least two more walked in while I was checking out. They had 15 in stock and were expecting to run out this week. It's a popular phone.

Was anyone able to walk into AT&T today and get the $350 no contract price? Just curious.

I did, I went in expecting to pay the $500, it was $350 when he rung it up.

The rep knew it was supposed to be $500, when he told me the price I just started grinning like an idiot.

It's probably hit or miss. I got lucky.

Best Buy came thru for me. Got one of the five that the store got for launch day. Guess I got a little lucky, but at least I'm posting this from my new phone :)

Tried to use my AMEX at the AT&T store today. Also had used it to try to get the phone from Wal-Mart online. Freaking fraud prevention kicked in on my card so they declined it and immediately called me. Even though I approved it and AMEX authorized, AT&T's register system doesn't accept manual authorizations and wouldn't let the order re-authorize for 24 hours. That was only SLIGHTLY embarrassing. AT&T said they couldn't do anything, so I had Best Buy price match AT&T's pricing. Probably should have just went there to begin with. This was for no-contract pricing on a credit card with 0 balance :p

No luck for me. After reading " I went in expecting to pay the $500, it was $350 when he rung it up", I hopped right off my computer, into the car, and drove to the AT&T kiosk in the mall down the street. The woman working there was very nice and knew about the whole pricing issue as well. I asked her to ring it up (only one phone had been given to the kiosk) and see what it comes out to. Sure enough, $500. We ended up talking about android for a bit, then she asked if she could see my current phone. She put her phone number in it.

For people close to Atlanta, I got mine from the store on Cobb Pkwy today. They sold 3 others while I was there- the manager said they had 'loads' of them. Just a heads up if you can't find a store thats selling them. Also- ask about 'early upgrade' Walked out of ATT only spending 274.99

I finally got fed up, after 13 years, with all this BS and opened a 4-line family plan at Sprint, for 4 EVO's - should have them tomorrow morning, or Tuesday. A coup like taking 4 lines from AT&T, and 4 EVO's, apparently bumps you WAY up the waiting list :)

Biggest kick in the pants, is Sprint, 4 x lines, 1500min, 4 x EVO's, 4 x unlimited data/text/web, any mobile any time = $217/mo after taxes, AT&T would be about $260 after tax. Right now I pay about $210/mo for 4 lines: 1 x iphone, 1 x android (both +$30 unlimited data) and 2 x std no-data lines, 1400min+rollover, A_List, unlimited family text plan = about $210/mo.

So long, AT&T/Cingular/Bellsouth Mobility - I gave you MANY chances...
And you took EVERY ONE of them to try and screw me!

Best thing, I guess, is I have 30 days at Sprint to decide if I want to go with Sprint, or for some reason need to stay with AT&T.

Any opinions on Sprint? Never used anyone but BellSouth/AT&T/Cingular/Back-To-AT&T here...

I was really disappointed at the 499 price. I called 3 times without any luck in getting an answer about the difference. I called back again and got a really nice guy. He had never heard of the phone. He said he would honor that price and give it to mer for 349.99. He went to order the phone and he said it wasn't in the system. He went and got his manager. He couldn't find a way around it so he said he would note it on my account and to call back tomorrow and they would order it for me at 350. I am really nervous the next person won't honor this. Guess we'll see.

If I'm being honest with you- it all depends on the area that you live in. Now, to be harsh, I left sprint after trying it for 2 days. The service here (ATL GA) was horrid like metro PCS put out a better service, the customer service made me feel like I was back on t-mobile. That being said- there are still two people I know that use sprint- I've asked multiple times why they choose to stay there and the only answer I get is " They prefer the nextel radios over other radios. " To each his own, is the way I look at it. I like ATT customer service, where many others hate it, but thus far I havn't had a bad chat with any att rep.

If I cant get that LetsTalk deal, my next option is to call AT&T Customer Service and complain about how 2 online sales reps told me $350, and that I took pictures of their conversations. Hopefully they can put something on my account telling a local store to honor that $350 price. If that doesn't work, I'm trying Best Buy.

Yes: Their coverage (at least around here) is horrible. Which negates and makes moot any possible price savings.

In fact, my theory is the reason their pricing is so much better is that they're trying to win people over on price, since they can't win them over on coverage...

I hate AT&T almost as much as I hate Verizon, but AT&T has slightly better coverage around here and I love the freedom GSM gives you.

Wife's pounding on me about losing her iPhone...

What to do...what to do...

Here's my situation: 4-lines, hers has a 3GS from 11/2009, mine is mo-to-mo, just walked in and asked for a SIM in April...
Kids are both eligible... strangely, wife's 8 mo old 2YR extension with her 3GS is eligible for reduced $199+$18 upgrade fee on the iPhone 4!

I can either get (3) iPhones and a captivate, or move on...

That's the one thing I would REALLY miss - currently, when I travel, as I did to Europe and on a cruise ship 6/6 - 7/7, I pop my work AT&T SIM from my work bb Curve, and toss it in my backflip, which would work the same with the captivate. When I travel, we get bumped to unlimited international data (some major national acct - unlimited inat'l data isn't even AVAILABLE for personal/premier accounts, and I've ASKED!)

SO ya - that convenience, just buying a phone and popping you SIM card in, goes out the window...

Still hashing it out...told the Sprint guy to hold off, though I have an acct ready to go if I decide to pull the trigger on the 4 EVO's.

But, then my AT&T bill flies up to like $265/mo, so I was thinking of dumping the $80/mo AT&T landline at home, and just go on the NetTalk/TK6000 VoIP device/service I already have. Free service for life, as I bought it in December 2009. Not like we use it THAT much, anyway, and with 4 cell phones, with A-List...

Since you have such high revenue, and an existing iPhone, you are eligible for an exception upgrade, which is why your wife is already eligible again. :)

Ahhh... mebbe you can assist sorting out MY line...

Bought a BackFlop as an added line around 3/27 $199.99, exchanged faulty unit 4/13, finally got fed up and RETURNED on 4/19 (still have receipt, restock fee and all), but KEPT the SIM and line, because I liked the number. Was given a backflip for cheap - my reasoning, is I'm not getting on a 2YR contract for a backflip, and will save the subsidy for down the road (Captivate)...but got one for cheap used from a friend, so I kept the SIM and #, as I like the #...

Something happened, and they show me as not eligible, even though I returned it, and they actually show my line as not having returned the phone, even though I'm not under contract, due to returning it

Yeah...see...THIS is the kinda' junk I gotta deal with... been to the corporate store like 4 times, and called at LEAST as many times, to no avail...

Corp store (where all transactions took place) keeps telling me to get to corporate, corporate keeps sending me back to the corp store...

3 months later....

And it's plainly obvious I'm not under contract, because they even gave me the unlock code for this backflip!

Yeah - that's what *I* said!

Earlier tonight, a supervisor I was on the phone with was talking about the contract on my line in 2009, and I was like, are you SERIOUS? This LINE is not even 4 months old. Then she dug a little further, and got even MORE confused, and basically sent me BACK to the Corp store, talking about them having to reinstate the upgrade eligibility.

Seriously - I coudn't even MAKE this sh#t up!!!!

Well, if you returned the equipment, they would have either had to do 2 things. Cancel the line which negates the contract, or change the contract to NO CONTRACT since you basically added a line with your own equipment(since you returned it, it's the same thing).

It sounds like when you returned the equipment and kept the line, the rep didn't change the contract date. Most reps don't have access to change that in the system they use(OPUS).

If you speak with a manager, most have Telegence access, and can go inside that and change dates, making you eligible again.

It was one of the managers who processed the return!

The 800-line supervisor said she couldn't do anything, because it was so far out from the return date, that it wasn't letting her change anything.

It's been REALLY REALLY frustrating. I've called in at least 3-4 times, and been to the store 3-4 times, although THIS time I'm armed with a bit more info as to what the issue is.

Yeah, the problem really is with you keeping the number. For upgrades, we can reverse the upgrade like it never happened. On an activation, when customers return the equipment, the normal process is to cancel the line.

The rep was probably too lazy to get his manager to change the contract date. I'd suggest having a manager in store log into Telegence and fix it.

I figured it was going to cause issues when I "thunk" it up...

Anyways, enough of my thread-jacking, and thanks for the info!
Should be REALLY helpful tomorrow!

FYI, decided to stick it out - with my premier discount, data for lines 3/4 is $21.25+tax each - going to cancel the home landline ($80+/mo), and already ordered the (2) iPhone 4's as $217 upgrades for the kids, gotta order the wife's, then fix MY line and get the Captivate, then eBay her 16GB 3GS and my unlocked backflip.

LetsTalk told me the would not honor my weekend order for $229.99 and instead wanted to charge me $499.

They offered that price hike, or cancellation.

I canceled.

This is not a good feeling.

I'm thinking paying a premium $500 for 1yr old 1Ghz technology is not worth while.

This is not "1 year old 1Ghz technology", this is a new chip. The same/similar to what is in iPhone 4 (except clocked faster). 1Ghz on this chip is not the same as 1Ghz on others. Go look at the performance differences comparison videos. This is THE fastest Android phone on the market as far as graphics performance goes. This is faster than the 1Ghz Snapdragon that you find common in other devices.

Comparing computing devices by comparing GHz numbers is like comparing cars by comparing RPMs.

A CPU running at 800 MHz can easily outperform one that runs 1+ GHz. It all depends on how much the chip performs per cycle (Hz).

The Captivate uses the modern ARM Hummingbird CPU, which operates at 2000DMIPS and is twice as powerful as the iPhone 3Gs.
